Halloween is quickly approaching and next week brings a host of musicians through the city to get your ghoulish weekend kick-started days in advance.
Tuesday night's show at Logan Square Auditorium was like a junior high hipster sock hop infiltrated and humped to within an inch of its life by the glowstick toting rave nation. Girls and their boytoys pogoed in unison -- with uniformly plastered smiles upon their sweat drenched mugs -- to the sugary sweet beats and NSFW come-ons chirped by French pop chanteuse Yelle. We would define the room's mood as exuberant bordering on noo-kyoo-ler. In short; it was pretty awesome.
Cambridge, MA's Drug Rug is like a aural sunburst - all shiny happy singalongs and brightly-colored, 60’s-owing folky pop jams steeped in playful white kid soul. When we caught them at SXSW, these guys and gals were having more fun on the tiny day party stage - playing for a hearty group of 20 or so enthusiastic fans early in the day - than most bands had at their official night showcases. The “this is gonna be a great day!” vibe was infectious and insatiable.
With the city being overrun by holiday bar crawls, it might be difficult to walk the streets this weekend without being accosted by a drunk dude in holiday vest or run over by a Santa in a hazmat suit. Throw on your best Cosby sweater and enjoy any or all of these weekend delights....
Hey, don't forget we're running a contest to win some cool Thrill Jockey swag through tomorrow. Have you entered yet?
Thrill Jockey Records turns 15 this year, and in order to celebrate they've decided to throw themselves a couple of big-ass parties, one of which already occurred in London earlier month. However, the label has called Chicago home for over a decade, so we're expecting the 2 days of shows happening at Logan Square Auditorium on December 14 and 15 to blow London's party apart at the seams.
Is it just us, or is this one of those weeks that never stops? Looking ahead at our weekend musical calendar, we're realizing we're not going to get any sleep until we fall into a Thanksgiving dinner-induced coma next week. Oh music, we do it all for you.
The Swedes are really fucking rad, and the latest evidence comes in the form of Jens Lekman having the number one record there this week. Lekman is a pop music master in a time when the genre is struggling to identify a true star, and his presence on the can't-miss Secretly Canadian label should help to expand his appeal Stateside. It's the combination of pretty, bouncy instrumentation and Lekman's unmistakably drole vocal delivery that set...
The Fiery Furnaces have been a much discussed Chicago export over the last few years, but we admit they never really charmed us. We found their material a tad too unwieldy and impenetrable, and when they came out with that album narrated by their grandmother we were ready to just completely write them off.
The Thermals have always sounded kind of like Superchunck to us, only tighter and way more political. In our opinion, those are all good things.Their appearance at this year's Wicker Park Summerfest was a highlight amongst the live acts performing, and last year's The Body, The Blood, The Machine remains a pretty electrifying punk rock diatribe. Opening the show is Chicago's Chin Up Chin Up. We've written about them in the past, and we're always...
Rocktober is truly upon us. Usually we would avoid such cutesy phrasing for fear of falling into obvious cliché, but this year truly holds some outstanding live music coming through Chicago in the month of October. Here's a sampling of what to expect this week. Honestly, we’re beginning that suspect that both Matt & Kim and Dan Deacon secretly have apartments in Chicago, because it feels like they’re playing here every other week. If that’s...
It seems fitting that 120 Days hails from Norway since their music perfectly fits as a soundtrack for the land of the midnight sun. Long sprawling compositions built upon beds of synthesizers, guitars and droning beats bear down oppressively only to be buoyed by the melodies spiking up through dense wall of sound.
We were just going to keep our traps shut about this, but the ensuing talk we keep overhearing on street corners and other blogs has induced us to share our opinion on the latest idiocy displayed by a national magazine trying to display their knowledge of local markets.
First off, we regret to announce that Favourite Sons have pulled out of their show at The Empty Bottle tonight. Bummer, huh? Here's the official word as to why: Favourite Sons have to cancel their upcoming shows. The band is extremely disappointed to have to do so, but singer Ken Griffith has fallen ill and simply cannot continue on until this clears up - even singing has become painful due to his upper respiratory situation....
Sometimes we here at Chicagoist find ourselves neglecting things -- the litter box, our family, other people’s children; so for this month’s Convince Us we need suggestions for reading biographies. We haven’t read many biographies, either auto or otherwise, and we feel the need to see what real life is like instead of the make-'em-ups. So give us your suggestion of a biography we should read; we’ll pick one, read it, review it and post...
