If you told us before last night's game LeBron James and Dwyane Wade would each score at least 35 points, Derrick Rose would be scratched from the game with a groin strain and the Bulls still would have beaten the Heat, we would have said you were insane.
Morning Box Score: Bulls Beat Heat Without Rose
Morning Box Score: Bulls Hang With Miami, Can't Douse Heat
This was the marquee game on yesterday's NBA slate and, except for the Bulls losing, it didn't disappoint.
Still The Greatest Ever
Until LeBron has hoisted six Larry O'Brien trophies, there is no discussion on who is the greatest.
The Debate Over Scottie Pippen's LeBron Comments
So was what Scottie Pippen said about LeBron James last week blasphemy? Or the truth?
Playoff Box Score: Bulls Collapse Ends Season
Last night's collapse was like a swift kick in the nuts.
Playoff Box Score: Bulls Down 3-1 To Heat
The Bulls picked a fine time for their first three-game losing streak of the season, and it's put them on the brink of elimination.
Playoff Box Score: Bulls Fall Again
Once again, the Heat's defense made the Bulls fight for every shot.
Playoff Box Score: Heat "D" Evens Series
You didn't really think these Eastern Conference finals were going to be a cakewalk for the Bulls did you? After a commanding Bulls victory in the series' opener, the Miami Heat bounced back and played much like Chicago did in game one. While the Bulls hung in there for most of the game, in the end Miami's defense was too much and the Bulls fell to the Heat 85-75 on Wednesday night.
Mare Bear Says "Beat the Heat"
Mare Bear's back and she's not happy with LeBron, D. Wade or anyone else on "Mi-A-mi." Comparing Chris Bosh to an ostrich is a nice touch. In fact she's so angry that we fear she may hit the court tonight.
Playoff Box Score: Bulls Make Statement Against Heat
It did not matter that the Bulls had the NBA's best record or the top seed in the playoffs, most believed that the Miami Heat were the favorites in the Eastern Conference finals. They believed that their two superstars could dominate a game better than a complete team could work together to beat them. Last night the Bulls proved the power of teamwork as they destroyed the Heat 103-82 to take a 1-0 series lead.
The Heat Is On: Eastern Conference Finals Preview
As ESPN continues to squeeze in a montage of the Bulls’ season sweep against the Miami Heat every so often, a basketball fan living in Chicago couldn’t be anything but pumped for Sunday’s match-up. However, this basketball fan has to keep in mind some of the simple slip-ups the Bulls have had during the playoffs and their razor-thin margins in the regular season against Miami.
Afternoon Box Score: Bulls Sweep Heat
The Bulls may have been among the also-rans in the hunt for LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh during the offseason. But the money they saved in not signing any of them has proven to be put to good use in building an overall deeper team that now sits in sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference after their 87-86 win over the Heat in Miami. The Bulls 3-0 head-to-head record against the Heat is also their first regular season sweep against Miami since the 1991-92 season.
Morning Box Score: With LeBron in Lineup, Bulls Beat Heat
Last time the Miami Heat came to town, Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose had a shootout for the ages, but an asterisk was put on the Bulls win by some as LeBron James didn't suit up for the game. King James took the court last night, in a matchup of the two leading candidates for NBA MVP in himself and Rose. The result was the same, as the Bulls held the Heat to 36 second-half points and Luol Deng hit the winning trey for a 93-89 win.
Morning Box Score: Rose Outduels Wade, Hawks Fall in Shootout
Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat couldn't keep up with Derrick Rose and his Bulls, but at Carlos Boozers expense? The Blackhawks didn't fair so well as they fell to Nashville in a shootout.
Competition Heating Up as Bulls Host Miami
If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. The Miami Heat have beaten the Bulls twice in a row, and have taken seven of the last nine meetings. Does this mean the Bulls will be kicked out of their own ‘kitchen’?
Jordan On Lebron: I Wanted To Beat The Best, Not Join Them
Michael Jordan gave us a reminder of that ever-burning fire of competitive spirit this weekend when he sounded off on Lebron's decision to take his talents to South Beach. After a celebrity golf tournament broadcast on NBC, Jordan (thankfully devoid of the recent questionable 'stache) sat down to answer some questions. After talking about the evolution of the game's finances, wondering if it'd be different if his generation could play against the Kobe Bryants and Tim Duncans of today, he finally offered up this nugget of perspective on that whole Lebron James situation that you might have heard something about.
