Afternoon Box Score: Jackson Dominates, Sox Beat Rays
Edwin Jackson struck out a career-high 13 batters over eight innings of work and Alex Rios hit an RBI double as the White Sox gave a sold-out U.S. Cellular Field a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in their home opener. Rios, one of the Sox who's gotten off to a slow start at the plate, came through in the bottom of the first with a ground rule double to plate Juan Pierre and Gordon Beckham. Paul Konerko added an RBI single in the third inning, and Brent Lillibridge and Pierre added RBI singles in the eighth. Sergio Santos pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the win and showed some leather by wrapping up a 3-6-1 double play. But it was Jackson who was the star of the game. The righthander has masterful control of all his pitches as he improved to 2-0 on the season with a 1.93 ERA.
Beckham Goes For A Change Of Tune
Mired in a deep slump (he currently spots a .187 batting average) White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham has taken drastic measures to try and right his swing. The second-year player changed up his at-bat music. He's made the walk to home plate to the Outfield's "Your Love" since his days at the University of Georgia, a song that's a curious selection compared to the usual heavy metal or hip-hop tracks most players choose. But in some ways, Gordon's pop selection started the trend of players picking lighter tunes.
Cubs, Sox Register A Few Blips For Post-Season Awards
Neither the Cubs or the Sox had particularly awful seasons, but they weren't great and both teams were left on the outside of the playoff race looking in. Fitting, then, that some of their better performing players made distant blips in some post-season award voting. The Cubs' first basemen, Derek Lee - who had a monster year with 35 HR, 111RBI, and a .306 avg - finished ninth in the voting for this year's NL MVP, the highest finish in either league's voting for a Chicago player. The Cardinals' Albert Pujols was the unanimous winner. Last week, Sox infielder Gordon Beckham finished fifth in AL Rookie of the Year voting and the Cubs' Randy Wells finished sixth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. As the saying goes, wait til next year...
Sox Shuffle Continues
The White Sox continue to shuffle their lineup around. First, a day after the rumors first leaked about a trade sending Chris Getz and Josh Fields (plus some cash) to Kansas City, the trade has been confirmed. Sox general manager Ken Williams tells the Trib the newly acquired Mark Teahen will play third while Gordon Beckham will be shifted over to second base.
Morning Box Score: Danks, Sox Shutdown Cleveland
The White Sox got a sterling pitching effort from John Danks who pitched a complete game as the Sox toppled the Indians 6-1 last night in Cleveland. Danks, pitching his first career complete game, struck out seven, allowed three hits, and gave up only one run via a Shin-Soo Choo solo homer in the seventh. Said Danks of his gem, "To go out there and get deep in the game, it feels good. I'm going to go out there and throw one more time against Detroit and hopefully it means something. Hopefully, the race isn't determined yet and it means something." Danks also benefited from some great run support. The Sox loaded the bases and brought in three runs in the second inning, including RBI singles from Brent Lillibridge and Gordon Beckham, who continues making his case for AL Rookie of the Year. Beckham added to that RBI total with a two-run double in the ninth, finishing the night with three RBIs. The division foes face off again tonight at 6:05 p.m. (CSN).
Getz Picked by Sox
When the White Sox opened camp last month, there were a number of positions that remained unfilled, with numerous players to compete for the starting jobs in center field, at second base and in the starting rotation.
