Totally debunking the idea that all Chicagoans are fat and lazy, a bunch of extremely fit runners bounded up every single story of the John Hancock building last weekend. That's 97 flights of stairs, which sounds as much like death and mayhem to us now as it did last year.
Kidding. But if Chicagoist attempted to run up the John Hancock building's 97 flights we're pretty sure our heart would fail. We can barely run up a flight or two in the El on occassion.
Among the 12 designs are two Chicago landmarks -- the John Hancock Center and Mies van der Rohe's minimalist apartment buildings at 860-880 N. Lake Shore Dr. Trib architecture critic Blair Kamin, however, takes exception to the small number of Chicago landmarks included in the set -- and he's absolutely right. If there's one this this city knows -- other than hot dogs and pizza -- it's revolutionary architecture. Blair mentions Marina City and the Farnsworth House as among those which should have been included, and Chicagoist agrees.
You know that really pretty church across the street from the John Hancock Building? Yeah, that one. Well, the folks who belong to the Fourth Presbyterian Church voted 611-173 yesterday to approve sale of land behind the church for the construction of a 64-story condominium. In return the church gets $25 million, and use of the first six floors for various church outreach programs. Architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago has designed the world's largest tower. The skyscraper is called Burj Dubai and will be built in the United Arab Emirates. At over 2,000 feet tall, Burj Dubai will be almost twice the height of the John Hancock Center.
