LGBT Activists May Protest Jamaican Singer
A planned Oct. 9 performance by Jamaican reggae performer Capleton at The Kinetic Playground, 1113 W. Lawrence, has set the Gay Liberation Network (GLN) in motion against the singer's controversial, anti-gay lyrics. The LGBT organization is currently in negotiations with the Uptown venue to either cancel the gig or face community protest.
Anti-Gay "Truth Academy" Attracts Sparse Crowd
Yesterday, the SPLC-designated hate group Americans for Truth kicked off their three-day "Truth Academy" - designed to "‘de-brainwash’ young people of the many myths advanced by homosexual activists" - at the Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights, attracting a better attended counter-demonstration sponsored by the Gay Liberation Network.
Anti-Gay Suburban "Academy" Releases Curriculum
Remember that suburban Chicago-based Americans for Truth About Homosexuality setting about a youth-oriented "Truth Academy" to "train 'pro-family' advocates how to counter so-called 'homosexual misinformation?'" Well it appears plans are still moving forward for the Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group's event, to be held Aug. 5-7 at the Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights.
Honoring Harvey Milk, LGBT Activists Launch Week of Action
Answering the call from Cleve Jones and other organizers of last autumn's national LGBT march on Washington, Chicago activists have put together a busy week of actions slated to honor gay political leader Harvey Milk and continue the push for legal progress. The week culminates with a march on Saturday, which would have been Milk's 80th birthday.
Local LGBT Community Supports May Day Immigration Reform Rally
Arizona's controversial immigration law (SB 1070) has angered many around the nation in recent days, with everyone from Canadian dream-pop outfit Stars to San Francisco and Los Angeles city employees mulling boycotts of the state. Here in Chicago, activists, who demonstrated this week in Broadview, are preparing to rally against the law as part of the annual May Day event. The rally, set for Saturday at 1 p.m., will begin from Union Park, followed by a march downtown.
Tomorrow is Tax Day Tea Party Time
Tomorrow's Tax Day and with it comes Chicago's very own Tea Party. At noon at Daley Plaza, the Tea Party Patriots Chicago will launch their second-annual demonstration under the theme of "Repeal It. Replace Congress," while featuring "national known speakers, local liberty leaders and regular Americans" in addition to some live rock, blues and country music. Last year's Tax Day rally drew hundreds of demonstrators to the Loop, including the man pictured, in addition to many suburban protesters in Naperville.
Naperville Anti-Gay Org Labeled "Hate Group"
Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), a Naperville-based organization "devoted exclusively to exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda," has been officially labeled a "hate group" in the Southern Poverty Law Center's latest issue of its Intelligence Report publication.
Gays To Picket Holy Name Cathedral
In recognition of National Freedom to Marry Day, the Chicago-based LGBT advocacy organization Gay Liberation Network has planned an informational picket of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral for Sunday, Feb. 14. The picket is intended to "highlight the role the Church’s leadership has played in promoting inequality."
Rumors Come True: Fiorito Avoids Criminal Charges
Remember a few weeks back when the Cook County States Attorney's office denied a leaked rumor that Anita Alvarez would be letting the embattled, allegedly anti-gay, undeniably fishy Richard Fiorito off the hook? Turns out the rumor held some truth: As of Monday evening, Alvarez' office has ended its "nearly-year-long" investigation into the allegations facing Fiorito and, perhaps unsurprisingly, has decided not to press criminal charges, ABC7 reports.
Is An Anti-Gay Cop Being Let Off the Hook?
When we were alerted to a tip, earlier this week, from the Gay Liberation Network (GLN) that the Cook County States Attorney's office was planning to let the embattled Chicago police officer Richard Fiorito off the hook, we were a bit unnerved. The officer is currently the subject of 37 civil lawsuits alleging the police veteran repeatedly singled out gay, lesbian and other drivers for false DUI charges. In some cases, he is said to have used anti-gay slurs toward motorists. But the States Attorney's office claims the tip is untrue as the investigation continues.
Neo-Nazi Band's West Side Appearance Canceled
Bad news for any fans of the band Evil Incarnate reading the site: Their appearance at the West Side's White Star Night Club, scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled under threats of protest from area activists. The groups are not exactly feeling the band's virulently anti-gay, racist lyrics.
Chicagoans Protest Ugandan Anti-Gay Bill
Rachel Maddow is far from the only one speaking out against the Ugandan "Anti-Homosexuality Bill." Some 20 protesters braved the bitter cold and took yesterday, International Human Rights Day, as an opportunity to gather in opposition to the proposed bill outside of the Center on Halsted in Lakeview.
Allegedly Anti-Gay Cop Off the Streets, For Now
The city's LGBT community (in addition to, ya know, people who don't enjoy police misconduct) received good news Thursday when it was announced Officer Richard Fiorito has been placed on desk duty pending the resolution of 20-some federal lawsuits alleging his misconduct.
Chicago Activists Plan Picket of Obama's LGBT Address in Washington
And the funny thing is, the protesters are pro-gay. In reaction to news that President Obama will deliver the keynote address for LGBT org Human Right Campaign's fundraising gala Saturday, the Chicago-based Gay Liberation Network are planning to picket the event. They say "the time for talking is over" and want to see a little less conversation, a little more action on LGBT rights from the President.
