Five Places To Skate Outside In Chicago That Aren't Millennium Park

Five Places To Skate Outside In Chicago That Aren't Millennium Park

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods and there are outdoor rinks that, while they don't offer the skyline view afforded at Millennium Park, are worth a trip to put cold steel on ice. Here are five of my favorites. Check them out soon: most of these close Feb. 26. more ›

Ice Skating Rink Opens At The Hancock On January 1

Ice Skating Rink Opens At The Hancock On January 1

It was only a matter of time before the John Hancock Observatory came up with a tourist attraction as attention-grabbing as The Willis Tower's glass cubes. Starting January 1, Hancock visitors will be able to ice skate 1,030 feet above the ground at "The World's Highest" ice rink, as the Hancock is referring to it. more ›

Warmth Delays Wrigley Rink Opening

Warmth Delays Wrigley Rink Opening

The ice rink that was to open today at a parking lot across from Wrigley Field won't be opening until this weekend. Why? It's hard to believe given last week's deep freeze but the past few days have been just too darn warm. With temps creeping near 40 degrees over the weekend and into yesterday, it seems, according to CBS 2, "the ice did not form correctly." Fortunately, we're all set for another solid cold snap over the next few days so officials are aiming to have the rink - $10 for adult, $6 for kids - open on Saturday. more ›

Ice Rink Coming Back To Wrigley

Insert your "ice cold like [Cub's player]" joke here and lace up the skates, kids, because there's another ice rink opening soon and it's opening at Wrigley Field. The rink, located in the parking lot across the street from Wrigley's west side (along Clark), will open next Tuesday and remain open until the end of February. Admission will be $10 for adults and $6 for kids. The $300,000 cost of the rink will be paid for by a $100,000 from the Chicago Park District, $100,000 from the company Westrec (which operates other rinks in the city), and $100,000 in private donations, including some from the Cubs' new owners, the Ricketts family. more ›

Sharpen Those Skates: Millennium Park's Rink Opens Friday

It's that time of year again...well, almost. It's just about time for the Millennium Park ice rink to open for the winter to fans of ice skating everywhere. It was due to open for business tomorrow but this week's forecast of rain has delayed the opening until noon this Friday (November 20). The rink will remain open until mid-March. It's free and open to the public but if you need to rent skates, that'll cost you $10. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays 12 p.m. -8 p.m.; Fridays 12 p.m. - 10 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.; and Sundays 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. more ›

Zombies On Ice

Zombies On Ice

This Sunday Chicago Zombie (who even knew such a site existed and how awesome is it that it does?!) and Kitty Zombie invite you to slap on your best torn clothes, rub some eye shadow around your eye sockets and lumber over to the McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink at Millennium Park. more ›

Millennium Park Ice Skating Rink Opening Delayed

Millennium Park Ice Skating Rink Opening Delayed

Ah, Mother Nature, you fickle beast! Even as we prepare for a return to chilly weather this weekend, the recent warm spell has claimed at least one casualty: the opening of the Millennium Park's McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. Due to the warm weather and a current forecast for rain, the rink's opening, originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, has been delayed; it's now tentatively scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, November 19 and will remain open through Sunday, March 15, 2009 (again, weather permitting). more ›

The Friday Flashback: Fun in the Cold

The Friday Flashback: Fun in the Cold

The weather forecast calls for a lot of "brass bra cold" this weekend. It won't stop people from going out and enjoying their weekend, although some serious consideration should be given to hibernating on the couch with movies, a bottle of wine, and a comforter. more ›

Hour 12 of Hmmm, What To Do Next

Hour 12 of Hmmm, What To Do Next

For a sizable chunk of the US population, Christmas is a time for... wondering when it's going to be the 26th. Jews have the stereotypical routine of Chinese food and a movie (Chicagoist has deemed Charlie Wilson's War the family-friendly-but-still-interesting-enough-not-to-bore-dad-who-likes-foreign-films movie of the season), but what to do for the rest of the day? more ›

December with Baby on Board

December with Baby on Board

The sidewalks are covered in ice and the temps are sneaking down to the single digits. That's perfect weather for toting a toddler around, right? Here are three (free!) reasons to spend that extra hour bundling your kid up this weekend. Christkindlmarket is a candy-cane striped Bavarian winter village deposited into Daley Plaza. Come to gawk at the expensive, often hand-made gifts, and snack on traditional German fare. The children's lantern parade is today at... more ›

What We're Thankful For, Part 2

What We're Thankful For, Part 2

Here's hoping everyone's having a happy Thanksgiving. And here's some more things we're giving thanks for today: I am thankful for Chicago sports fans, that they sell out the United Center even when the Bulls suck, that they were still wearing Grossman's jersey when Griese was starting. -- Elizabeth Hyde Park in the snow when it's silent outside at night, Seminary Co-Op bookstore, Margarita special night[s] at Tecalitlan, the elimination of the Blue Line... more ›

Weekend Jaunts

Weekend Jaunts

Happy St. Patty’s Day, folks! We are taking off a little early this morning, for what we hope will be a long drunken day filled with debauchery in celebration of wanting to be Irish. At about 10:45 a.m. the Chicago River will be full of Fluorescein, the chemical used in the annual dyeing of the river. The magnificent green can be seen from the Wacker Bridge on Michigan Ave and it should last about 30... more ›

Figure Skating — Chicago's Sport

Figure Skating — Chicago's Sport

Unlike sledding, which generally leaves us cranky at the cold reality of snow forcing itself into every possible crevice in our foolproof apparel defenses against it, we like ice skating. We like getting in the way of people who are really good at it because we're gawking at them with starry eyes. We like the sound it makes. We like watching skating of the figure variety on TV. more ›

Cabbies Go To Court to Get Surcharge

Cabbies Go To Court to Get Surcharge

The city seems to be dragging it's feet about implementing a $1/ride cab surcharge, so this week Chicago cab drivers went to court to try to force the issue. If the court grants their request, then Mayor Daley will have to issue an executive order to approve the temporary, 60-day surcharge. more ›

Anime Escape

Anime Escape

Chicagoist and its fellow cinemaphiles have it rough this weekend. With the college crowd on Spring Break, most of our favorite off-the-beaten-path movie houses (Block Cinema, Doc Films) are dark. Don’t even get us started on the mainstream box office this weekend. We know The Ring was a big hit, but we saw the sequel the first time, you know? As for the new Woody Allen film, we’re skipping that one too. Unlike the family dog, we only have to be hit on the nose with a newspaper twice before we learn our lesson. And as much as we love Joan Cusack and Buffy’s little sister, we’re not sure we can bring ourselves to see The Ice Princess especially when our local video store has The Cutting Edge on DVD. Now THAT'S an ice skating movie. more ›

Daley Sells Parks...We Just Couldn't Resist

Daley Sells Parks...We Just Couldn't Resist

Friends of the Parks, a parks advocacy organization, has criticized the Chicago Park District for permitting a 12-foot Nike swoosh to be emblazoned on a new park. Nike donated $500,000 to build a new artificial turf soccer field in Douglas Park, but some are saying that the logo is obtrusive and inappropriately commercializes what should be public space. more ›
