The Friday Buffet

So we didn't get the Olympics? Relax! People still gotta eat and, regardless of the outcome, supporters and opponents of the bid would have had a reason to drink tonight. Here are some events coming up in the next week of note.

Do This: Marine Week

If you've noticed an abundance of men and women in uniform around town, it's because it is the first ever Marine Week here in Chicago. It kicked off Monday morning and continues through Sunday night. The Marines will be showcasing their talents around town all week. You can see the full list of events here, but here is a list of events that are free and open to the public.

Every kid wants to run away and join the circus. The elephants! The striped tents! The cotton candy! We wanted to be the strong man or the graceful trapeze artist or for some of us, the bearded lady. Most of all, we wanted to experience that magic was real and unbelievable things could happen everyday.

And speaking of cool widgets, Chicagoist reader Liz B. emailled us with this cool widget that lists free events in Chicago. We're not sure why VW is offering it, but it's great. The widget is available as a Mac Dashboard Widget or as a Yahoo! Widget, so whatever your platform, you can get it. Liz says, "If I'd have known about it earlier (and if it were warmer outside) I might have attended the free Bhangra dance workshop at Millenium Park."

While we like to think of ourselves as culturally aware, we have to admit that we are pretty unaware when it comes to Kwanzaa. Aside from seeing a small exhibit about the holiday at the DuSable Museum of African-American History, and hearing a woman at the post office wishing a clerk a “Happy Kwanzaa!” (the first we’d ever heard it said, mind you), our encounters with the celebration have been few and far between.

Earlier this week, Chicagoist went to an advanced screening of The Puffy Chair at Copa Lounge in Lincoln Park because (A) we like going to free events, (B) we like drinking beer while we watch movies, and (C) we thought a movie centered around a ginormously hideous purple velvet chair had to be entertaining.

Now in its fifth year, Columbia College’s Manifest Urban Arts Festival has grown larger than most of us could ever have imagined. Then again, it's run by arts students. Their imaginations are larger than most. We’re sure someone’s done a study to prove it. Manifest is an arts festival good enough to rival any summer street fair and a graduation party large enough to make students from more conventional schools jealous. We’ve already told you...

Seven days into the month is the perfect time to mention that October is Chicago Artists’ Month. Much like the Bike Chicago festival, CAM is one part examination of a local subculture and one part showcase for events that would’ve happened anyway. The Department of Cultural Affairs arranges this series of free events and “A-game” exhibitions as a reminder that no matter which corner of the city you live in, you’re never too far from...

Chicagoist loves "free" so we were happy to hear about these three upcoming free events.
