Call it a Rebuild: White Sox Trade Santos, Shop Danks

If the hiring of Robin Ventura or offering arbitration to Mark Buehrle weren't big enough signs for White Sox fans that the team is in a rebuilding mode, today's trade of Sergio Santos to Toronto for minor league prospect Nestor Molina should hammer home the obvious to even the most deluded fan of the Pale Hose. more ›

White Sox Get (Stuck With) Manny Ramirez

White Sox Get (Stuck With) Manny Ramirez

We're still trying to understand why White Sox GM Kenny Williams thought that Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez was the missing piece in the team's attempts to catch the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central race, and why owner Jerry Reinsdorf is willing to let Williams throw around his cash like he's "makin' it rain" in some club. After putting in a waiver claim last week for the 38 year old outfielder, the Sox were granted the claim on Friday. It now appears that the Dodgers are going to simply allow Manny to go to the Sox as a waiver claim rather than trying to working out a trade. more ›

White Sox Interested In Manny Ramirez

White Sox Interested In Manny Ramirez

While we believe that the White Sox's recent 5-10 record over their past 15 games greatly hurts their playoff hopes, GM Kenny Williams keeps looking for the deal that he thinks will help the club move past the Minnesota Twins and into the postseason as they are just 3.5 games out of first. The latest rumors are that Williams plans to claim L.A. Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez off waivers sometime this week in hopes of consummating a deal to acquire him. more ›

White Sox At the Midway Point

White Sox At the Midway Point

The White Sox ended the first half of the season as the hottest team in baseball - winners of an incredible 25 of their last 30 games. They’ll enter the second half trying to extend an eight game streak when they face the Minnesota Twins tonight to open a ten game road trip. After falling 9 1/2 game back in the AL Central by mid-June, the Sox stormed back and passed the Twins and Tigers to grab first place at the Break. Oh, and they won the inaugural (and unfortunately named) BP Crosstown Cup by winning four of six against the Cubs. Paul Konerko and Alex Rios have been steady performers all season, but only recently has Carlos Quentin displayed the bat that made him an MVP candidate in 2008. Similarly, the pitching staff took a while to get going, they've been a key component to the team's resurgence. more ›

Sox Show Gets Debut Date

Sox Show Gets Debut Date

In a move that's either perfectly timed or perfectly timed to jinx their big mid-season run, the White Sox are heading to the small screen this weekend in reality show form. Like "The Hills" with Ozzie and Kenny instead of L.C. and Heidi, "The Club" documents the White Sox' 2010 from January through the beginning of May in a six episodes, each an hour long. The series debuts this Sunday night at 8 p.m., but you'll need MLB Network to watch it. From Crain's: more ›

Fire Sale Sox?

Fire Sale Sox?

As the White Sox continue to struggle through the first half of the season, it's beginning to look like the end for the last vestiges of that 2005 World Series team. ESPN's Buster Olney, author of the best blog ESPN has (if you're willing to shell out the cash), tweeted out the rumors this morning, reporting, "The perception of other teams is that Paul Konerko is available right now." But the speculation had already started. Yesterday evening, Bruce Levine posted on ESPN blog that it's only a matter of time before Sox fans would have to bid farewell to the likes of Konerko, A.J. Pierzynski, Bobby Jenks and Mark Buehrle. Some of the rumors, according to Levine: more ›

Younger Guillen Creates Twitter Firestorm

Younger Guillen Creates Twitter Firestorm

Twitter just keeps causing problems for the Guillen clan. It was only a few weeks ago that White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen began tweeting and immediately drew the ire of team management. And while Sox GM Kenny Williams may have been worried about what Oz could say in under 140 characters, it's instead his middle son Oney who's caused the latest Twitter firestorm. more ›

Fans Flock to Weekend SoxFest

Fans Flock to Weekend SoxFest

Williams and Guillen are often the main attraction at SoxFest thanks to their outspoken natures, and once again it was those two who made headlines over the weekend for their public disagreement over whether the team should bring back Jim Thome. Thome, an Illinois native and popular player who played DH for 3 1/2 years, was traded mid-season to the L.A. Dodgers. Now a free agent, many want to see him return -- including Williams apparently. While early in the weekend he seemed to back Guillen's vision for a roster that offered maximum versatility, Williams also suggested the team needed Thome's left handed power. Guillen plans to employ a DH-by-committee in 2010, saying, "I don't want a DH just to be a DH. I want a guy to help me different ways." Guillen also expressed concerns that a reduced roll may not suit Thome. Williams appears ready to defer to his manager on the decision, we may know as soon as today. If the Sox do want to bring back Thome, they may need to act quickly -- before the Twins sign him. more ›

White Sox Hot Stove Heats Up

White Sox Hot Stove Heats Up

White Sox GM Kenny Williams always seems to have some deal in the works, so it's no surprise that the Sox are involved in some of the early trade chatter during the off-season. His boldest move last season was landing Jake Peavy from the cash-strapped San Diego Padres, and he might use the Padres' financial situation to try to land another of their star players. Preliminary talks suggest a three-way trade which would send Sox first baseman Paul Konerko to the Anaheim Angels, Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the White Sox and prospects from Chicago and Anaheim to San Diego. more ›

