The White Sox made Jon Garland's first trip back to U.S. Cellular Field one he'd rather forget. more ›

Williams Strikes Out Again

Williams Strikes Out Again

Chicagoist certainly doesn't envy White Sox GM Kenny Williams and the difficult task he has to rebuild a team that lost 90 games in 2007. On Tuesday, he once again was overmatched by the opposition and missed the ball on potential help for his club. Recent reports suggested that the Sox were close to landing third baseman Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins — a player that Ozzie Guillen referred to as his "fourth son."... more ›

White Sox Trade Garland

White Sox Trade Garland

The White Sox traded starting pitcher Jon Garland to the Anaheim Angels on Monday in return for shortstop Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera, 33, hit .301 with 86 RBIs for the Angels while also winning his second Gold Glove award for his fielding. Garland, 28, went 10-13 for the White Sox while posting a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts. This move creates as many questions as it does answers for the Sox. We wonder what Kenny Williams... more ›

Extra, Extra

Extra, Extra

It's been confirmed. Orlando Jones, John Stroger's godson who avoided being interviewed by the FBI in conjunction with a hosptial shakedown in Las Vegas, committed suicide on a Michigan beach. Not only is this a tragedy for the people involved, but we're really disappointed with the Jesuits, as well -- The Rev. Donald McGuire has been convicted of molesting two boys in Wisconsin, faces a new accusation of sexual abuse, and his Jesuit religious... more ›

Cubs and Sox Face off in Arizona

Cubs and Sox Face off in Arizona

The Cubs and White Sox have been getting in baseball shape down in Arizona for the past couple weeks, and for the most part it's been a pretty quiet Spring Training for both clubs. Other than Kerry Wood's hot tub incident, and Ozzie's recent war of words with former pitcher Brandon McCarthy, the spring has been pretty quiet. Really quiet, actually. Sunday, however, things got a little more raucous as the White Sox and Cubs... more ›

2006 Baseball Preview

2006 Baseball Preview

What a difference a year makes! Last year, as we embarked on a new baseball season, we discussed the eternal optimism of Chicago baseball fans in light of decades of futility. But in 2005 something most unexpected and most wonderful happened. Chicago won a World Series! And it wasn't even the Chicago team that many thought had a shot at the title. While the Cubs entered the season picked by many to reach the postseason,... more ›

Garland Re-Signs With Sox

Garland Re-Signs With Sox

"To the victor goes the spoils", indeed. Jon Garland avoided arbitration this offseason, signing a three-year, $29 million dollar contract with the White Sox yesterday. This year Garland had the breakout season that everyone expected of him when he was drafted by the Cubs then later traded to the Sox. Even though he had a subpar second half, Garland still finished with a record of 18-10 with a 3.50 ERA and a league-leading three... more ›

Moving West, Staying Put

Moving West, Staying Put

The off season remains a busy period for Chicago's two baseball teams as they continue to lock in their rosters for 2006 and beyond. The Cubs officially said goodbye this week to Nomar Garciaparra, who agreed to a 1-year deal with the L.A. Dodgers. With the Dodgers, Nomar will move over to first base. Nomar's injury-plagued season and a half were nothing like Cubs fans expected from the former All Star shortstop. He played just... more ›

Sox Pull off Another Trade. More Deals to Follow?

Sox Pull off Another Trade. More Deals to Follow?

Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's? more ›

Guillen Wins AL Manager of the Year

Guillen Wins AL Manager of the Year

Rarely do World Champion teams have as few candidates for major post-season awards as the White Sox. Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland finished 5th and 6th in the voting for Cy Young. Paul Konerko is unlikely to break the top 5 in MVP voting. That just goes to show how the White Sox won as a team rather than riding some superstar's coattails. more ›

Marathon Men

Marathon Men

The Astros jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Jon Garland before the White Sox finally figured out Roy Oswalt in the 5th inning. Joe Crede lead off with a home run and by the time the inning ended, the Sox sent 11 guys to the plate and took a 5-4 lead. The score remained that way until Jason Lane doubled off Dustin Hermanson in the 8th to tie the game 5-5. The score remained tied at 5 for 6 innings, despite both teams having a number of opportunities to score. Astros left countless men on base -- it seemed like every inning they had two on with zero or one out. But the bullpen held them inning after inning. Finally, "scrub" Geoff Blum hit a home run to right field to break the tie. A couple of infield hits and a couple of walks added another run. Damaso Matre started the 14th for the Sox, and when two runners reached base Ozzie Guillen brought in Mark Buehrle to record the final out and seal the victory for the White Sox. more ›

