This is Officer Coates. When we first saw him at approximately 4 p.m. this afternoon, he was standing on a Segway (instant annoying!) and appeared to be telling some dudes with big signs announcing a 50% off sale on tuxedos (?) on Michigan Avenue that they couldn't stand there or something. This was right out front of 535 N. Michigan Ave. just south of the Intercontinental Hotel. We thought, "Who cares? Leave them alone!"...

We can’t turn our backs for a minute without those creatives making all sorts of trouble. Good for them. Let’s catch up and find more excuses to get out of the house this winter: Comedy/Theater Schadenfreude holds their December Rent Party tonight, where Chicagoist editor Scott Smith will read his correspondence with Richard Marx. Will the mulleted 80s rocker show up? No, but he’ll be played by a special guest. The monthly showcase of local...

When Chicagoist was a young'un our family took sort of a "free love" approach to religion. The closest we came to Catholicism was the Missouri Synod version of the Lutheran Church. As an adult we find ourselves living in a neighborhood - if not a city itself - that's heavily informed by Catholicism. While for some the sight of scores of ashy foreheads hark the start of the lenten season, we look for the arrival...

Fuck low-carb diets. Feed your dissent on Sunday at The Grand Feast, where 12 restaurants on Grand Ave. will be dishing up their specialties. Participating restaurants, including Thyme, Café Fresco, and Canella's, will be serving a "grand feast" wine dinners this weekend, too.

The CTA is planning to spiff up it's image with a few El station repairs, planning next spring to fix up the Grand Avenue station (registration required for Crain's) and then Clark and Division in 2006. CTA construction crews are pretty busy these days, with that work along the Dan Ryan Red Line Branch, the Blue Line Cermak Branch, and next year's plans to begin rehabbing just about every freaking station along the Brown Line (will this rehab include going back to the cool, old "Ravenswood" name?).

Two Chicago gang officers were pursuing a gunman in a high-speed chase when they accidentally hit two kids crossing Grand Avenue between North and Kostner avenues. Witnesses at the scene say that the children ran out from behind a minivan that was stacked with mattresses on top of it. Upon impact, both children were tossed into the air. The victims are an 8 year old boy and an 11 year old girl. The boy is in critical condition and on life support while the girl remained in serious condition this morning. The police officers driving the car, which did have it's lights and siren on, are now on paid administrative leave.
