The city Health Department shut down the main dining room at St. Xavier University on the south side yesterday in what was called an "unacceptable" rodent infestation.

  • Paramount Room is hosting their first beer dinner Wednesday night, a five-course dinner paired with selections from Duvel. The dinner runs from 7-10 p.m. and costs $55.
  • W're going to the screening of the documentary Saturday March15 at the Cultural Center. The movie, filmed by best friends Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, takes a look at how important the crop is to our agricultural economy and how hard it is to track where the food we grow goes once we sell it. It's a free screening sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council, but you will need to register, as seating is limited. (via)
  • From May 7 through May 13 Local H will hold a residency at Beat Kitchen. Each night will see the full performance of one of their studio albums, in chronological order, through their latest, 12 Angry Months. Take that Wilco!

In just a few short weeks, will hit the airwaves and we're counting down the days to the March 12 season premiere. In addition to placing the city's restaurant scene at the forefront of the series and the backdrop for the competition, there are three chefs with local ties competing for the title of "Top Chef."

We're huge fans of the Sunday kids' concerts at Beat Kitchen. This Sunday, take your toddler to see Little Miss Ann, a former CPS music teacher, fellow mama and one of our favorite local musicians. Her "Pirate Ship" song'll be stuck in your head for the rest of the weekend. The show starts at noon, and your $5 ticket includes a kid-friendly lunch of pizza and a juice box.

Some events in the next seven days to consider saving your freshly shoveled parking space with a few chairs.

Chicago's commercial rock community has always excelled in mixing and matching the various ingredients in its talent pool, and usually the results are greater than the sum of its parts (see Treaty of Paris as a prime example). Call it a mark of maturity or just settling into a groove, but there are some strong post-mall punk splinter groups making a statement in the city.

After months of spying and accounts of shooting around town, Bravo finally announced the contestants for the next season of "Top Chef" today (you can read the release here). While the lineup of chefs vying to impress Padma and company are largely from the coasts, three of the contestants have Chicago ties:

For many of us the holiday season is marked by a weight gain that makes the freshman fifteen seem like a case of simple water retention, spurred on by the flood of baked goods that appear in homes and offices everywhere. But with the huge range of fresh vegetables, herbs, and great cuts of meat available year round in Chicago, the wind chill shouldn't keep you from enjoying some healthy foods. While grilling out may not be an option for some, you can make a delicious steak at home and top it with a flavorful Chimichurri sauce. Chimichurri is a garlicky Argentinian marinade and sauce typically served on beef or chicken. We've found it also tastes fantastic on shrimp and fresh vegetables (as seen in the picture of fresh corn on the cob and grape tomatoes mixed in with some Chimichurri).

Moving forward in our quest to give you readers some options for going out on New Year's Eve so you aren't procrastinating.

Out of all of our celebrity chef crushes, Gordan Ramsay doesn't really crack the top three five ten. He just doesn't do it for us. There's something about the incessant swearing and love of horse meat that isn't attractive to Chicagoist. But he does do it for FOX viewers and restaurants that need a makeover on his Kitchen Nightmares show. We learned via Schadenfreude (and apparently there was an ad in the Reader as well)...

We HATE the term Black Wednesday.

We know you head to Beat Kitchen to enjoy the likes of artists like Plane, New Duncan Imperials and Deadstring Brothers. Be prepared for your toddler to start dragging you back out when they hear about the “Concerts for Kids” shows on Sunday afternoons … at the same Beat Kitchen where you were rockin’ the night before. Once a month, Beat Kitchen opens up its concert space for local talent that caters to the younger...

From the "things are tough all over" department: As if the folks at Jays didn't have enough to worry about with its recent bankruptcy filing, now two former executives of parent company Ubiquity Brands filed a lawsuit Friday claiming that they were fired in a corporate restructuring "without cause". Former Chief Financial Officer William McManaman and Chief Information Officer Gary Rietz claim their terminations are a violation of the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection...

