As many predicted, the Bears cut QB Chad Hutchinson yesterday, just days after naming Kyle Orton the new starting QB and dropping Hutchinson to 4th on the depth chart. Hutchinson signed with the Bears following Rex Grossman's season-ending knee injury. Slow to pick up Terry Shea's overly complex playbook, he didn't see action until Dec. 5th. That was the high point of his Bears career as he went 18-30 with 3 TD passes (115.0 rating)....

Here We Go Again
Chicagoist knows it OK to make mistakes so long as we use them as learning experiences. That's what we heard from parents, teachers and bosses through the years. Unfortunately, the Bears brass didn't seem to learn that lesson. Last year's fiasco of a season resulted primarily because the team lacked capable backups at quarterback when Rex Grossman went down in week 3 with torn knee ligaments. Bears fans endured watching Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel...
Courting QB's
Having given up on Jonathan Quinn and Jeff George, the Bears begin their auditions for a backup quarterback today with Kurt Warner's visit to Halas Hall. The former leage and Super Bowl MVP spent last season with the New York Giants, where he lost the starting job to rookie Eli Manning mid-season. Warner explained the other day, in Arizona: You always want to sign as a starter. I still believe I can be a starter...
QB Carousel
The first round of cuts came yesterday throughout the NFL, with teams primarily casting off players whose contracts tied their hands financially. Salary Cap cuts. But the Bears' first move involved cutting a player who wasn't much of a cap concern -- Jonathan Quinn. Signed to back up Rex Grossman, he failed miserably as a starting QB. After losing his three starts, the team started rookie Craig Krenzel while signing just about every out-of-work retread...
Even Shoop Lasted 3 Seasons
Following a season in which the Bears ranked last in the NFL in total yards and points, offensive coordinator Terry Shea was fired on Tuesday. Having previously served as quarterbacks coach within the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs offensive sytem, Bears fans cheered his hiring less than one year ago when new coach Lovie Smith named him the successor to John Shoop. But when the team goes 5-11 and ranks last offensively, somebody had to be...
With the 4th Pick...
Another painful Bears season wrapped up Sunday, with the Packers avenging their earlier loss 31-14. In the rout, the Packers tied a team record with 9 sacks. And the Packers, having already locked up the NFC North title, mostly played their backups. Packers QB Brett Favre sat after the Pack took a 14-7 lead in the 2nd quarter. No matter, they still killed the Bears.
We Can Dance if We Want To
The Safety Dance, of course. Because the Bears knocked off the Tennesee Titans in OT by scoring a safety, giving them a 19-17 victory. The Bears victory was only the second overtime game in the history of the NFL won on a safety.
Giant Killers
DOA for much of the first half, the Bears scored 20 quick points in part due to Giant turnovers on 3 consecutive offensive plays. The Bears scored a touchdown with 5:13 left in the second quarter to get their first points. Ike Hilliard fumbled on the next Giants possession and the Bears capitalized by scoring another TD 2 plays later. Kurt Warner threw an interception on the next Giants play, which turned into a field goal and then the exact same events occured on their next possession as well. With a field goal as time expired, the Bears went into halftime with a 20-14 lead!
Bear Win 23-13
Halloween night looked to offer up a scary matchup in front of a nation-wide ESPN audience between the 1-5 Bears and the 1-5 San Francisco 49ers. The Bears came away with the 23-13 victory, thanks in part to a big plays by a number of rookies.
Krenzel to get start on Sunday
The Jonathan Quinn era is officially over (for now) in Chicago. On Tuesday, Bears coach Lovie Smith named rookie QB Craig Krenzel as Sunday's starter. Rex Grossman, a grizzled veteran with 6 NFL starts under his belt, will be helping Krenzel prep for the game.
Bucs Beat Bears
Quinn himself sounded as relieved as any Bears fan that he was off the field. "Coach Smith said if we stalled out, there was a good chance they would start Craig in the second half. You have to admire the man for being a man of his word. If you say you are going to do something, you do it. He did." Now is Quinn headed off the roster? With the team eying former #1 Draft pick Tim Couch, will the Bears cut Quinn to open up a roster spot?
Can They Bring Back Jimmy Mac?
Chicagoist has watched enough football in our lifetime to know that when your defense scores more points than your offense, you're going to lose the game! The Bears proved that true once again, losing to the Washington Redskins 13-10. The Bears' lone touchdown came on a 70-yard interception return by Jerry Azumah, in his first game back following a neck injury. The Bears' defense outscored their offense 7-3. Ouch!
Bears Lose to Eagles 19 - 9
This week, the Philadelphia Eagles came to Soldier Field and left with a 19 - 9 victory. Backup QB Jonathan Quinn, starting in place of the injured Rex Grossman completed 26 of 43 passes for 215 yards, clearly was overmatched in his first NFL start in 3 years. And what was with the Bears abandoning the running game? You're starting a rusty QB, you've got the NFC's leading rusher in your backfield, and you only run 13 times? If Terry Shea keeps doing things like that, Chicago may start demanding they bring back John Shoop! Well at least Chicagoist can rest assured that the Bears won't lose this coming weekend -- it's their bye week. And they've still beaten the Packers!
Painful Loss!
Three weeks into the season, and the Bears defense already lost Jerry Azumah, Alfonso Boone, Mike Brown and Charles Tillman for all or most of the season. Brian Urlacher sitting because of his hamstring-- which caused him to miss the whole pre-season--is not a good sigh. And now the Bears lose their field general on the offensive side of the ball. The Bears will now have to rely on Jonathan Quinn at QB for the rest of the season. Unless they decide to sign one of the free agent QB's still looking for a job, like Jeff George... What do you think the should do at QB -- stick with Quinn or look for a more experienced passer?