Not much on sale this weekend, but there are still good shows to see and changes to be made to your rock and roll lifsetyle.
The Stills return to Chicago this week, and Chicagoist wants you to be there. A brief perusal of the music articles here would reveal a definite bias toward shoegazer pop. We’ve reviewed The Stills in the past and enjoyed their run at the sub-genre thanks to their introspective songs laced with barrelhouse piano, warm horns and the twin threat of the singer/guitarist duo of Tim Fletcher and Dave Hamelin. The band last graced the city...
TGIF! Here are a few of the reasons why we're saying, "Hangover, be damned!" and getting up early tomorrow to feed the monster that is Ticketmaster. 30 Seconds to Mars Head Automatica Oct. 20, Congress Theatre, 6:00 p.m., $21, All Ages After a theatrics-filled set at Lollapalooza this summer, we need more of the Leto brothers. Luckily, they are returning with a slew of openers for an MTV $2 Bill show. Of course, we'll need...
Man Man is one of those bands that is nearly impossible to describe. Hell, their music is as confusing and dense as music gets without completely falling apart. We’ll be totally honest and admit that we probably couldn’t name a single song off their last disc. But we’ll also be totally honest and tell you these incomprehensible tunes are pure genius and that their live show is a DO NOT MISS kind of experience. Their...
Just a reminder that we’re giving away two passes for you and a friend to the Rogue Wave/Grates show this Thursday at Logan Square Auditorium.
Another month, another ticket giveaway. This time we’re giving away a pair of passes to see Rogue Wave and The Grates at Logan Square Auditorium on Thursday, September 7th at 8:30 p.m. Rogue Wave is still touring in support of their 2005 album Descended Like Vultures and will play Bumbershoot this weekend. The Oakland, CA foursome was last here in June, and were quite effusive about it. As for The Grates, we last saw them...
The place: Logan Square Auditorium. The time: last night. The event? Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Chicagoist was happy like the little school girl we are because we scored tickets to the intimate YYY show last night. Knowing that we were going to hear the songs off Show Your Bones album that will be released March 28th , we were aware that figuring out which songs were which could be a little bit of a bear. Chicagoist, after all, is not the MSM who get a copy of the CD before the release date to review, cherish, and actually have the lyrics or for that matter the names of the songs in their very own hands when they go to see the band live.
Chicagoist has been spending way too many nights at home this winter because who in their right mind would want to travel to this freezing tundra to entertain us anyway? We've been enjoying the great local bands, but national acts are starting to come back with more frequency and, boy, are we are happy.
As you travel to far-flung corners of the country for Turkey Tour 2005, a few Chicagoans are returning home to visit for the weekend. We’ve had a bit of fun at The Lovehammers’ expense here and there but they’ve got the last laugh with a sold out show tonight at Metro, an appearance at Q101’s sold-out Twisted show in December and a series of sold-out dates with INXS in the coming year. Start collecting those...
We’re still suffering from a White Sox hangover so the very thought of staying out all night to see live music has us feeling a little nauseous. But if you’re a Cubs fan or looking for some good live music with your Halloween festivities then there are plenty of options this weekend. We love a good cover song and the notion of bands masquerading as other bands is a natural for Halloween. Beat Kitchen hosts...
Chicagoist would like to make a few recommendations (and offer one warning) for ways to spend your weekend if you’re not going to be partying in expectation of a particular sporting event. Tonight you can either choose to dance your ass off or you can decide to zone out on waves of feedback but we think either way you swing you can’t go wrong. LCD Soundsystem is bringing their (well, technically we should say “his”...
There are a few questions on our lazy, yet caffeinated, mind this morning. Why is tonight’s Ted Leo show at Logan Square Auditorium NOT sold out? It seems like everyone we’ve talked to recently has said they’re planning on going and yet tickets still remain. Has he fallen off? Did we miss a Rock Snob memo? Someone please explain this contradiction! If this announcement leads to a run on tickets then we’ll be just as...
Chicagoist believes that a weekend just isn't a weekend without live music. Every city believes that they have the best live music, but we know that Chicago's music scene never takes a night off. Here are a few of our picks to make the weekend rock, roll, boogie or two-step.
Once upon a time Chicago was known as a city of bands unafraid to add a little grandiose spectacle to its rock and/or roll shows. Then we got over Styx, thank god. But in the Eighties there was a definite resurgence of groups (i.e. that whole Wax Trax contingent) combining instruments, computers and stage extravaganzas to accomplish something more human and interactive than your typical concert experience.
