Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Earn Respect in OT Loss

It was a fun run while it lasted, but an Alexandre Burrows slap shot 5:22 into overtime gave the Vancouver Canucks a 2-1 overtime win over the Blackhawks in Game 7 of their first round Stanley Cup playoff series. It seemed fitting that this game should go to overtime and, in thee end, the better team won. But don't cry for the Blackhawks for long, people. They showed a lot of heart and determination in fighting back from a 3-0 deficit. In the process, the Blackhawks made some new stars and showed that there is some talent on the bench past the front line players. more ›

Un-freaking -believable. The Blackhawks, written for dead after three lackluster losses to the Vancouver Canucks in this Stanley Cup playoff series, could pull of that rarest of feats tomorrow night -- winning a series after digging a 3-0 hole -- with a win in Vancouver after last night's 4-3 overtime win over the Canucks at the United Center. more ›

Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Fight Back, Series Returns to Chicago

We prefer a more wide open brand of hockey, but we also have to admit that since the Blackhawks decided to start hitting the Vancouver Canucks back, the momentum in their Stanley Cup playoff series has shifted. The Canucks have reverted back to the team that Daily Herald columnist Barry Rozner described as "gutless." The Hawks routed Vancouver 5-0 last night, cutting their deficit in the series to 3-2 and forcing Game 6 at the United Center Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. more ›

Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Force Game 5

Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Force Game 5

We were all set to write the Blackhawks' postmortem. We still might have to come Friday. But for one night, the Blackhawks backed up the talk in their locker room that Vancouver could be beaten, that they weren't playing to the level they're capable of playing, that they could make a series of this. Bryan Bickell set the tone for last night's 7-2 thrashing of the Canucks, beating Roberto Luongo 1:43 into the game. The Blackhawks got the puck past Luongo throughout the second period with goals from Brian Campbell, Duncan Keith, Michael Frolik and the returning Dave Bolland, who missed the previous 17 games recovering from a concussion. Patrick Sharp added two third-period goals to cap the offensive assault. Most important for the Hawks, they finally hit the Canucks back. Vancouver responded by drawing a series of major penalties, losing their composure for the first time all series. more ›

Playoff Box Score: Canucks Fast Start Drops Hawks

Playoff Box Score: Canucks Fast Start Drops Hawks

Roberto Luongo showed what an elite goaltender can do when staked to a quick lead, shutting out the Blackhawks 2-0 in Game 1 of their Stanley Cup playoff series. Luongo made certain that first period goals from Christopher Higgins and Jannik Hansen, then shut down the Blackhawks with a 33-save performance. Corey Crawford was stellar in being able to hold the Sedin twins scoreless and played marvelous in goal all game, but the Canucks were the deeper team all game and played with a purpose after being kicked out of the previous two Stanley Cup playoffs by this same, but markedly different, Blackhawks team. Game 2 is tomorrow night. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks on Verge of Missing Playoffs

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks on Verge of Missing Playoffs

The cliche goes, "you have to want it bad enough." After last night's 2-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the United Center, Blackhawks fans must be asking that of their team. They made Lightning backup goalie Mike Smith look like Grant Fuhr or Dominik Hasek. Smith posted his first shutout of the season with a 31-save performance. The Blackhawks dictated the tempo for much of the game, but couldn't solve Smith. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Shred Panthers

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Shred Panthers

The Blackhawks held on to their tenuous grasp of reaching the playoffs last night with a 4-0 shutout of the Florida Panthers at the United Center. Corey Crawford earned his fourth shutout of the season with a 23-save performance as the Blackhawks stuck to a defensive-minded game plan against the Panthers. Brent Seabrook, Viktor Stalberg, Patrick Kane and Tomas Kopecky all scored to give Crawford a comfort zone to work with. The win allowed the Hawks to stay in contention for a Western Conference playoff spot. But with three points separating the teams in contention from those looking to leapfrog them, there is no margin for error. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Win Shootout Over Pittsburgh

Patrick Kane, recovered from his bout with the flu, got a forehand shot past Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury during a shootout round to lift the Blackhawks over the Penguins 3-2. Patrick Sharp scored off a Jonathan Toews pass in the first period for his team-leading 31st goal of the season. Bryan Bickell also scored for the Hawks, who earned two crucial points in their fight to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. But their chances don't bode well if they went to a shootout round against a Penguins squad that's missing stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Tame Wild

The Blackhawks have recently admitted that they an eye on the Western Conference standings. Currently in eleventh place in the standings and with only four points separating them from eighth-place Calgary for the final playoff spot, they need to focus on playing good hockey. Last night's 3-1 win over Minnesota was a good start. Morning Box Score: Bulls Rebound in Utah, Blackhawks Make Oilers Easy Pickings

last night's game against the Utah Jazz was a homecoming of sorts for current Bulls Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer, who all traded in the Jazz's colors for Chicago red during the offseason. Boozer wound up being outplayed by his replacement, Paul Millsap, but the Bulls corrected their defensive lapses of the previous two losses and avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season with a 91-86 victory. Derrick Rose scored 29 points and dished out 7 assists while being shadowed by the bigger Deron Williams on both ends of the court. Boozer added 14 points and 6 rebounds. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Rally in Columbus

Blackhawks 7, Blue Jackets 4: The Blackhawks returned from the All-Star break with a purpose in Columbus last night. But it took a Joel Quenneville timeout to do so. A Jonathan Toews short-handed goal shortly after that timeout started a four-goal deluge that erased a 3-2 deficit and provided Marty Turco with a cushion to seal the victory. The Blackhawks next travel to Vancouver for a Friday night battle with their arch-rival Canucks. more ›

Have You Seen This Puck?

After the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelpia Flyers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals last year, it appears that people were too busy partying to pay attention to where the game-winning hockey puck went. Some people thought that an upset Flyers fan grabbed the puck before anyone else could get their hands on it, but it's unclear how the puck left the ice without a trace on that fateful night. more ›

Wild 4, Blackhawks 2: Last year at the All-Star break the Blackhawks were cruising to a 100-point season with an eye on a Stanley Cup championship. This year, they're struggling to keep pace in a loaded Western Conference. Last night's 4-2 loss to Minnesota didn't help matters any. If the playoffs were to start today, the Hawks would be the bottom seed facing the conference-leading Vancouver Canucks. more ›
