As the number of fancy cupcake bakeries in the city grows ever larger, it gets harder and harder for new places to distinguish themselves. Innovative flavors, eye-catching designs and unique (or controversial, if you prefer) ingredients go a long way towards setting More Cupcakes apart from the crowd, and some of their offerings are a smashing success. Unfortunately, an often mediocre quality, unpleasant staff and high prices give us pause.

She led a long, full life. Yet, like every icon's passing, her death still came as a shock. Bea Arthur's passing has inspired remembrances from far and wide (and did you know her final act was penning a letter protesting foie gras?)
Before last week it had been a while since we caught up with local underground chef Efrain Cuevas, so we RSVP'd to his latest dinner, which was to be held on the rooftop of a grocery store on the north side. The location turned out to be fortuitous as Cuevas was able to buy most of the spices, herbs and vegetables for the dinner at the store.
From today's Tribune: Alderman Tom "Sticky Buns" Tunney, citing opposition from the restaurant industry (of which he's a member as owner of Ann Sather's) intends to force a vote on repealing the ridiculous-but-upheld-in-court foie gras ban. "We think we have the votes to (repeal) it," Tunney told the Trib.
Chicagoist has been known to wax philosophic when it comes to websites that make dining out and ordering in easier. We've written about two of our favorites, MenuPages and GrubHub, here and here, respectively. There's a new kid in town, and her name is FoodieBytes. We can already feel MenuPages and GrubHub shaking in their internet boots.
It is difficult to believe it has been a year since Chicago outlawed selling foie gras in the city. Judging from the number of times we've written about it, the last twelve months have been interesting ones for the much-maligned/celebrated product. Perhaps what is most interesting, according to Phil Vettel in today's Trib, is that a year later, it really isn't so difficult to find foie gras in the city.
A little over a year ago we collectively sighed with relief when Ald. Joe Moore of the 49th Ward persuaded city councilmen to decide, in a 48-to-1 vote, to ban the sale of foie gras, those delicious fatty livers of geese and ducks. We sighed not because we were happy, but because there was so much talk about it at the time, even we got tired of the whole debate. But the issue just wouldn't...
Hot Doug's is the proud recipient of the city's first Foie Gras ticket. Doug Sohn, who puts the Doug in Hot Doug's, has been taunting the hell out of city officials since the ban went into effect. Sohn framed the warning letter he received from the city and placed it on his counter. Coming half a year after the ordinance was passed, the Chicago Health Department inspector went to Hot Doug's on Friday morning, issued...
Chicagoist has written a ton about Chef Grant Achatz and Alinea. In fact, one of our first posts ever was an announcement that he'd be opening a new restaurant. Imagine our shock and surprise when in December Achatz contacted us and asked if we'd be interested in doing a feature on him for Chicagoist.
Last night, Chicagoist was one of the lucky few able to partake in the culinary experience that is Alinea and without getting into the whole disection of the evening and every detail of the restaurant (which we will), we want to first focus on the reason that we were there: the food. There are three menu choices: eight courses, twelve courses and the tour, a twenty-eight-course menu that reads almost as a dare to the diner. Chicagoist and our partners in epicurean debauchery are not shy about our love of food and so we went for the tour, with the wine pairing.
