For most of us, the act of paying for things that we wish to acquire is as natural as putting the bread on the outside of our sandwich. But the Free Store Chicago -- a temporary, neighborhood-roaming event that takes place here every few months -- challenges our capitalistic norms by doing away with all of the underpaid cashiers in unsightly smocks and prowling rent-a-cops. At the Free Store, you can bring whatever you want to give away to other people (even nothing! though that's lame), and take home the items they no longer want -- and you won't have to pay a penny, or face shoplifting charges. There are no rules and requirements about what or how much to bring to the Free Store, so don't get donation-related performance anxiety. After dark, movies will be projected in the yard.
