Maggie Daley Hospitalized This Morning

Maggie Daley Hospitalized This Morning

Early this morning, Chicago's first lady Maggie Daley was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, her doctor Dr. Steven Rosen, and Mayor Richard Daley's spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard told the Chicago Tribune. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2002, Daley had her right leg reinforced with a metal plate during surgery last year. Discomfort in the same leg early this morning caused her to be admitted to the hospital. According to Heard, Mayor Daley has canceled his public schedule for the rest of the day and is with his wife at the hospital. "They've conducted some tests, and are waiting for the results," Heard said to the Tribune. more ›

Maggie Daley Thanks Chicago

Maggie Daley Thanks Chicago

If you haven't heard already, Mayor Daley isn't seeking re-election after 21 years in office and has the whole city up in arms and talking about what this means for Chicago (and who the next big boss could be). Although some may have seen Daley's retirement coming, it came as a shock and surprise to many to think that the Daley era of politics would be over. Maggie Daley, Chicago's First Lady, spoke up about her husband's decision not to run for mayor and talked about the future plans for the mayor and for herself yesterday. Citing that it took Mayor Daley "months" to come to a decision about what to do, Maggie Daley also said that she encouraged her husband to do what he thought was best for him:

"You know, it was just a matter of 'What do you think is best for you?' That simple," Maggie Daley said she told the mayor before he announced his decision last Tuesday.
Maggie Daley, rarely a presence in the press, also indicated that she would be continuing her philanthropic work connected to After School Matters even after Mayor Daley steps down from office. Mrs. Daley used her time with the press to discuss her husband's tenure as mayor (and deflected questions about her battle with cancer). Mrs. Daley indicated that she was very proud of Mayor Daley's accomplishments while in office, and made Chicago residents blush by praising their hospitality: more ›

Maggie Daley Back Home

Chicago's First Lady, Maggie Daley, is back at home and resting comfortably after yesterday's unexpected trip to the hospital. Daley was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital suffering from "flu-like symptoms" that her doctor said may be an adverse reaction to current treatment for cancer. Maggie was first diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2002 and underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her right breast in 2006. In December, it was announced she was undergoing a new round of treatment for a cancerous bone lesion. more ›

Maggie Daley Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Maggie Daley Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Maggie Daley, wife of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, is undergoing a new round of treatment for a cancerous lesion on her lower right leg which has left her confined to a wheelchair for the time being. Maggie was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2002 and underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her right breast in 2006. Speaking earlier today at the opening of Chicago's French Market, Mayor Daley said, “Like anything else, there are setbacks in life. Anytime you have a health issue, you have setbacks, especially in cancer. Maggie has been a fighter on this issue, and Dr. Steve Rosen and all the other doctors and nurses have done a tremendous job." While we've certainly been critical of the mayor on this site, we wish Maggie - and all cancer patients, for that matter - nothing but the best in her treatment. more ›

Did Mayor Daley Travel on a Private Jet?

According to a report by CBS News on Monday, Mayor Richard Daley traveled to Singapore in 2006 on a $13 million jet owned by a non-profit student loan organization, Educap gave millions of dollars to the Academy of Achievement, which paid the mayor's wife Maggie $100,000 in 2006 and $50,000 in 2007 to be a "site consultant", scouting out locations to hold annual conferences for outstanding students. According to the CBS News report, "records show [Educap CEO Catherine] Reynolds took Chicago's Daley and his wife on 58 flights including ones to Turkey, Asia and Sweden." Educap is under investigation by the IRS and Congress for "alleged abuse of its tax-exempt status because it charges high interest on charitable student loans, and provides lavish perks with millions in compensation for Reynolds and her husband." more ›