Jesse Jackson Says LeBron Treated Like A 'Runaway Slave'
While many Cleveland Cavaliers fans expressed their displeasure with NBA star LeBron James' departure for the warmer climate of Miami by burning James' merchandise in the streets, the team's majority owner Dan Gilbert instead took to the Cavs' website, where he hammered out a Comic Sans screed about how Cleveland was "cowardly betrayed" by James, and he guaranteed "that the Cleveland Cavaliers would win an NBA championship before the self-titled former 'King' wins one."
Kanye + LeBron: How Much Ego Fits In One Room?
Yup, that there is Kanye West in attendance at LeBron's ESPN-aired self-love fest in a move that seems appropriate (though, we admit, Kanye still puts out great music we enjoy; of course, like LeBron, he certainly does have his meltdowns). What, 'Ye, you couldn't convince LeBron to come to the Bulls? Still, we're just glad that the presence of two massive egos didn't rip a hole in the space-time continuum and thus causing serious injury to others in attendance.
After Missing Out on LeBron, Bulls Try To Move On
After months of speculation and weeks of building hype, LeBron James finally announced his "Decision" on an hour-long show on ESPN last night. By picking the Miami Heat, he chose to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and spurned his other suitors -- including the Bulls. Once again, the Bulls thought they could lure the top free agents to town. Once again, they came up short against the Sunshine state. This time it's LBJ, CB4 and D-Wade in Miami instead of T-Mac and Grant Hill in Orlando.
The Ego Has Landed: LeBron To Heat
The Drive. The Fumble. The Shot. Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. And now, The Decision.
LeBron To Heat?
The rumors from overnight and into the morning do not bode well for Bulls fans hanging on to hopes that LeBron James might join Carlos Boozer in Chicago. In fact, things do not bode well for Cleveland, either, and tonight's hour-long tribute to LeBron's ego (which has taken to Twitter) may also be an opportunity to watch the decimation of the collective psyche of an entire fanbase on national television. Published reports from overnight - the Cleveland Plain Dealer, NY Newsday, and, yes, ESPN - all say it's looking more and more like LeBron will join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami where the Heat will then presumably only be able to pay former members of the Washington Generals to fill out the remaining roster spots. LeBron would also be taking less cash as a deal with the Heat would be in the five-year, $90 million range if the available cap space was split equally amongst the big three but Florida's lack of state income tax would eventually make up the difference.
Boozer To Bulls
With the shot of getting Wade and Bosh gone and odds of getting LeBron getting smaller by the minute, ESPN is reporting, who else, "sources" as saying the Bulls have reached a deal with Carlos Boozer worth $80 million over five years. Of course, the money for the Bulls to sign LeBron at the max offer is still on the table and having Noah, Rose, and now Boozer on the starting five may help King James. But with Bosh and Wade already committing to Miami, conventional wisdom says it's South Beach or staying home for LeBron. We'll see.
LeBron, ESPN Reach New Synergistic Low; Bosh And Wade Reportedly Team Up In Miami
While details are still being hammered out, it looks like LeBron James will reportedly take to the airwaves on ESPN to announce where he'll sign for the 2010-2011 season (and beyond) in a one-hour special tomorrow night. It seems in line with the kind of sensationalist coverage ESPN is becoming known for. After all, this is a network that's known for televising the press conferences where 17- and 18-year-old kids announce what colleges they'll play football for. Why should the biggest basketball player on the planet be any different? That said, it seems rather egomaniacal to set aside a whole hour on a major network just to announce where you plan to play basketball and isn't exactly worthy of a player who has zero championships. Say what you will about Jordan, his borderline psychotic competitive edge, and his equally intense grudge holding, he needed only a two-word press release to announce the biggest out-of-retirement comeback of all time. And spare us the "Oh, it's for charity" angle. This is ego-driven, pure and simple.
Extra, Extra
- Attorneys for Jerry Hobbs, charged for the 2005 murders of his daughter and her friend, say new DNA evidence connects another man to the murders and clears Hobbs.
- While Gov. Quinn trims the budget, he's also handed out a number of raises to staff members.
