Because of Chicago's plethora of larger than life figures during this era, our local heroes are well represented on this list.
A Look Back At The Posters Of Our Youth
Duerson's Death Ruled Suicide, Brain Donated to Research
The Dade County (Fla.) medical examiner has ruled former Bears safety Dave Duerson's death a suicide. Duerson was found dead in his Miami home Thursday with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Super Bowl QB McMahon Hits Dallas to Stress Hit Risks
After 15 NFL seasons and numerous concussions throughout his pro and college career, former '85 Bear Jim McMahon is headed to Dallas before Super Bowl XLV to stress the dangers of concussions, elaborating on his current memory loss from years of hard hits to the head.
'85 Bears to Relive Glory Days
If ever there was a sports team that's milked a title, it's the 1985 Bears. Twenty-five years later, Da Bears team of the Punky QB, Sweetness, Mongo, Samurai Mike and the Fridge are still standing upon a pedestal like no other champs. Hell... their coach, Mike Ditka, is practically a saint in this town. So it should come as no surprise, as the silver anniversary of their Super Bowl XX title approaches, that the players from that team are holding an event to commemorate their feat.
Friday Flashback: The QB Battle of '89
As Chicago prepares for another pre-season appearance from the CutlerChrist tomorrow night, the Flashback Desk is taking us back to 1989, when the Bears were in the midst of another QB changeover. Would it be Jim McMahon? Mike Tomczak? Jim Harbaugh? Mike Ditka announced the quarterback free-for-all before the season and it was anyone's guess who would end up helming the team.
McMahon Still Waiting for White House Invite
It's been nearly 25 year since the Bears won Super Bowl XX -- doesn't that make us feel old! -- but the Bears team that brought home the Lombardi Trophy has never received their customary visit to the White House. Back in 1986, the Challenger Space Shuttle tragedy resulted in their visit being postponed, and it was never rescheduled.
Playboy's Assets Continue To Sag; Maybe McMahon Can Help
Crain's Chicago Business reports that Playboy is getting deeper into trouble: they might be delisted on the New York Stock Exchange if they don't turn things around pretty quickly. Despite huge budget cuts, CEO Christie Hefner stepping down and other cost-cutting measures, times are still tough for the Chicago-based heritage men's magazine.
Happy Anniversary, Super Bowl Shuffle
Given the Bears' putrid showing against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, it was easy to overlook the fact that yesterday was the 23rd anniversary of the second greatest moment in Chicago Bears history: the filming of the famous "Super Bowl Shuffle" video. Coincidentally, the Bears filmed the video the day after a loss on national television: in this case, a loss to the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, the only loss the eventual Super Bowl Champion Bears would suffer all season. Not even Kanye, Lupe, or the genius Lil Wayne could write a rhyme like, "I'm the punky QB, known as McMahon/ When I hit the turf, I've got no plan/ I just throw my body all over the field/ I can't dance, but I can throw the pill."
