Thirteen Chicago LGBT activists were arrested yesterday during a sit-in demonstration in Sen. Dick Durbin's office. The activists demanded passage of the LGBT job protections bill known as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and entered the office at noon with the hope of having Durbin, a co-sponsor of the bill, sign a pledge of commitment to its passage.

Honoring Harvey Milk, LGBT Activists Launch Week of Action
Answering the call from Cleve Jones and other organizers of last autumn's national LGBT march on Washington, Chicago activists have put together a busy week of actions slated to honor gay political leader Harvey Milk and continue the push for legal progress. The week culminates with a march on Saturday, which would have been Milk's 80th birthday.
Naperville Anti-Gay Org Labeled "Hate Group"
Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), a Naperville-based organization "devoted exclusively to exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda," has been officially labeled a "hate group" in the Southern Poverty Law Center's latest issue of its Intelligence Report publication.
LGBT Activists' Arrest Reintroduces Civil Disobedience to the Movement
Less than a week on the heels of his appearance at the Unite+Fight Midwest Equality Across America conference, "Don't Ask Don't Tell" activist Lt. Dan Choi made national headlines by handcuffing himself to the White House fence in an act of civil disobedience. The action, in addition to two sit-in protests at the San Francisco and D.C. offices of Nancy Pelosi, sparked a new question of what role aggressive, confrontational activism could play in LGBT communities' quest for the passage of pro-gay legislation.
Was the Gay Protest of Holy Name Cathedral Misguided?
The Gay Liberation Network, Chicago's grassroots LGBT advocacy organization, reports some 100 protesters showed up on Sunday, Valentine's Day, for a picket outside of the Holy Name Cathedral's morning services. Emboldened by Chicago Archbishop Cardinal George's recent condemnation of a gay-positive ministry as inauthentic to Catholic teachings, protesters sought to highlight the role the church has played in blocking legal victories for LGBT people.
Cardinal George Condemns Gay Catholic Ministry
It seems we spoke too soon last week when we defended Cardinal Francis George, Chicago Archbishop and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops top dog, against gay activists' call for protest of the Holy Name Cathedral Sunday.
It's National Marriage Week!
We reported last week that LGBT activists in the city are celebrating National Freedom to Marry Day next Sunday with a picket of the Holy Name Cathedral, but we left out that others in the state are celebrating a holiday with a nearly identical name but confoundingly opposite goals.
"Tranny Storm" Headed To Suburban Gay Bar
Hunters Nightclub, a suburban gay bar that gained international media attention earlier this year by instituting a door policy banning patrons whose ID photos do not match their gender presentation, is the subject of an activist demonstration planned for Fri., Oct. 23, at 11 p.m. Transgendered Chicagoans and their allies will "storm" the bar dressed in drag and gender-variant gear as a challenge to the policy they (plus the ACLU and gay media nationwide) consider discriminatory.
