Staff Picks - Our Summer "Bucket List" of Food

Staff Picks - Our Summer "Bucket List" of Food

As the weather today reminds us, summer is coming to an end. At the beginning of each summer, we make a list (in our case, a mental one, but we're willing to accept that some are more organized) of all the fabulous thing we want to do and eat before the summer ends. And then, suddenly, it's September and summer is just about over. If we try hard, there are a few more weeks of decent weather left for us to pack in the fun - and pack on the pounds. This is our checklist, our "bucket list" of summer food activities left to do. more ›

Southern Mac and Cheese Truck to Open a Store

Southern Mac and Cheese Truck to Open a Store

Our constant complaint about food trucks: They never come to us! Of course, we live and work in strange, far-flung neighborhoods, so this isn't really a complaint that they should feel obliged to do anything about. However! The Southern Mac and Cheese truck is going to make it a little easier to predictably get that gooey goodness - they're opening up a storefront. Yes. It's mindblowing - from restaurant to truck based on a restaurant to restaurant based on a truck based on a restaurant. Whew. more ›

Join City Provisions on the Meatyballs Mobile Truck Today!

For one day only (until they decide to do it again) Chef Cleetus Friedman of City Provisions will be riding along with Philip Foss on the Meatyballs Mobile! That sounds like a synopsis for a bad road trip movie, but it should be a great collaboration. Friedman, who is one of our favorite meat cooks in town, has created something really special for today's ride: a meatball that's a combination of lamb and pork served with a coconut milk masala and fresh mint tzatziki sauce. more ›

Food Truck Freak Helps You Find Trucks Without Twitter Fuss

This morning, a new food truck locator for Chicago launched its way onto the web. But it's neither a new mobile app nor a simple Twitter aggregator. Even better, it helps you plan for the future, rather than waking up in the morning and realizing that a cupcake truck happens to be parked outside of your office. more ›

Evanston Hosts First Food Truck Festival

On the heels of Chicago's Food Truck Tuesdays comes Evanston's first Food Truck Meetup, on Sunday, June 26th. If you don't live near a food truck route (or can't be bothered to track them on twitter) it often feels like you are totally left out of this growing trend. Especially if you live in the suburbs, food trucks aren't coming your way very often. If you're a north-sider or an Evanstonian and want a taste of the Hummingbird Kitchen, Flirty Cupcakes or 5411 Empanada trucks, this is the moment for you. more ›

[UPDATED] Should Alderman Tunney Recuse Himself From a Food Truck Vote?

According to the recent food truck story from the Sun-Times, 44th ward Alderman Tom Tunney has some specific concerns over the possibility of food trucks coming too close to established brick-and-mortar restaurants. Rightfully so - City Hall reporter Fran Spielman called him the "restaurant-owning Alderman," which is confirmed by financial disclosure forms Tunney filed with the City Clerk. Is that enough to establish a conflict of interest, as defined by the city's Board of Ethics? Or is the money he's been paid by the city for catering enough to do it? more ›

Food Trucks are Going to the Dogs

Food Trucks are Going to the Dogs

Lick Lick, a new food "truck" (more of a cart) for dogs, has hit the streets. We can't tell if this is the moment that food trucks jump the shark or if dog owners everywhere will converge on the new venture. Now, while you're waiting for your mac and cheese or your designer cupcake, you can buy food for your pampered pooch. Lick Lick offers "preservative free gourmet dog treats" and "artisanal ice cream." more ›

Mayor Daley's Food Legacy

On Friday, we took on Da Mare's impact on the city's music and arts - today, it's time to turn to restaurants. How has the mayor's tenure affected the city's food scene? Join the "Food Truck Summit" On April 19th

We hear about a lot of "summit meetings" in the news - they usually involve world leaders, lots of bowing and attempts to avoid armageddon. Luckily, next week, Chicago will host a much more productive and entertaining summit - a Food Truck Summit. To celebrate her new book, "Food Trucks: Dispatches and Recipes from the Best Kitchens on Wheels," Heather Shouse (Senior Food and Drink Correspondant for Time Out Chicago) is hosting a meeting of the food trucks of Chicago. Do you live in a far-flung neighborhood? Or do you just find it exhausting to track food trucks on twitter? Now is your chance to try all of them in one place. more ›

Track that Truck! There’s an App for That

Tracking down food trucks can be cumbersome; you have to know what trucks are out there and follow all of their twitter accounts. If you miss the truck you want, you have to start the whole search process over again. Well guess what, Chicago, you no longer need to do the Twitter/Facebook hunt—there’s an app for that. TruxMap, founded in L.A., offers a free, centralized way to “track all food trucks in the city in real-time, using our Web interface, Twitter feeds and iPhone GPS coordinates,” says co-creator and lead developer Ivan Pardo. Still in its initial phases, the app is in the process of collecting data to provide accurate updates on location stops and times. more ›

What Could Rahmageddon Mean for Chicago Food?

What Could Rahmageddon Mean for Chicago Food?

Chicago's local food community was buzzing with excitement in early February when then-candidate Rahm Emanuel announced the food policies for his potential administration. Now that he has taken the mayor's office, it's time to revisit those policy statements and see what is in store for Chicago's urban food scene under the new Emanuel administration. If he is able to enact his plans, we could see a dramatic transformation; a city where food trucks are legal, produce is sold directly to consumers, urban agriculture is promoted, and food deserts are eliminated. more ›

Track that Truck - The Southern’s Mac & Cheese Hits the Streets

“Hi there! Come on over! I swear it’s good... it’s like crack, it’ll keep you coming back!” says truck owner Jim Lasky as he ushers over pedestrians to the mobile kitchen embossed with their logo of a skillet atop oozing cheese. His calls are almost unnecessary on day of Chicagoist's visit, as the crowd forms quickly and most of the dishes are gone within half an hour. Launched last week, The Southern Mac & Cheese food truck caters to the lunch crowds that are fans of their southern-style hearty mac and cheese. more ›