Things slow down a little this week, but not by much. In fact, the only upswing to this week's slightly lighter musical calendar is that it doesn't force us to make as many tough decisions as last week! Apollo Sunshine is steeped in the psych-pop of the '60s, and we admit it's beginning to feel like we've been waiting since that decade for a proper follow-up to their last album. Maybe folks checking out their...

The city Health Department just sent out a press release announcing that Penang, the popular Malaysian restaurant and sushi bar at 2201 S. Wentworth, was shut down yesterday for "critical violations of the City Health Code" after being tipped off by a person calling 311, reporting the sight of a rat entering the building housing Penang. Among Penang's many offenses, inspectors found live fruit flies and rodent feces throughout the kitchen and "premises" (one can...

Our fourth day of the Green City Market Localvore Challenge went something like this: Chicagoist once again had some wonderful local eggs from Country Cottage Farm with mushrooms and onions for breakfast; for lunch, we took a beef patty from Heartland Meats (Chicagoist likes that since Piedmontese beef is lower in fat, it cooks in about 1/3 less time—hey, it was 3 p.m.; we were hungry!) and mixed it up with some mushrooms and added some chopped basil from our new plant (see photo); and for dinner, we took one of those sprouted wheat tortillas from Tiny Greens Kitchen we bought at Green City Market and topped it with some Wisconsin cheese and tomatoes, put it in the broiler with more of that fresh basil and—voila!—pizza. Throw in an apple or two and it was a great food day.

Looking to be famous? Think you know how to cook? Have the thick skin needed to put up with constant verbal abuse from an asshole Scotsman? Then polish your resumes, sharpen your knives and head to the Illinois Institute of Art on Wabash Wednesday. From 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. Fox is hosting an open casting call for the next season of Hell's Kitchen (via), hosted by the mercurial Gordon Ramsay. Producers are looking for...

When Moto’s Homaro Cantu said he’s worked with NASA to develop space food for astronauts because, “One day we’ll all have to start thinking about Mars,” it was a pretty “out there” comment. But statements like these come from Cantu, a modest, hospitable and friendly person, because, well, he’s borderline genius. The dishes he serves at his nationally acclaimed, four-star restaurant fit just this description. They’re totally “out there,” but they’re incredibly ingenious, creative, scientific,...

Would you like flies with that?

The summer sun has rejuvenated the DDaN column, so we're clocking back with our thoughts on a few of the week's notable concerts. Tonight, if you didn't get invited to see Fall Out Boy, and you're not heading to Liar's Club to listen to (and to buy) the new Queens Of the Stone Age at midnight, might we recommend checking out The Hourly Radio at The Note? If you dig Placebo, and you haven't yet...

The Comas have been at this shit for a while now. Originally formed in Chapel Hill, NC in 1998, their blistering brand of psychedelic-soaked garage rock has left a steady stream of sweaty, melted faces in its wake for nearly the past decade. They’ve collected some of the most desirable accolades an independent-spirited band can hope for, including contacts with North Carolina tastemakers Yep Roc and (currently) Vagrant Records, shoe shines from Pitchfork Media, Rolling...

Memorial Day weekend is nigh! That means summer is officially here and girl-watching season is in full force. We thought we’d dedicate today’s EOYW to all the ladies who make summer worthwhile. Amanda Leigh Moore has been cultivating that girl next door image her entire life. We’re not sure how Mandy has managed to avoid the pitfalls of excess that other Hollywood divas her age seem to revel in, but this movie and television star...

Carnivores are happy people. Or at least that’s the case for the ones buying their meat from Paulina Market. From the outside, this West Lakeview store, with its brick facade and minimal windows, offers few clues of what awaits inside. But pull open the front door, inhale, and that lovely aroma of smoky goodness is a telltale sign. If you still haven’t figured it out yet, the pink pig-head ticket dispenser by the entrance should clarify things. (Be sure to grab a number; you’ll need it.)

Well, we've already tried to hip you to tonight's free show at The Bottle, put there are plenty of other concerts to spend your time (and money) at this week.

We've got a little bit of everything today to get you out of the house and over the blues that have overtaken many because of this second Winter we have been experiencing. Besides, it is supposed to hit the 50's today, so time to celebrate.
