Sox Sort Out Starting Rotation
Pitchers and catchers reported to White Sox spring training yesterday, officially kicking off preparations for the 2011 season. With a potential surplus of starting pitching, there were lots of questions about how the rotation would shake out. Sox management wasted little time in clarifying the situation.
White Sox At the Midway Point
The White Sox ended the first half of the season as the hottest team in baseball - winners of an incredible 25 of their last 30 games. They’ll enter the second half trying to extend an eight game streak when they face the Minnesota Twins tonight to open a ten game road trip. After falling 9 1/2 game back in the AL Central by mid-June, the Sox stormed back and passed the Twins and Tigers to grab first place at the Break. Oh, and they won the inaugural (and unfortunately named) BP Crosstown Cup by winning four of six against the Cubs. Paul Konerko and Alex Rios have been steady performers all season, but only recently has Carlos Quentin displayed the bat that made him an MVP candidate in 2008. Similarly, the pitching staff took a while to get going, they've been a key component to the team's resurgence.
White Sox Lose Peavy For Year
Jake Peavy left Tuesday's White Sox - Angels game in the second inning with a back injury, and the news does not sound good for the Sox pitcher acquired in a high profile trade last season. The initial diagnosis following an MRI on Wednesday is a detachment of the latissimus dorsi muscle in his back. I didn't know what that was either, but when I asked my physical therapy student wife, she winced at the thought of such an injury. Which may explain why Peavy will be consulting with the likes of sports orthopedic surgeons James Andrews and Lewis Yocum to determine the best course of action. Surgery looks likely for the right hander to repair the reattach the muscle. And the injury will most likely sideline Peavy for the rest of the 2010 season.
Peavy Is A-Comin'
Sox fans rejoice: that big trade deadline get - ace pitcher Jake Peavy - will finally get a start in for the White Sox this Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Peavy was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in San Diego but went 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA in four starts for the Sox Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte. [ESPN]
Peavy Looks Ready
In his third minor league rehab start, White Sox starter Jake Peavy pitched five innings of shutout baseball and looks ready to join the Sox rotation. While Peavy allowed base runners in each of his five innings, none reached home plate during his 80-pitch outing. In three minor league starts, the former Cy Young winner is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA. His progress toward returning to the big leagues comes none too soon -- Jose Contreras had another horrific outing against the Red Sox on Monday night, and appears headed to the bullpen. Peavy could take Contreras' spot in the rotation and make his White Sox debut against the Yankees on Saturday. We'll know more about Peavy's return date after he and team officials meet on Tuesday.
Peavy Almost Perfect
Making his first rehab start since going on the DL in June, newly acquired White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy pitched three scoreless innings for the Sox Triple-A affiliate Thursday night. Taking the mound for the Charlotte Knights, Peavy allowed one hit and walked one in his three-innings of work. After a successful first outing, Peavy is expected to make two additional appearances for Charlotte before joining the major league roster toward the end of the month.
Peavy Saying All The Right Things
To hear him talk about, Jake Peavy's been chomping at the bit to hit the Windy City. In an interview yesterday with ESPN 1000 AM, Peavy said, "Things all happen for a reason and like I said, I couldn't be happier today to be putting on a White Sox uniform and be here with these guys." He also addressed the rumors this past winter that had him being shipped to Wrigley: "I think we got pretty close and [I] was excited about that, simply because I love the city of Chicago. I know a bunch of guys on the Cubs and like what they have built over there and [how I] was going to become part of that." Yesterday, Peavy threw 50 pitches off the mound before the Sox-Yankees game, the first time he's throw off a mound in six weeks.
Another Pitcher Turns Down Sox
First, it was Jake Peavy turning down the White Sox. Now, it's the Astro's Roy Oswalt. Speculation swirled over the weekend that the veteran ace may be on his way to the Sox, but he also turned the team down.