Can't Rain on Our Parade

Can't Rain on Our Parade

That positive premonition was right, as the White Sox won both games at the Cell this weekend! They took Game 1 5-3 Saturday night and won 7-6 in Game 2 Sunday night to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series at they now head down to Houston. more ›

First Time Since 1959

First Time Since 1959

While the White Sox dismissed the Red Sox and Angels in pretty short order, this series promises to be a much more tightly contested affair. With both teams sporting incredible pitching rotations, the series should be one low-scoring pitchers' dual after another. The Astros look tough with their rotation that includes Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Roy Oswalt. But the White Sox foursome of Jose Contreras, Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland and Freddy Garcia look like they're ready to go toe-to-toe. more ›

White Sox Win the Pennant! White Sox Win the Pennant!

White Sox Win the Pennant! White Sox Win the Pennant!

In convincing fashion, the 2005 Sox demonstrated that they are clearly the best team in the American League, defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 5 games. After dropping Game 1 to the Angels and squeaking by in the controversial Game 2, the Sox headed out to Anaheim and dominated the Angels, winning all three games to clinch the AL Pennant. more ›

Controversy With Sox Victory

Controversy With Sox Victory

With Pierzynski called safe, Ozzie Guillen sent Pablo Ozuna in to run for him. Ozuna stole second base, and then Joe Crede smashed a double off the wall in far left field. Ozuna scored, Sox won! more ›

Bring on the Angels

Bring on the Angels

Following their 5-3 victory Monday night, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim eliminated the New York Yankees and earned themselves a red eye flight to Chicago to face off against the well rested White Sox Tuesday night in the ALCS. The Sox will send Jose Contreras to the mound against The Angels' Paul Byrd. more ›

Can't Watch!

Can't Watch!

Maybe Comcast was just trying to spare us some misery last night. However, if the satellite problems were going to prevent Chicagoist from watching 5 innings of the game, they should have chosen to blackout the last five. more ›

Ozzie's Right!

American League Wins All Star Game

American League Wins All Star Game

As Fox repeatedly reminded us last night, "This time, it still counts." As in the winning league's representative in the World Series gets home field advantage. So it's a good thing for the White Sox that the AL won the All Star Game 7-5 last night. more ›

Five Chicago All Stars

Five Chicago All Stars

Major League Baseball announced its All Star rosters over the holiday weekend, and at least five Chicago players will be in Detroit for the game on July 12th. Representing the White Sox will be Paul Konerko, Jon Garland and Mark Buehrle. Konerko was a bit of a surprise, considering his .247 batting average. But it's kind of a make-up call for last year's snub when he was hitting close to .300 at the time. Garland and Buehrle clearly deserve their selections. In fact, one or the other is likely to be the starting AL pitcher for the game. Having already earned $15,000 bonuses for making the team, each have an additional $10,000 bonus riding on starting the game. more ›

Vote Fraud on All Chicago Team?

Vote Fraud on All Chicago Team?

The Trib named its All-City team leading up the first meeting between the White Sox and Cubs this year. As the second crosstown series approaches, the Trib is allowing its readers to pick their team. Chicagoist is a little skeptical of the result thus far, however. We make no excuses for our allegiance to the South Siders and the Sox do sport the best record in baseball, but we still think the fan selected All-City... more ›

All-Chicago Team

All-Chicago Team

It's the eve of the first meeting between the Cubs and the White Sox in 2005. For the players, it's an off day. But their fans are beginning to get riled up across the city. Debates, and probably fist fights, have fans of both teams disagreeing on the merits of their team vs. the other team. While the Sox are clearly the better team, reason played little part in these debates. And sometimes reason is... more ›

Sox Host Orioles in Key Series

Sox Host Orioles in Key Series

Who would have thought when the season started, that this weekend's 4-game set between the White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles would be such a key series? And the early storyline -- Sosa's return to Chicago -- ended up not happening as Sosa landed himself on the DL this week. more ›

Garland Earns A+ Against A's

Garland Earns A+ Against A's

We're about 3 weeks into the Major League Baseball season, and the best pitcher in town probably wouldn't have made everybody's top 10 list going into the season. Demoted to the 5th starter's spot in the White Sox rotation, Jon Garland has been outstanding so far. more ›

Big Break

Big Break

Actually, two big breaks is more appropriate. The first big break is the one discovered in White Sox ace Mark Buehrle's foot. In a freak accident, Buehrle felt something pop while shagging fly balls in the outfield yesterday. An x-ray showed a hairline fracture and now Buehrle is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. more ›