- An intruder wearing a skeleton mask broke into the Lakeview home of an elderly couple and hit the 83-year-old man with a baseball bat; the victim has since been treated and released.
Bulls Prep For Free Agent Push
With contradicting media reports flying all over the place helter-skelter and speculation about whether or not there was a Free Agent Summit over the weekend, we're finally getting down to business in the biggest NBA free agent class ever. In just a hair over 10 hours - at 11:01 p.m. Chicago time - teams will be free to contact NBA free agents, including LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, and Dirk Nowitzki (plus several others). While no contracts can be signed until July 8, there will still be plenty of action. All eyes will be on Ohio where LeBron James will entertain reps from just about every team that has the cash to woo the (still title-less) superstar. Both the Knicks and the Nets are expected to meet with him on Thursday. As for the Bulls, there's no timetable for their visit yet, but a report from ESPN today claims the Bulls' delegation will include everyone at the top of the organization: Jerry Reinsdorf as well as coach Tom Thibodeau, general manager Gar Forman, and executive vice president John Paxson (who would do well to wear those three championship rings he won with the Bulls). In case you wanted more speculation and fuel for the rumor-mill fire, ESPN sat down Bill Simmons and Dan LeBatard with Pardon the Interruption's Tony Kornheiser and (Chicago's own) Michael Wilbon for a half-hour of discussion on potential player destinations. While somewhat entertaining, though, the show, like everything else, is pure speculation.
Summer of LeBron Hits Fever Pitch
With the NBA Champs crowned and the college players drafted, it's now on to the main event. The NBA's free agency period begins at midnight on July 1, so with the most anticipated shopping spree in NBA history approaching, the news and rumors are coming fast and furious. And it's only going to build until LeBron, Dwyane Wade et al sign their new deals.
Bulls Draft Recap: It's All About The Cap Space
As we mentioned yesterday afternoon, just prior to the start of the NBA Draft the Bulls agreed to send Kirk Hinrich and their first round pick to the Washington Wizards. The Bulls get a future second round pick in return, but the move was made explicitly to clear up even more room under the salary cap. As a result, the selection of Frenchman Kevin Seraphin doesn't mean much -- he was likely drafted at Washington's request, and will officially go to the Wizards on July 8 when the deal can be completed.
Bulls Introduce Thibodeau As Coach, Prepare for Draft
While his hiring was announced weeks ago, the Bulls formally introduced Tom Thibodeau as their new head coach on Wednesday at the Berto Center. Thibodeau comes to the Bulls after serving as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics, who came within a game of winning the NBA Championship last week. While he came up just short of claiming a part of another Larry O'Brien trophy, Thibodeau checked out the Bulls' six pack. Fans and management hope he can help add more hardware to the case.
Bulls and Thibodeau Reach Deal
While his hiring won't be officially announced until after the conclusion of the NBA FInals, the Bulls and Celtics assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau have reached a deal for him to become the Bulls next head coach, with a three year deal worth approximately $6.5 million. Perhaps Thibodeau does not have the head coaching experience many thought the Bulls desired, but he has been an NBA assistant for 18 years with seven teams (the past three with the Celtics), and plenty of experience coaching in the playoffs. Back when the Bulls hired Vinny Del Negro in 2008 Thibodeau's name regularly came up in discussions, and we thought Bulls management was foolish for not waiting to interview Thibodeau before making their decision. With the Celtics winning the NBA title that season, the Bulls chose to hire VDN before the playoffs ended rather than wait to interview the guy that was perhaps the best available candidate. Better late than never, the Bulls finally had a chance to interview Thibodeau this time around and decided to hire him after that meeting.
LeBillboard James
As if we haven't heard enough about the impending LeBron James sweepstakes (yes, we're guilty, too) two more stories are popping up. While we think it'd be nice to have LeBron playing home games at the United Center, we didn't shell out cash for a new billboard downtown calling for LeBron to come to Chicago. But one group of fans did, purchasing a billboard at Grand and LaSalle trying to woo LeBron into signing with Chicago. And according to the website, the group is looking into buying a second billboard, this one on LeBron's home turf of Akron, Ohio. Ouch. Whether this can successfully counter Cleveland's own wooing remains to be seen. But we cordially offer this suggestion: perhaps donating to LeBron's favorite charity might be a better way of wooing him? Or at least showing him some sort of spirit among fans he's looking for.
