We had books on magic, magic sets, Betamax tapes offering up the secrets of the craft ... but we never saw this. Had we, we might have kept up with the sleight of hand!
The Morning After: Bulls Roughed Up
The Bulls' free-fall continues and now - adding injury to insult - they may be without star Derrick Rose for a spell. The Orlando Magic had little trouble handing the Bulls their sixth-straight loss 111-82. With Luol Deng and Joakim Noah already out with injuries, Derrick Rose hurt his left wrist late in the first quarter after a collision with Orlando's Dwight Howard; he'll have an MRI on the wrist today to determine how serious the injury is. With their top three players hurt, then, James Johnson led the Bulls with 13 points, though they didn't put up much of a fight, down 65-33 at the half. The Bulls try to regroup tonight in Miami (6:30 p.m., WGN).
The Morning After: Bulls Streak Snapped
The Bulls are heading into the All-Star Break on a losing note after being beaten down by the Orlando Magic 107-87. The Magic held an early 9-6 lead and then exploded to take a 41-17 lead to end the first quarter. Yes, 41-17 after the first quarter. The Bulls did manage to make up a but of ground but never got back into the game. Luol Deng led the team with 23 points while Ty Thomas scored 16 off the bench. Derrick Rose only managed 3 points in the opening minutes before leaving the game with a bruised right hip; he did not return and there's no official word on the extent of his injury but it has certainly put his All-Star weekend participation in doubt. The Bulls now get a nice, long break before returning to action next Tuesday against the Kincks (7 p.m., WGN).
Morning Box Score
Don't look now but the Bulls have won four in a row after dusting Orland 101-93 last night. Derrick Rose led the Bulls with a solid 30-6-7, three other Bulls starters - Deng (14), Noah (10), and Hinrich (11) - scored in double figures and John Salmons scored 15 off the bench. The Bulls found themselves down by eight halfway through the second but went on a 15-2 run to the end the half up by four and started the second half on an 11-2 run to extend the lead. A 10-0 Orlando run in the fourth cut the lead to 5 and the Magic found themselves within 3 with less than 30 seconds to go but the Bulls hit 5 of 6 free throws to put the game away. Also put away - for now? Talk of Coach Vinny being canned. But, rest assured, we'll hear something at the next rough patch for the team. But the Bulls hope to avoid that when they welcome the OKC Thunder tomorrow night (7 p.m., CSN).
Morning Box Score: Magic Tip Bulls
The Chicago Bulls have had a hot start to the preseason but they were downed last night by the defending Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic by a 101-98 final. John Salmons led all scorers, putting up 19 points in the losing effort; Kirk Hinrich added 18 and Brad Miller tacked on 15 off the bench. With almost a minute-and-a-half left to play, the Bulls were up by three over the Magic - who remain undefeated in the preseason - but Orlando rattled off a 7-0 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish, hitting key free throws to keep the Bulls at bay. With a 5-2 preseason record, the Bulls have one preseason game left - this Friday at home against the Wizards (7 p.m., CSN) - before opening their 2009-2010 regular season on October 29.
Morning Box Score: Magic Rout Bulls
Scoring 38 first half points won't cut it against most NBA teams and it certainly won't cut it against the Orlando Magic. That's all the Bulls could muster and despite outscoring the Magic 34-25 in the fourth quarter, the Bulls still fell by 19, 113-94. Joakim Noah led the Bulls with 19 points off the bench and Ben Gordon added 18. Gordon also had the understatement of the night when he said, "I think we can play a lot better than we're playing right now."

The Magician's Law
covers his transformation from tying rope tricks to tying neckties (he purposefully never learned), and how to become a lawyer without giving away his soul. Peppered with fake rejection letters informing Lax the board had a good laugh at his application, and real legal jargon that will make your head spin, Lax weaves a funny, meandering story of an underachiever in an overachiever's world.
