Mayor Daley's Recycling Program So Successful, Participation is its Own Reward

Yes, it's true: Chicago's blue bag recycling program has been a resounding success. So much so, that we're now the greenest city in the world. And if that wasn't satisfaction enough to get the good people of the City that Works to step up to the plate and sort all those empty long necks out of their coffee grounds and chicken bones, the city is starting a pilot program that awards points to households that recycle on a regular basis.

Visit the Shedd Aquarium for Free!

The Shedd Aquarium, as part of their Community Discount Days, is offering free admission for the rest of this week! From February 16th through the 20th, visitors get in to the main exhibit galleries free . Entrance to the Wild Reef exhibit (which is excellent, by the way) is available at a discounted rate. We're guessing that the Shedd might be trying to drive up their attendance, since the Oceanarium is closed until June of this year. In combination with the Art Institute letting visitors in for free every day in February, it’s a very good month for museum-goers on a budget.

Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealerships are giving away free tickets to the Chicago Auto Show. All you have to do is fill out their online form, print the confirmation page, and visit a local dealership.

Chicagoist loves getting free stuff. Whether it's Free Cone Day, burritos, or bags of useless trinkets, we revel in all things gained sans payment. But, when a goodie bag containing condoms, a racy catalogue from Lover's Lane, an explicit CD, coupons for sexual favors and suntan lotion packets with marijuana leaves on them is given to a 12-year-old girl, the buck stops there. As was the case last weekend when Pam Richard took her three...

It's our 3rd Anniversary Party at Subterranean tonight! We are very, VERY excited to finally be past our twos! We are even more excited that this event is open to a broad swathe of our readers since it's open to everyone 18 and over. (And for those of you over 21, we're sure you're excited about the $2.50 pints of Goose Island available all night long.) We've spent the past few days talking to and...

We admit it. We like free stuff. Even if we don't like the radio station handing out free stickers after a show, we'll still take them. Likewise, we'll try any free sample at the grocery store, especially if it's liquor. It doesn't matter if it's good liquor or not — if it's free, we're trying it.

We’re less than a month away from Ctrl – Alt –Rock, version 2.0 (February 8 at Double Door) and we’re now convinced that we’ve assembled a lineup so powerful that all other rock bands have fled for the hills.

Chicagoist is positively overflowing with free stuff lately. And next on our list of giveaways is two tickets to the Hotel Cafe Tour.

Chicagoist loves animals. More specifically, we love our dogs (some of which can be seen here), so we were pumped today when we came across 2 dog events and one dog study all in the same day!

The details are falling into place for Chicagoist’s first live rock show, Ctrl – Alt – Rock. For those of you who will still be nursing broken hearts after Valentine’s Day, Chicagoist invites you to Schubas on February 16th for an evening with three of Chicago’s best local bands: The Assembly, May Or May Not, and Alphabet. They will warm both the cockles and sub-cockular regions of your cold, black heart. Just in case you...

Love your iPod but too lazy to import all your CDs into iTunes? Then this is the contest for you.

When Chicagoist gets free stuff sent to its offices, our first thought is always “Can I sell this on Ebay for beer money?” If the answer is no then our next thought is “Can we give this away to readers without violating federal postal regulations?” If the answer is yes, we give it away on the site.

We couldn't be more jazzed up for this weekend, with some of our favorite folks hosting events. Let's get this party started, fools.

Sometimes people give away awesome stuff on craigslist. Sometimes they give away toilets. But not the white one! The white one is $10.
