Ramiro Guevara, 17, was shot and killed inside V Live, a Logan Square night club, last night after getting into an argument with another man. The man who shot Guevara fled the club after the shooting and police say no one was in custody. About 2,000 patrons were estimated to have been at the club, which admits teens but uses the wristband system to denote who is and who isn't allowed alcohol. [Tribune]

First responders were busy on the Northwest side overnight. Just before 3 a.m., a car was involved in an accident with a garbage truck, killing two and injuring two others. The crash happened in Logan Square at Fullerton and Central Park when the car broadsided the private company garbage truck. The two injured victims were taken to Illinois Masonic and Northwestern Memorial Hospital; one of the two deaths was a man inside the car but it's not known if the second death was a passenger in the car or truck. Cue the Boyz II Men, for this weekend marked the final show at Logan Square's Mini Dutch apartment gallery. After two years of using her home to showcase the work of emerging artists, Director Lucia Fabio is closing shop and heading to Los Angeles with her fiance, Robert Andrew Mueller; "family health issues" are cited as the reason. Mini D's final offering was a one-night group show featuring the couple's collection of artworks made by friends and featured artists past -- including some, like Bushwick-bound Stacie Johnson, who have their own moving trucks parked and packed. It's so hard to say goodbye -- especially when Chicago has lost so many apartment galleries in the past year. But our loss will be L.A.'s gain: Fabio plans to apply the knowledge she's gained running a small gallery to future projects.
Summer Sessions on the Square, a brand new concert series in Logan Square, makes its debut this Saturday. The concerts, which will take place on the last Saturday of every month through the end of September, will feature diverse line-ups of bands from the surrounding community, and will attempt to keep a family-friendly vibe with an early start time and a youth component among the performers.
A few months ago, the city's first covered skate park finally opened in Logan Square, underneath the Kennedy Expressway at 2430 W. Logan Blvd. The Chi-Town Daily News today runs a pretty stellar audio slideshow exploring the skate park and talking to the skaters that frequent it.
Alright, folks, I have to make this quick before my editors get back from their coffee run. Here's the deal: By now you probably know about our fifth anniversary party this Saturday night at The Whistler. I want to tell you about a great concert going on that night, but if my editors find out I plugged something other than our party, they'll make Gitmo look like a Mancow stunt. They are not fucking around on this one.
Yeah, can you believe it? This month marks Chicagoist's fifth year of keeping you abreast of the happenings in Chicago. In blog years that makes us, what? Ten? Fifteen?
It's not every band that includes science demonstrations by a U of C physicist during their release party, let alone two. But Mira Mira will do just that this Saturday, April 25 (which incidentally comes on the heels of National DNA Day). Their new album combines references to Isaac Asimov, The Time-Traveler's Wife, and the first radio broadcast with the most delicate, lushly arranged chamber pop this side of The Innocence Mission. But you don't need to focus on the wry, geeky lyrics to enjoy the group's tasty sonics. Drifting melodies carried along by piano and subtle electronics occasionally shift into darker tones, complete with shimmering guitars. It's wistful and introspective without feeling sleepy.
There’s something deliciously voyeuristic about visiting an apartment gallery like Mini Dutch. They're so intimate—furniture shoved into a corner, cats mingling with guests, looking out at life from someone else’s front window. And, of course, the art. If this sounds like your scene, take a peep at MD's finale of "Dusty Bunnyfield vs. Molotovia Cocktail: Three Openings, One Show" this Saturday.
There’s nothing better than listening to an artist / designer talk about their creative process—the inspiration, the tears, the glory. But when you add in some random crazy-ass comedy, ‘80s jams, and deliciously crafted cocktails, the result is a brilliant alternative to an uptight theory lecture—The Show ‘n Tell Show.
Usually we're giving out free tickets to cool shows -- and trust us, Thursday's Asobi Seksu show at The Empty Bottle is gonna be hot -- but this w4m Craigslist Missed Connection caught our eye:
While Chicago Police have not officially confirmed it, other authorities and several media outlets have stated that the man who holed himself up in a Logan Square apartment building yesterday evening was Tyler James Martin, a former McHenry resident accused of killing his girlfriend (Amber Kathleen Cremeens, also a former McHenry resident) in Denver earlier this week. The standoff ended when Martin committed suicide around 7:30 p.m. Authorities in the Denver area had warned local police that Martin was likely on the run and planning to return to the Chicago area to see family.

Ofelia Garcia, 59, Maria Olvera-Garcia, 35, and Linda Dirzo, 58, have pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree murder and several counts of heinous battery stemming from an acid attack against Esperanza Medina in Logan Square this summer. Police believe Garcia hatched the plan because she thought Medina was seeing her ex-husband. The trio hired a trio of teens to attack Medina; she suffered third-degree burns over 25 percent of her body and may lose sight in one eye as a result of the attack. Two of the teens have already been charged in the attack. Dirzo has already admitted to driving the teens to the scene of the attack.
We recently brought you a quick write-up of holiday shopping events that would help you get your gift-buying done in a hurry, but we've found one more happening this weekend that's worth a look. Neighborhood Artists in Logan Square (otherwise known as N.A.I.L.S.) is throwing a holiday bazaar this Saturday full of original and unique art pieces at reasonable prices, making them perfect gifts to purchase in this shoddy economy. Dozens of local artists (disclaimer: including our very own Lauri Apple!) will be on site to showcase a wide variety of pieces including paintings, jewelry, stained glass, photos and more. Christmas shop, get free munchies, support the local art scene. Can't go wrong.

The incident occurred in Logan Square on July 28 and a two other teenagers have previously been arrested and charged. The adults charged are Linda Dirzo, 58, Ofelia Garcia, 59, and Maria Olivera-Garcia, 35. Dirzo and Olivera-Garcia apparently drove the youths to the location of the attack, a charge that's confirmed by surveillance footage and that Dirzo has admitted to. The charges are Class X heinous battery and armed robbery since Medina's purse was taken in the attack.

An article in the upcoming issue of The New Republic looks at Chicago's demographics and declares "In the past three decades, Chicago has undergone changes that are routinely described as gentrification, but are in fact more complicated and more profound than the process that term suggests. A better description would be 'demographic inversion,'" meaning rich people live "near the center" and poor people live on the outskirts.
After yesterday's tragic news of a murdered 9 year-old girl, this is not the way we wanted to start the morning. Jose Callabero, a 16 year-old Logan Square boy, was shot in the head and killed in his home (located in the 2700 block of North Fairfield Ave.) early Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred around 3:45 a.m. Police have not released any more information, though there are no suspects and no known motives at this time. Damn. [Trib, S-T]
A group of partygoers is suing the Chicago Police Department for $10 million for what they say was misconduct and an illegal search of a La Familia Motorcycle Club in Logan Square. The suit claims police officers used stun grenades, held people at gun point for three hours, stole $3,000, and performed inappropriate and humiliating strip searches on female guests.
Yesterday marked the second anniversary of Weegee's Lounge, one of our favorite cocktail lounges in the city. While others like Violet Hour change out the cocktail menu with the season, Weegee's sticks to the time-honored classics and does them exceptionally. On a visit Saturday night a friend read the menu and remarked, "This should be considered one of America's true contributions to the world."
