We've been proponents of Free Energy since their good time rock and/or roll first hit our ears, and they even made our list of the best albums of 2010. The group has been touring non-stop for most of the last year and they're making their umpteenth stop in Chicago tomorrow night at Double Door. Unlike previous stops, though, this looks to be their last appearance here for a while since we hear they're finally taking a well deserved break from the constant grind of the road.
Catch Free Energy Before They Power Down (For A While)
Spandexxx Brings Some Free Energy To Town
The Spandexxx party, curated by the Moneypenny DJ team, has resumed in a familiar space with a new name, Beauty Bar. While they soft launched with a party there last month, we consider tomorrow's bash to mark the night's true return to form. Why? For starters they've brought Team Bayside High -- that duo of DJs currently ruling the Chicago scene sprinkling fun around them wherever they go -- onto the bill. Secondly, and even more importantly, they're bringing in musical guest Free Energy.

Free Energy's debut Stuck On Nothing -- out today -- is already one of our favorite party records of 2010. Their appearance at The Empty Bottle last Friday took tunes that on album are already pretty perfect and upped the energy and grit by blowing said songs through a dual-guitar attack and a stage show that never slowed down. Throw in choice selections from the band's small catalog, a smokin' cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Hey You," a dance section singer Paul Sprangers dubbed "the dude pit," and you had the making's of a pretty unforgettable show. It appears as if the bro nation is already onto these boys from Philadelphia, so we're glad we got a chance to see them at The Bottle since their next time through town is sure to be in a much larger room.
Rockin' Our Turntable: Free Energy
Free Energy take their cue from the sugar glam of the '70s and throw a little post-rock NYC circa '78 on the glitter spike all day suckers they toss out to your ears. The opening salvo on their debut Stuck On Nothing, conveniently titled "Free Energy," acts as a call to arms, mapping out the bands intent, driven by an opening cowbell ushering guitar chords meant to get heads nodding. By the time the chorus hits you're ready to grab the person next to you and start jumping around the dance floor as if it was a sunlit mattress in a teenage room surrounded by pop idol posters.
