Marinelli Interviews With Bears

After a 9-7 season and no trip to the playoffs, the Chicago Bears are certainly looking to improve. But can hiring the former head coach from the first NFL team to ever go 0-16 possibly help? Rod Marinelli, fired by Detroit after their debacle of a season, was seen at Halas Hall over the weekend where he apparently interviewed for a job with the Bears.

Too bad Brian Urlacher's monster game on Monday night came too late in the season for it to impact Pro Bowl voting by coaches and players. While he won the fans' vote, the Bears' middle linebacker was not selected to February's Pro Bowl for only the second time in his career — and the first in which he played the whole year.

Following Sunday's 19-16 win in Philadephia, Bears QB Brian Griese seemed to think that because there is an "I" in win, he would take the credit and claimed to have called the plays that resulted in the game winning 97-yard touchdown drive at the end of Sunday's game. He had no choice, he said, because the radio communication in his helmet stopped working just before the drive began. When the season's going as poorly it...

When we think of sexy athletes, typically blonde tennis players come to mind. So we're not sure what to make of the recent Sun-Times poll and its result, naming Bears punter Brad Maynard as the Hottest Bear. Girls, your thoughts? Maynard won in a landslide by garnering 57% of the vote! Well behind Maynard, "Adewale Ogunleye was second with 8 percent of the vote. Hunter Hillenmeyer and Brian Urlacher got about 7 percent each, and...

Chicagoist is starting to understand how Tank Johnson got his nickname. Could it be his fascination with weapons? While some people would learn from past experiences involving guns that could jeopardize one's freedom and multi-million dollar contract, others just don't seem to put two and two together. Tank Johnson apparently falls into the later category. The Chicago Bears' defensive tackle was charged yet again yesterday, this time with "six misdemeanor counts of unlawful possession of...

Early in the day, Bears coach Lovie Smith called rookie QB Kyle Orton into his office to inform him he was being named the starting QB. Orton has played very well throughout the preseason while former Grossman back-up Chad Hutchinson has not. Through their first 4 preseason games, Orton had a QB Rating of 92.3 while Hutchinson's was a horrific 23.1, including a 0.0 in Friday night's game against Buffalo. With Hutchinson bumped all the way down to 4th on the current depth chart behind Jeff Blake and Kurt Kittner, we may have seen the last of Hutchinson in a Bears uniform. Chicagoist sure is glad that Lovie is a bit more responsive to performance-based personnel changes than a certain baseball manager is. Lovie recognized that somebody wasn't doing the job and he wasted little time in handing over the reigns to somebody more capable.

Chicagoist realizes this town likes to reminisce about its past sports glory a little obsesivly (especially when there's been so little of late), but this is just a bit much. Members of the 1985 Chicago Bears team that won Super Bowl XX have established a corporation to market the 20th Anniversary of Super Bowl XX, with the blessing of the Bears organization.

Having given up on Jonathan Quinn and Jeff George, the Bears begin their auditions for a backup quarterback today with Kurt Warner's visit to Halas Hall. The former leage and Super Bowl MVP spent last season with the New York Giants, where he lost the starting job to rookie Eli Manning mid-season. Warner explained the other day, in Arizona: You always want to sign as a starter. I still believe I can be a starter...
