Is it still a royal ball if someone brings a beer-helmet? Funk / jazz all-stars Soulive and Lettuce held court at the Vic Theatre Saturday night.
Soulive And Lettuce Have A Ball At The Vic
"One for the Road:" Baby Huey and the Babysitters
Born August 17, 1944 in Richmond Indiana, James Ramey had a glandular condition that kept his weight fluctuating between 350-400 pounds. Matched with the fashion of the 1960s, a giant afro and a booming voice, Ramey was better known on Chicago stages as "Baby Huey." Ramey's sole album on Curtis Mayfield's Curtdom label combined the hard street soul of Mayfield with the psychedelic leanings of Sly & the Family Stone.
Rhymefest Calls on His Own Clinton for Campaign Fundraiser
Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist and candidate for 20th Ward Alderman Che "Rhymefest" Smith is calling on some legends to help him raise the campaign cash he feels is necessary to unseat incumbent Willie Cochran. Case in point: a fundraising concert tomorrow night with the Atomic Dog himself, George Clinton.
JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound Rock Your Monday
Local soul/funk rockers J.C. Brooks and The Uptown Sound have always been able to get us perked up and in a dancing mood. Which makes tonight's performance at the Empty Bottle a perfectly-timed event. With warmer weather (slowly) rolling in and another work week upon us, we're ready to relieve some stress and just have a good time. And it's impossible to have anything but a good time at a show from one of the city's most energetic, soulful bands. The group is currently promoting its fantastic new single "Get It Together" which comes backed with a funked-up cover of Wilco's "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart." The icing on the cake for tonight's show? It's free of charge. So get a running start to your week; you may wake up a bit tired tomorrow, but trust us, it'll all be worth it.
Thursday Lunchtime Diversion: Muppets + Funk = Heaven
This is the most glorious video we've seen all week and it definitely puts us in the mood for the upcoming holiday weekend. It's also further evidence that Jim Henson was either even more of a genius than we ever thought or that he was totally tripping out of his mind during the 70s. Some of those Muppets are WEIRD, man.