Peavy Vetos Trade
Yesterday ended up being a pretty crappy day to be a Sox Fan. The day started off great, with rumors that the White Sox and Padres has consummated a trade that would bring Cy Young-caliber pitcher Jake Peavy to the South Side in return for a few prospects. By lunchtime, however, clubhouse gossip emerged, saying that Peavy hadn't had any change of heart regarding his desire to remain in the National League -- not good news for the South Side. A 20-1 thumping at the hands of the Minnesota Twins clearly wouldn't help the situation -- it just showed how desperate the Pale Hose are for pitching. Word came from San Diego not long after the final pitch that, in fact, Peavy had vetoed the trade and will remain with the Padres. "San Diego is the place for us," Peavy told reporters at Petco Park yesterday. "We've made that decision for the time being." Meanwhile, Sox GM Kenny Williams needs to formulate his next plan to address the Sox's pitching woes.
Jake Peavy About to Land In Chicago?
There is once again a good deal of speculation that San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy may be on his way to Chicago... only the latest rumors involve his landing on the South Side. The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting this morning that the White Sox have proposed a four-player trade that would slot the Padres ace into the Sox rotation. Among those expected to be sent to San Diego are pitchers Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda, but top prospect Gordon Beckham would not be part of the deal.
Cubs Give Up Pie
With 2009 rolling around, many of us made New Years resolutions -- go to bed earlier, save more money, eat better. For the Cubs, apparently, their resolution was giving up Pie. The North Siders traded Felix Pie, their onetime center fielder of the future, to the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend in return for two pitchers. In return for Pie - who will perhaps be best remembered for his twisted testicle - the Cubs landed left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and Class A right-hander Henry Williamson. Olson was just 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA in 26 starts for Baltimore last season.
Cubs Balk at Peavy Trade
Well, that was interesting. It seems the Cubs won't be dealing for Padres ace Jake Peavy after all. With the Padres having set a Thursday deadline for the trade, Cubs GM Jim Hendry didn't pull the trigger, telling ESPN, "Kevin [Towers, San Diego GM] and I had a lot of very healthy, very honest discussions. But at the end of the day, we had to do what was best for the organization. I just felt like when I weighed the total value of the talent going out against the economics of what was coming in, it was in the best interests of our organization not to make this deal." With the Peavy deal now done for, the Cubs will instead focus on landing a much-needed left-handed bat. Names that have been floated include Milton Bradley, Raul Ibanez and Bobby Abreu.
Cubs Close to Peavy Deal... or Not
So are the Cubs about to land Jake Peavy or not? With baseball's Winter Meetings in full swing this week in Sin City, there are conflicting reports about just how close the Cubs are to landing the Padres ace. The Chicago Tribune says that a deal sending Mark DeRosa to the Philadelphia and Jason Marquis plus Phillies prospects to San Diego is ready to be completed if the Cubs choose to pull the trigger. Meanwhile, ESPN reports that a deal is not imminent and if Peavy lands on the North Side, it won't happen this week.

Morning Box Score
After almost a week off, the Blackhawks didn't miss a beat in dousing the Calgary Flames 6-1 on Sunday night. The 'Hawks were up 3-0 in the second before the Flames even got on the board. It was a distribution of wealth on offense as six players scored goals for Chicago: Havlat, Johnson, Kane, Toews, Versteeg, and Brouwer. It was Toews first goal after a 12 goalless games and he was happy to put it behind him:
“It’s a good feeling,” Toews said. “I’ve been telling myself that the team’s playing great and that’s the most important thing. If we were losing and things weren’t going well as a team, there’d be a little bit more pressure when pucks aren’t going in, but they did tonight. Hopefully, that means there are going to be a lot more to come.”Things also got a bit chippy by the third period as the game was stopped for a few fights but that is what hockey's all about, Charlie Brown. Cristobal Huet got the win in net, stopping 22 of 23 shots. The win moved the 'Hawks into sole position of second place in the division.

Derrek Lee Joins Cubs Fight Club
The fireworks continued to fly this past weekend at the again-not-so-Friendly Confines. Derrek Lee became the latest member of the Cubs to throw a punch, when he went after San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Young in the fourth inning after being plunked on the hand by a pitch. The altercation led to a bench-clearing brawl. In addition to Young and Lee, Padres pitcher Jake Peavy and Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry were also tossed from...
