In Fine Spirits Debuts a Housemade Bitters à la Amer Picon
We caught wind this week that over the past several months, Cody Modeer, head bartender at In Fine Spirits in Andersonville, has been busy behind the scenes concocting his own potable bitters. And not just any bitters, but a replica of the fabled Amer Picon, a French spirit akin to Italian amaro that has been unavailable in the United States for some time. (Respectively, "amer" and "amaro" are the French and Italian words for "bitter.") Modeer debuted the stuff on Wednesday. In typical bitters-fanatic fashion, 24 hours later we're bellied-up at Cody's bar, angling for a sip.
Do This: Locavore Dinner at In Fine Spirits
Jim Javenkoski, the founder of Local Food Wisdom, will be hosting the latest in his series of locavore dinners at In Fine Spirits on January 24. The goal of Local Food Wisdom is to bring people together to eat, learn and discuss local food issues, with "casual yet informative conversations." Sounds much more fun, and much tastier, than listening to a lecture! 5 courses, all-inclusive with beer pairings, will cost you $75. The video after the jump is a look at the first Local Food Wisdom dinner, hosted by StarGrazer Cafe - it will make you want to quit your job and go work on a farm, especially on a grey day like today.
Northwest Meets Midwest: Harvest Season Wine Tastings

So it’s a treat that winemaker Julia Cattrall from Lumus winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley has slipped in one more trip to Chicago before the season beckons her home.

The "spice" route includes Andie's, Big Jones, Charlie's Ale House, Fireside, M. Henry and others. It's also a good walk along either route, so all those sweets don't go to your, um, wherever.
A Bastille Day Buffet
There have been so many Bastille Day events happening around town in the past few days you'd think the original thirteen colonies rebelled from France. Since there's a seeming load of Francophiles in town we've compiled a list of Bastille Day events and prix fixe menus for you to consider.
Do This: Eat Local/Drink Local At In Fine Spirits
Koval Distillery in Andersonville has been making some noise of late, as the city's only distillery. They've also been making some amazing spirits and liqueurs, from what we tasted a couple weeks back at Uncommon Ground Devon's Friday Farmers Market.
