Looking Local for WhiskyFest Chicago 2011
This year, we looked at two distilleries that have contributed to the explosion of local craft distillers in recent years.
Local Whiskey Brand Hitting Stores In November
It has taken 90 years, but a boutique Chicago distillery is finally bringing back Chicago's whiskey distilling trade, which was abolished by prohibition. Distilled at Koval Distillery in Ravenswood, Lion's Pride Organic Whiskey, is due to reach stores in Chicago on November 6, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Named for Lion Birnecker, the son of Koval's owners Sonat and Robert Birnecker, Lion's Pride will come in four flavors--rye, oat, dark rye, and dark oat. The whiskey joins a line-up of vodka, liqueurs, and other spirits from the Birneckers' distillery.
Koval Distillery To Offer Tours
During WhiskyFest Chicago we wrote about the upcoming moves of Koval Distillery, including tours of their Andersonville facility. Those tours are now in full swing and, at $10 a head, are one of the best deals going. It's also a great way to learn about Koval's process of distilling, historical facts of making liquor and get to taste their spirits.
Do This: Eat Local/Drink Local At In Fine Spirits
Koval Distillery in Andersonville has been making some noise of late, as the city's only distillery. They've also been making some amazing spirits and liqueurs, from what we tasted a couple weeks back at Uncommon Ground Devon's Friday Farmers Market.