White Sox Wave White Flag

White Sox Wave White Flag

Having lost eight of their last nine games, and currently sitting six games back of the Detroit Tigers entering September, the White Sox have waved the white flag. Ahead of Monday night's deadline for players to be traded and eligible for the postseason with their new teams, White Sox GM Kenny Williams sent a memo to other teams that a number of veterans were available. As the deadline approached, the Sox announced that they had traded DH Jim Thome and pitcher Jose Contreras. more ›

Chicago Baseball's Jaywalking Elite Grows

Chicago Baseball's Jaywalking Elite Grows

We hate being yelled at by the Traffic Management ladies in yellow vests for stepping out into a crosswalk too early. Of course, if you're Lou Piniella, yelling won't really phase you. A week after Chicago White Sox GM Kenny Williams was ticketed for jaywalking in Seattle, Cubs manager Sweet Lou nearly got the same in San Diego. So is Chicago's baseball elite just that disrespectful of the law or are those Left Coasters just that vigilant? Lou got off with just a warning, which is good to him. Said Lou, "Kenny can afford it more than me." Of course, if we had the bullpen issues that Lou does, you'd be pretty likely to find us randomly roaming the streets of whatever city we were stuck in, mumbling incoherently to ourselves, too. [Tribune] more ›

Kenny Williams Ticketed for Jaywalking

While in Seattle with the team, White Sox GM Kenny Williams was cited for jaywalking on Monday afternoon outside Safeco Field. On his phone -- finalizing the Rios acquisition? -- while crossing outside a crosswalk, a Seattle traffic-control officer slapped Williams with a $56 ticket. Given the spending he did earlier in the day, we have a feeling this won't be getting submitted for reimbursement on his expense report. more ›

White Sox Acquire Rios

White Sox Acquire Rios

Kenny Williams, what did you do? We really thought you were smarter than this. We agreed with you when you traded for Jake Peavy, but we aren't so sure about your latest move. On Monday, the White Sox acquired Alex Rios from the Toronto Blue Jays after making a waivers claim for the 28 year old outfielder late last week. The Sox gave up nothing to the Jays, but assume the balance of Rios' 7-year, $69.8 million contract signed before the 2008 season. more ›

Sox Interested in Alex Rios... Really?

Sox Interested in Alex Rios... Really?

Kenny Williams is always full of surprises. More often than not, they're the good kind -- like when he pulled Jake Peavy out of a hat at the trading deadline. But the latest rumors involving the Sox seems like a head-scratcher at first glance. more ›

Have You Seen Our Colon?

Have You Seen Our Colon?

White Sox GM Kenny Williams wants to know if you've seen his Colon. Bartolo, that is. It may seem unlikely to lose sight of the rotund pitcher, but that's exactly what's happened. Scheduled to make a rehab start with their Triple-A team in Charlotte on Thursday after a stint in Arizona, the White Sox have been unable to get in touch with Colon. Said Williams, "Efforts to contact his agent have been successful. Their efforts to contact their client have not been so successful." more ›

Giants Scouting Jermaine Dye

Giants Scouting Jermaine Dye

Having just returned to .500 with last night's win against Cleveland, it's not yet clear whether the White Sox will be buyers or sellers when teams begin positioning themselves for the post season. For much of the season, it looked like the year was lost and that the organization would trade off highly paid veterans while letting their younger players develop. But as we approach the midway point, the Sox have begun to play better and look like the could compete in the AL Central - they're now just four games back of first place Detroit. more ›

It's 2005 All Over Again for Sox

It's 2005 All Over Again for Sox

Sure, we Sox fans hang onto 2005 almost as much as Bears fans do 1985. And sure, Scotty Pods seems to be reborn in his second tour of duty on the South Side. So is GM Kenny Williams trying to round up the whole gang again? more ›

Sox After Abreu

Sox After Abreu

While there was no mention of Bobby Abreu at this past weekend's SoxFest -- and in fact a player of his caliber would seem to be the antithesis of what GM Kenny Williams claimed he was trying to do -- rumors persist that the White Sox are negotiating with the free agent Abreu on a one year, eight million dollar deal. Neither side is denying the talks. more ›

Sox Reach Out to Fans at SoxFest

While the other baseball in team in town still disregards online media, Chicagoist had full access to this weekend's SoxFest, the annual winter festivities for White Sox fans and players. The three day kickoff to the 2009 season, SoxFest included town hall seminars, memorabilia for sale, autograph sessions with players, and interactive games and activities for Sox fans. more ›

Sox Fill Hole With Colon

Sox Fill Hole With Colon

While we were happy to see Javier Vazquez and his inflated salary depart from the White Sox's starting rotation, we were concerned about the team's ability to round out its pitching staff in '09. GM Kenny Williams hopes he's plugged at least one of the holes with his latest move. Reports are that the Sox have reached a deal with former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon. Having pitched for the Sox in 2003, this would mark Colon's second stint on the South Side. more ›

Obama Invited To Throw Out First Pitch

Obama Invited To Throw Out First Pitch

Sure, we're proud somebody from our home town was elected president. But even more importantly, the future Commander-in-Chief is a White Sox fan! So it comes as no big surprise that White Sox GM Kenny Williams wasted no time in inviting Obama to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day -- April 6, when the Sox will host the Kansas City Royals. more ›

Griffey Jr. to the Sox?

Griffey Jr. to the Sox?

Perhaps a few years later than initially expected, the White Sox are rumored to be acquiring Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. before today's trading, deadline according to FoxSports. The deal, in which the Sox will give up prospects, is supposedly awaiting Griffey's approval—he's a 10-and-5 player—before being officially announced. more ›
