Yesterday morning, WSCR 670 AM reported that free swinging White Sox infielder Juan Uribe has been placed on waivers by the team. Uribe had been competing for the second base position since he was relieved of his position as shortstop when the Sox traded for Orlando Cabrera from the L.A. Angels over the winter, and by most accounts he was performing well. When a player is waived, the team has the option to trade him within two business days, keep the player on the team if no offers are made for him, or release him with full pay.

Sure, it's still damn cold out. And the snow keeps coming. And coming. But spring is just around the corner. How do we know? Because Spring Training is finally upon us.

Chicagoist certainly doesn't envy White Sox GM Kenny Williams and the difficult task he has to rebuild a team that lost 90 games in 2007. On Tuesday, he once again was overmatched by the opposition and missed the ball on potential help for his club. The White Sox traded starting pitcher Jon Garland to the Anaheim Angels on Monday in return for shortstop Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera, 33, hit .301 with 86 RBIs for the Angels while also winning his second Gold Glove award for his fielding. Garland, 28, went 10-13 for the White Sox while posting a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts. Last year at this time, Juan Uribe was busy gunning out Red Sox, Angels and Astros at first base as the White Sox plowed through the playoffs on their way to the World Series title. With no playoffs this year, Uribe's home in the Dominican Republic and apparently up to no good as he's accused of having a role in a shooting that took place on Friday.

With the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers in town for a 3-game set this week, Sox fan were anxious to see how their team would play against the only team in baseball with a better record. Fans would get a better idea whether the Tigers are for real, or simply got off to a hot start.

Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's?

Already up 3-0 on the Houston Astros in the World Series, the White Sox swept the Astros by winning Game 4 1-0. The lone run was scored by Willie Harris on a single by World Series MVP Jermaine Dye with two outs in the 8th inning.

That positive premonition was right, as the White Sox won both games at the Cell this weekend! They took Game 1 5-3 Saturday night and won 7-6 in Game 2 Sunday night to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series at they now head down to Houston.

Really, the game was over by the end of the first inning as the White Sox jumped all over Matt Clement for 5 runs, including three on a home run by A.J. Pierzynski. Paul Konerko knocked one out in the third and Juan Uribe drove in two more with a long ball in the bottom of the 4th to counter Boston's two in the top of the frame. Scott Podsednik hit his first home run in a Sox uniform in the 6th inning to drive in 3 of the 4 runs they added that inning. Pierzynski homered again in the 8th and Willie Harris drove in yet another insurance run.

Chicagoist learned what it's like to be a Cubs fan over the past week. No, we haven't begun drinking at noon and we can still name the opponent without having to read it off the centerfield scoreboard. What we learned is what it's like to have your team go a whole week without a single victory, something Cubs fans have endured three times this season. However, such futility is a novelty for the White Sox.

The Trib named its All-City team leading up the first meeting between the White Sox and Cubs this year. As the second crosstown series approaches, the Trib is allowing its readers to pick their team. Chicagoist is a little skeptical of the result thus far, however.
