There's something remarkably big about M83. The '80s-tinged shoegazers, led by Anthony Gonzalez, have for the last ten years captured a certain intergalactic essence, which is no surprise given the fact that the band is named after a galaxy 15 million light-years away. Such is the aesthetic of M83's sound: at once futuristic and nostalgic, alienating and intimate, elated and melancholic, M83's catalog feels like space traveling with a lover, armed with a complicated past and unbridled optimism for the future. Thursday's show at Lincoln Hall sent that feeling into hyperdrive.

Tokyo Police Club is remembering the first decade of the Aughts by recording a new cover daily to correspond with each year. Today's cover lines up with 2008 as the band tackles M83's sublime "Kim & Jessie" and they do it up right. It's slightly sloppy but that meshes well to offset the pristine perfection of the source material and allows Tokyo Police Club to stake their own claim to the tune.
Pitchfork Closes With A Flourish
Day 3 of the 2009 Pitchfork Music Fest featured a full slate of bands we planned on catching and we managed to catch most of it with all roads leading to the big headlining set by The Flaming Lips, whose lighting rig was already set up on stage. We were welcomed into a warm, sunny Union Park by the spazzy, buzzy electro-rock of The Mae Shi who set the energy level to 11 and didn't relent for the duration of their set which included a brief switch to hip-hop courtesy of Yea Big + Kid Static. The highlight of the band's performance didn't come from the band itself but rather those guests who called on Pitchfork to review their new record, saying, "Give it a 4, I don't give a shit."
Pitchfork Music Festival Adds To Line-Up, Ups The Ante
The Pitchfork Music Festival announced the addition of Matt and Kim, Charles Hamilton, Fucked Up, Wavves, The Duchess and the Duke, M83, Black Lips, and The Very Best to this year's line-up. If you haven't grabbed your multi-day passes we suggest you do so now since this line-up is proving to be a doozy.
'80s Indie-pop? Calling M83 and School Of Seven Bells
O.K., you already know we love the new M83 album. How could you not? So we were excited to hear they're playing Bottom Lounge tonight since we missed them last time they were in town. Once we learned School Of Seven Bells was opening we couldn't wait to rush home and get dressed up in our finest 1988 attire to greet their distinctly 4AD sonic delivery.
M83 Slips Deliciously Back Into the '80s
M83 (a.k.a. Anthony Gonzalez) albums have tended toward being sweepingly atmospheric, with rumbling songs that stretch out and cover the landscape with warm gooey tones. The new album Saturdays=Youth starts off with a snippet that would lead the listener to believe this pattern would continue to hold true, until the deliciously cold and shimmering "Kim & Jessie" kicks in like the opening credits of a John Hughes film.
