Cementing Lounge Ax's Place In History

The opening of Lincoln Hall near to the old Lounge Ax space has brought up a flurry of memories we have of late nights spent watching awesome bands. It seems like we're not the only ones experiencing a renewed sense of sentimentality over the hugely influential venue once run by Julia Adams and Sue Miller (who later married a dude named Jeff Tweedy whose band played Lounge Ax pretty regularly).

Chicago native Jason Kanakis is one of those rare dudes who can honestly call himself a "career musician." He's has toured the world playing with the likes of KT Tunstall, Butch Walker, Rachael Yamagata, Aqualung, and an impressive heap of others. Now based in Los Angeles, Jason has an interesting perspective on how the Chicago music scene shapes up in comparison to the rest of the country, not to mention some pretty weird stories about life on the road. Fresh off a tour with Brett Dennen, Chicagoist caught up with Jason for a quick chat about touring, Chicago's music community, and Singapore's transvestite prostitutes.

We were just going to keep our traps shut about this, but the ensuing talk we keep overhearing on street corners and other blogs has induced us to share our opinion on the latest idiocy displayed by a national magazine trying to display their knowledge of local markets.

Today’s Daily Northwestern delves a bit into the man, the myth and the poetry of Chicago’s own Thax Douglas. Known to almost everyone who’s ever set foot in a Chicago rock club, Thax can be found reading his poetry before the start of shows throughout the city. The piece explores how Thax’s poetry readings took off at the dearly departed Lounge Ax, though Thax himself said in an interview at Glorious Noise that the first...

Gary "Elvis" Schepers is one of those cogs in Chicago's music scene that works tirelessly and is never noticed. Gary plays the rock tuba with Devil In A Woodpile and also works as the sound guy at many venues and for a veritable who's who of the last 20 years. He worked with The Service before they reincarnated into the New Duncan Imperials, Material Issue and Uncle Tupelo and at Lounge Ax, Empty Bottle, the...

If you have an e-mail account and you’ve ever stepped foot inside a Chicago rock club, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the trouble with Double Door. Dero’s got the full story in the Sun-Times and the e-mail being passed around is posted at Double Door’s site. Essentially, Double Door is in a dispute with its landlord over the lease. DD is saying that they have the right to exercise an option to extend their current lease while the landlord is saying that DD did not give proper notice to do so. Therefore, the landlord is seeking to increase the rent that DD is charged (up from its current $9 per square foot to a reported $38 per square foot) or find another tenant if they’re unable to pay.

When Chicagoist travels around this great country of ours, we brag about being from The City That Works. In response, people usually respond with “Oh! Michael Jordan!” or make that annoying rat-a-tat-tat machine gun sound. Gangsters, ha ha! It’s funny because it’s...actually, it’s not funny at all. Especially since the city’s got so much more to offer like, say, a kickass live music scene? Anyone? Seems we’re not the only ones tired of faux machine...

Though it’s likely that a new band is formed at least every week here after some kid hears his or her first Ramones or Grandmaster Flash record, there are also too many that succumb to the pressures of being a working band, night in and night out. And so it is with Woolworthy, who play their final show tomorrow night at Double Door after almost ten years of power-pop goodness. Having played their first show...
