Angelo Out as Bears GM

Angelo Out as Bears GM

Angelo, who addressed rumors of his job status by saying he was "whistling 'Dixie'," leaves after 11 years with a 95-81 record, four division titles, an NFC championship and a loss in Super Bowl XLI, will be better remembered for his poor drafting and talent evaluation skills. more ›

Bears Extend Smith's Contract

Bears Extend Smith's Contract

The Bears may have fell short of a Super Bowl, but for Jerry Angelo, the team's turnaround this season was enough to extend Lovie Smith's contract through 2013. Angelo had already said an extension of Smith's contract was in the works. The extension also puts Smith on the same timetable as Angelo and team President Ted Phillips; all their contracts will now expire at the same time. more ›

Packers' Playoff Berth Lies in Bears' Hands

It's one of Chicago's most heated rivalries and they have a playoff spot in the bag. So what do they have to play for? How about sending Green Bay packing and out of the playoffs? more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Slip Past Lions

You'd think that three-quarters of the way through the season, we'd finally have a grasp on this Bears team. But no sooner had they convinced the last of the doubters they're for real, they needed the benefit of another controversial call in order to slip past the lowly Detroit Lions 24-20 on Sunday. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Put Down Vick, Eagles

It's taken better than two-thirds of the season, but we're finally buying into this Bears team. In a battle of 7-3 NFC division leaders, the Bears dominated for most of the afternoon and ended up beating the hot Philadelphia Eagles 31-26 at Soldier Field. more ›

Cutler "In Good Shape," O-Line Questions Remain

Cutler "In Good Shape," O-Line Questions Remain

It's amazing to read this town's sportswriters and hear the sports radio blowhards turn on a dime from praising the "stay the course" leadership of Bears head coach Lovie Smith during a 3-0 start, to crucifying Smith and his coaching staff for not making the necessary adjustments to protect Jay Cutler from the concussion he ultimately received Sunday night against the New York Giants. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Beat Cowboys

After watching the Bears' first possession in Sunday's game, it looked like they were going to get killed... and quarterback Jay Cutler might literally lose his life (or least a few limbs) the way the Dallas defense kept drilling him into the turf. But Mike Martz adjusted his offensive schemes and the Bears ended up beating the Cowboys 27-20 in Dallas to open the season 2-0. more ›

Lovie On Defensive

Lovie On Defensive

A day after the Bears won their season opener despite a questionable call by refs and a questionable call by Bears' head coach Lovie Smith, Smith was on the defensive. On that decision to go for the touchdown on fourth down? Lovie stood by his call: "Still feel good about it. I went for it because I thought we could get it. We needed a touchdown. To keep it close, like it ended up being there at the end, one big play could really have bad results for us. So I felt good about it going for it then, and I feel good about it now. I would do the same thing again." Lovie also spoke on the controversial rule that took what looked to be a sure touchdown away from Detroit on the final drive: "We all agreed on those rules. We've been on the other side of that rule before. The officials make calls based on (the rule), cut and dry. That is the rule we have in place. All the rules we have in place right now are good." Lovie, of course, is thanking his lucky stars. And even though the Bears started out the season with a win, that's not keeping others from already speculating he won't make it to the end of the year. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Find Way To Beat Lions 19-14

The 2010 Chicago Bears are awful, and Lovie Smith needs to be fired. There is no other way to deal with the debacle we saw at Soldier Field on Sunday. No matter that the Bears managed a 19-14 win when Jay Cutler connected with Matt Forte for a 28-yard touchdown inside of two minutes and a Calvin Johnson touchdown for the Lions was controversially waved off in the final 30 seconds. If there is such thing as a moral victories, this was the definition of moral defeat. The Bears played at home against a Detroit Lions team who had lost 20 straight road games. A Lions team that had won two games in the past two seasons. A team that lost their starting QB to injury just before halftime. And yet the Bears needed a miracle finish to win the game. more ›

Bear Down: Previewing The 2010 Chicago Bears

Bear Down: Previewing The 2010 Chicago Bears

This week's crisp morning air is a gentle reminder that football season is once more upon us. With the Bears opener just days away, just how will our team do in 2010? This is a make or break year for many in the organization -- most notably head coach Lovie Smith. While many on his coaching staff lost their jobs after last season's 7-9 campaign, Smith was retained. Another year without making the playoffs and he'll be looking for work. So, too, will GM Jerry Angelo after bringing the likes of Julius Peppers and Jay Cutler to the Bears in recent off-seasons. Despite a miserly reputation, the Bears have spent lavishly on players yet have not made the postseason since their Super Bowl XLI appearance. more ›

O-Noes! Bears List of Coordinator Candidates Shrinking

O-Noes! Bears List of Coordinator Candidates Shrinking

With vacancies at both offensive and defensive coordinator, the Bears' brass has a lot of work to do to retool coach Lovie Smith's staff. Unfortunately for Lovie and his long term job prospects in Chicago, many of the top candidates have been taken out of consideration. USC's offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates had been considered the leading candidate of late, but he opted to follow boss Pete Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks and canceled an interview scheduled for Tuesday. What about Green Bay QB coach Tom Clements? Nope, he won't be interviewing for the job either after the Packers refused the Bears' request. While lobbying for the Bears job before it was even available, former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, became the Kansas City Chief's offensive coordinator last week before even meeting with Chicago. more ›

