This week Chicagoist received an email from the Chicago Department of Public Health, announcing the immediate closing of The Great American Bagel at 1248 W. Belmont. The list of serious violations included cockroach infestation and the serving of spoiled food. That's bad, obviously, but what's worse is that we have actually eaten food from this establishment! We felt kind of "eeeww" after our egg and cheese sandwich; now we realize how worse we could have felt.

This year's edition of the Great American Beer Festival is in the books, and Illinois breweries racked up an impressive 16 medals. Both Pabst (their corporate headquarters are in suburban Woodridge, so they qualified as an Illinois beer company) and Goose Island took home four medals each. Pabst earned respective gold and silver medals for Lone Star and Old Style (American-style cream ale or lager), and repeated the feat for Old Milwaukee Light and PBR...

Flossmoor Station and brewmaster Matt Van Wyk also were named Small Brewpub Company...
Strolling through our neighborhood the other day, we noticed this t-shirt in a window display. While we were a little put off by the lack of nuance and somewhat obnoxious tone of the shirt, turns out, Naperville may not be such an awful place after all.
This past week Chicagoist has been envying friends who work in air-conditioned comfort. Yes, summer’s finally here and that means: festivals! Anyone who’s been paying attention knows that Blues Fest will take over Grant Park through Sunday. But if you’re looking for something a bit more low key this weekend, check these out: The Merit School of Music comes to Pilsen’s Harrison Park this Sunday to present the Alegre StringTacular. All semester this South Loop...
We hope you'll pardon us if things at Chicagoist are a little lighter than usual this week. We're taking advantage of the Great American Work Slowdown otherwise known as the week between Christmas and New Year's. Since there's no one around to notice us leaving early or walking in late nursing a hangover, we've been trying to catch the odd show here and there.
Unlike those cheese-eating surrender monkeys, the French, Americans are rugged individualists. We like to do things on our own. And so in the Great American Spirit of rugged individualism, some folks in southern Cook County are trying to break off and form their own county, Lincoln County.
