Properly Sauced - The Vesper, James Bond’s Original Drink

Before “Shaken not Stirred,” medium-dry vodka martinis and fresh bottles of Stoli, James Bond was a drinker of a different sort. In his initial outing as Britain’s favorite superhero spy, he instructed the bartender to make him a drink, which has become one of our favorites. Later, the drink was identified with the love interest of the story, Vesper Lynd. We love the Vesper for a lot of reasons - the association with the dapper gentleman of the 60s, the combination of Gin and Lillet Blanc - but it has faded from public view in favor of flashier, neon-colored successors.

Sorry to get your hopes up, but we've just gotten official word from CIFF that Quantum of Solace will definitely not screen at the festival. However, we still don't know what will be screening in that Surprise Event slot, so it's worth a gamble.

Update: Sorry, guys. The CIFF has officially denied the new Bond is showing here.

No, that headline is not redundant. One of our favorite movie theaters, the Music Box opened in 1929. By the 70’s however it had added porn to its schedule in order to stay afloat. It actually closed in 1977 but was reopened in 1983 after renovations. It’s been showing the best in foreign, revival and indie film ever since. Love that organ. In 2003 the theater was sold to the building’s owner, William Schopf....

We usually hate to just throw up a bunch of stuff in list form, but we’ve gotten wind of so many cool things that we just had to share 'em all. The kicker? They’re all free. No matter what your taste in celluloid or pixel, you’re bound to find something here to whet your whistle: Chicago indie flick The Minx is having a free screening on Saturday at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave. Director Michael...

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing. Austinist said goodbye to their co-editor (sell-out) and played rumor monger on the SXSW lineup. And when dozens of dead birds littered downtown Austin, it's...

This weekend is the Midwest Literary Festival in Aurora. All kinds of cool things are going on and there are some great authors to see. Guest speakers include: Joyce Carol Oates (she was awarded the 2006 Chicago Tribune Literary Prize, she’ll accept at The Chicago Humanites Festival in November), Emily Giffen, Elizabeth Kostova, Dennis Lehane and our funny-boy crush, Harry Shearer. Some of the lectures look excellent too, here are some of the highlights, according...

There’s been a lot of ink spilled about Chicago’s cornucopia of music events this summer, but yesterday’s RedEye also clued us in to several film festivals that are happening in the next three months, including ones we’ve covered like the Silent Film Festival and the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival as well as upcoming events we haven’t like Reeling’s Gay Games fest, the Onion City Experimental Film Festival and the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Here are...

We’ll admit it: we’re Anglophiles. We check in regularly on our British cousins and try to impress our friends with half-assed James Bond and John Cleese impersonations. And when we discovered a new crop of British imports opening on Chicago stages last week, we couldn't resist. Funny how a week of watching anxious characters speaking the Queen’s English reminded us why so many Brits glorify life on our side of the pond.
