Rainbo could be the center of a time warp to 1996 Wicker Park tonight as Azita previews new songs at a free show there tonight.
Azita Plays Free Show at Rainbo Tonight
JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound Rock Your Monday
Local soul/funk rockers J.C. Brooks and The Uptown Sound have always been able to get us perked up and in a dancing mood. Which makes tonight's performance at the Empty Bottle a perfectly-timed event. With warmer weather (slowly) rolling in and another work week upon us, we're ready to relieve some stress and just have a good time. And it's impossible to have anything but a good time at a show from one of the city's most energetic, soulful bands. The group is currently promoting its fantastic new single "Get It Together" which comes backed with a funked-up cover of Wilco's "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart." The icing on the cake for tonight's show? It's free of charge. So get a running start to your week; you may wake up a bit tired tomorrow, but trust us, it'll all be worth it.
3rd Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival (FREE!)
Wedged in among lawn chairs, trying to tune out nearby conversations so you can concentrate on an amplified band you can't even see is no way to experience a jazz concert. There are lots of good things about the Chicago Jazz Festival -- and it did still manage to pull off a good weekend this year in spite of budget cuts -- but it's better suited for a set-up like the almost-over World Music Festival, with many events spread across the city, rather than the outdoor festival model.
The Soul Collective Cruises Through Chicago
Tapping artists, musicians, and cultural curators, Kia veers through Chicago this weekend for The Soul Collective.
It Was Written
Dancehall isn't a scene that is particularly big here in Chicago, at least not when compared to a city like NYC. It's a shame, because there's a lot we're missing out on. It looks like tonight is our lucky night. Red Stripe and The Fader have come together to present It Was Written, a celebration of Jamaican music to be held as an RSVP only event at Q4. Kingston dancehall queen Terry Lynn performs live with Johan Hugo (aka Radioclit) with an additional DJ set from Wildlife. Free entry and free booze is more than enough incentive for you to get out and get to know dancehall.