Lovie Stays: The Fall-Out From Halas Hall

Lovie Stays: The Fall-Out From Halas Hall

We're not sure what it costs to run a full-page ad in the Trib or Sun-Times, but apparently it's less than the $11 million balance on Lovie Smith's contract because Bears management decided to retain their beleaguered head coach as they officially announced during a press conference at Halas Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The same coach who led the team to a season poor enough that management felt compelled to apologize to fans in print this week. While Lovie remains as head coach, most of his offensive staff got their walking papers on Tuesday. As widely expected, offensive coordinator Ron Turner was the primary fall guy for the Bears' season. Offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton, tight ends coach Rob Boras, assistant o-line coach Luke Butkus and assistant wide receivers coach Charles London also got the ax. Given that the Bears have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons after appearing in Super Bowl XLI, David Haugh was correct to in his assessment that "[t]his wasn't a housecleaning at Halas Hall. This was light dusting." more ›

Grin and Bear It: Lovie Staying, Turner Gone (UPDATED)

Grin and Bear It: Lovie Staying, Turner Gone (UPDATED)

It's not the news most Bears fans wanted to hear today. The Chicago Bears are scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon at 2 p.m. to announce a shake up in the coaching staff but one of those departing will not be head coach Lovie Smith, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter. So we guess the buy-out was too rich for the McCaskeys' blood? Instead, it looks like Lovie will remain in charge but look for a major shake-up amongst the assistants; tight ends coach Rob Boras has already been fired according to the ESPN report. Meanwhile, the Tribune reports a league source as saying the news is equally grim for offensive coordinator Ron Turner who has also been fired. Also getting the boot were offensive line coach Harry Hiestand and quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton. more ›

Bears Apologize For Season Via Ad

Bears Apologize For Season Via Ad

With the Bears done for the season at 7-9 and missing the playoffs for a third straight year, the team took out a full page ad in today's Tribune and Sun-Times apologizing to fans for their underachievement. Meanwhile, fans await actions, not words. And while Coach Lovie Smith didn't appear before the media today as he usually does the day after a game, he's still owed $11 million over the next two years which means it might cost the Bears a pretty penny to fire him. On the other hand, team GM Jerry Angelo promised money would not be a factor in the decision to fire or retain Smith. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Close Out Season Win 37-23 Win

When this season began, we figured we'd be spending this evening looking forward to the Bears' playoff opponent. Instead, the Bears prevailed over the Detroit Lions 37-23 in a meaningless game to wrap up a disappointing 7-9 campaign before heading home for the winter. more ›

Coach Vinny Twists In The Wind

Coach Vinny Twists In The Wind

As reports surfaced yesterday that Coach Vinny was on the way out - just as soon as the Bulls' front office got its act together to find a replacement - now comes the standard silence from management. For his part, Del Negro is still saying all the right coach things, though with a hint of "Dead Man Walking." more ›

Bears Fan Plan "Protest" For Tonight

Not content to just spend money on a billboard, the folks of BearFansUnited are asking fans attending tonight's Bears-Vikings game to participate in a "walk-in," i.e., staying out of their seats until after kickoff. BFU head Andrew Gasser told NBC 5, “That way, when ESPN’s cameras pan across the stadium, it’ll look like no one is there." Gasser told NBC 5 he was inspired by walk outs held by Detroit Lions fans when they were attempting to rid themselves of Matt Millen. Okay, but to compare the current Bears situation to the train wreck that is the Detroit Lions franchise seems an overstatement to put it mildly. If coach Lovie Smith is fired after the season, one coach we know won't be part of talks is Mike Shanahan. more ›

Bears Fans Erect Billboard Asking for Firing of Lovie Smith

Bears Fans Erect Billboard Asking for Firing of Lovie Smith

There are websites, Facebook and Yelp pages, and blog posts and comments by the thousands calling for the head of Bears' coach Lovie Smith, but one group of fans is going a bit further by putting up a billboard with a direct message to the Bears owners, the McCaskey family. more ›

Morning Box Score: Ravens Dispatch Hapless Bears

7.9. It's not today's high temperature, nor is it the amount of lines you will read before we mention Lovie Smith's job security. 7.9 was actually Cutler's passer rating in the Bears' 31-7 losing "effort" against the Ravens yesterday, begging the question, So what's the deal with Lovie? more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Sacked By Pack

Upon his introduction as Bears head coach back in January 2004, Lovie Smith said his two goals for the Bears were to win a Super Bowl and beat the Packers. In his first season at the helm, they went 5-11 but he beat Green Bay in his second game and thus ingratiated himself quickly into the hearts of Bears fans. In every subsequent season, Lovie Smith has managed to win at least one game against the rival Packers... until now. The Bears, who lost to the Packers in week 1, found themselves on the short end of a 21-14 game, and dropped the season series for the first time under Smith. Perhaps that's yet another sign it's time for a change on the sidelines for the Bears. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Lose to Favre Yet Again

We don't even know why we continue to watch this train wreck. The Bears keep looking worse and worse as their season progresses, dropping to 4-7 after losing to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings 36-10 on Sunday. The Vikings' offense obliterated the Bears bumbling defense, with the ageless Favre completing 32 of 48 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns; the Vikings racked up 537 yards of total offense. Five different receivers caught at least five passes from Favre, led by rookie Percy Harvin's first 100 yard game on six receptions. With the defensive game plan focused on Adrian Peterson, the Bears "held" the star running back to 85 yards rushing, and the Vikings still managed 159 yards on the ground. more ›

Martz Denies Bears Rumors

Martz Denies Bears Rumors

According to Mike Martz, there will be no "Greatest Show On Turf" at Soldier Field. With the Bears mired in a three-game losing streak (and losers in five of their last six games), rumors have swirled that both head coach Lovie Smith and GM Jerry Angelo are on the way out, rumors the team has denied. Another rumor has offensive coach Martz coming to town, pushing out Ron Turner. Martz was the architect behind the '99 Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams' explosive offense and the chance to work with Cutler would seem irresistible for Bears fans. Or not, as some fans might also remember Martz as the offensive coordinator who more recently struggled mightily in Detroit. more ›
