If you missed the global sports extravaganza that was the Gay Games this summer (see, we've already *had* an Olympics, people!), you can still get in on a part of the action. To wrap things up and to clean out the closet, the organizers are having a mega garage sale. What might you find at this garage sale, you ask? "Items available for sale will include country and state banners used in the Opening and...
Michael Marcavage, a Christian activist and Repent America* president, was accused of disrupting the Gay Games earlier this year. He says he was arrested while lawfully expressing his pro-traditional marriage views at a gay event. The City of Chicago is pushing forward in prosecuting him.
Remember in the Star Trek movies how Kirk got demoted from Admiral after he went off looking for Spock’s body? But Starfleet still wanted him to be the captain of the Enterprise? Well, the world music mainstay HotHouse is going through something just like that with its former executive director Marguerite Horberg.

Unless you are one of those people who live in the deep, dank sewers, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been at or near 100 degrees for the past few days. Well, that’s because the sun is moving ever closer to the earth, and we’re all going to die.
Chicagoist is glad our stolen bike was returned last week, because we'd have been pissed off if we had to miss the L.A.T.E. Ride. Once again, we'll be pedaling through the night, along with almost 10,000 other riders. The 22-mile course winds through the city, beginning in Grant Park at about 1:30am and finishing with a sunrise breakfast at Buckingham Fountain.
This weekend is supposed to be HOT HOT HOT so when you head out for your weekend activities, don't forget to hydrate! And not only with vodka drinks and beer, unless you want to be super drunk in 2.6 seconds! Of course, being that wasted might make your photos more interesting and this is where we remind you to tag your weekend photos with "Chicagoist" in Flickr for a chance to win our Festival/Parade/Weekend Chicago...
City officials have been known to capture the excitement of a cultural festival by declaring “Today we are all Irish!” to a crowd in Beverly or “Today we are all Polish!” to Jefferson Parkers. It’s amusing to think we’ll hear a Commissioner proclaim “Today we are all gay!” when the Gay Games open Saturday night, but Mayor Daley expressed his more than symbolic support earlier this week, thanking the out and proud (and commerce seeking)...
It’s taken a lot (seriously, a lot) to get here, but the Gay Games have finally arrived. The week-long event kicks off Saturday with opening ceremonies at Soldier Field. Events will be held at 33 venues throughout the city and the suburbs. Tickets for the opening ceremonies and closing ceremonies at Wrigley Field are still available. Premium ticket packages can be purchased at a discounted rate on the Gay Games Web site until 10 a.m....
No, Chicagoist isn't promoting the return of short pants for the White Sox. What happened in the 70's should stay in the 70's. But with so much going on around the World Champs yesterday, we figured we'd give a quick run-down of a few items. Sure it Wasn't the Bears and Rams? The White Sox had a night to remember at the plate last night, clobbering the St. Louis Cardinals 20-6 at the Cell. The...
There’s been a lot of ink spilled about Chicago’s cornucopia of music events this summer, but yesterday’s RedEye also clued us in to several film festivals that are happening in the next three months, including ones we’ve covered like the Silent Film Festival and the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival as well as upcoming events we haven’t like Reeling’s Gay Games fest, the Onion City Experimental Film Festival and the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Here are...
Cyndi Lauper has been slated to perform at the Gay Games VII Closing Ceremony at Wrigley Field. Tickets are now on sale for the July 22nd event. Cyndi has been active with PFLAG and the Matthew Shepard Foundation and previously performed at the Gay Games in 1994 when they were held in New York City. Lauper's latest CD, The Body Acoustic, celebrates diversity, friends, and acceptance which are consistent with the image that we feel...
The Bean is finally finished, and it’s getting the royal treatment today at a dedication ceremony. The sculpture has already become a Chicago icon and will be featured on the uniforms of Team Chicago at this summer’s Gay Games VII.
Several subjects of past Chicagoist posts are back in the news this week: Remember that guy who drunkenly stumbled onto a runway at Midway last month? He pleaded guilty to criminal trespassing and was sentenced to 18 months of court supervision and 10 days in the Cook County sheriff’s work program. Oh, and he isn’t welcome at Midway anymore. And then there’s Megabus, that new dollar bus line. We hope none of your were on...
As more than 8,000 athletes prepare to head to Chicago to participate in this summer’s Gay Games 2006, a new book touts Chicago as a “thriving gay capital.” "The Field Guide to Gay and Lesbian Chicago" (Lake Claremont Press) by Kathie Bergquist and Robert McDonald, says the city is often overlooked by gay-friendly travel guides, and those that mention it usually focus on the bar scene. McDonald argues that authors of other guides have only...
Everyone's gonna be screwed when construction on the Dan Ryan starts next month. We all know that. But now the CTA is doing their part to help out ... or maybe just trying to figure out a way for them to make some money off it. In an effort to encourage those who would normally take the Dan Ryan to take trains and buses, CTA President Frank Kruesi recommended that the CTA waive the fee for its Chicago Card through May. So waive the fee initially, make a shitload in the end. Of course, it would give all of us the opportunity to get the card for free for a couple months.
This summers Gay Games 2006 in Chicago got some good news this week in the form of an approved federal blanket waiver allowing non-U.S. citizens with HIV/AIDS to travel the United States and participate in or attend the event. Gay Games VII Sports & Cultural Festival will be held at various city venues from July 15 to 22. The waiver gives the games Designated Event Status and allows HIV-positive participants and attendees to apply for...
Note: This is Part 2 of an occasional series. Part 1 can be found here. Theater companies have been working overtime lately, killing a forest to print their brochures and flooding inboxes with exciting emails—You Just Can’t Miss This Season!, We’ve Got Stuff You Can’t See Anywhere Else!, and Its’ Our Anniversary! Are You Going To Stand Me Up On Our Anniversary?!?! It’s a lot of clutter and noise, but it’s far more interesting than...
Chicagoist has previously covered the Illinois Family Institute's attempts at coercing sponsors of the Gay Games VII -- which will be held in Chicago July 15-22, 2006 -- to back out of the event. While companies like Kraft and Harris Bank have yet to withdraw their support for the games, the same cannot be said for some local pols.
As Pride Weekend gears up, gay news is spewing forth from Chicago faster than Jerry Falwell can yell "boycott!" A few gay briefs: · A recent poll commissioned by Equality Illinois found that while a majority of your neighbors would reject a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, most don't favor marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. Even though no amendment is likely to be introduced soon, 67% of those polled would vote no, only...
You didn't expect Chicago's involvement in the 2006 Gay Games to be drama free, did you?
Illinois wants it some gay money. Hoping to show the world that Chicago is gay friendly and to grab a slice of the $54 billion gays and lesbians spend on travel yearly, the Illinois Bureau of Tourism will step up efforts to target gay and lesbian travelers.
