Morning Box Score

The Cubs got a great start out of Ryan Dempster who worked a little bit for a 2-0 win over the Marlins. More than once did Dempster allow multiple runners on base but each time he was able to work out of the jam. And, of course, Carlos Marmol is never boring in relief and this time was no different, allowing the first two batters on the inning on base before getting the final three outs to the game with a little assistance from Starlin Castro who made a terrific catch. RBI doubles by Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto gave the Cubs the offense they needed for the win as the team's winning streak hit four. They'll try to extend that to five games later tonight (6:10 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Morning After: Blackhawks Take Commanding Lead

The Chicago Blackhawks now have a commanding 3-0 lead over the San Jose Sharks in their Western Conference finals series after coming away with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory last night at the United Center. After a scoreless first period, the Sharks drew first blood on a power play goal early in the second period. But just moments later, Patrick Sharp answered with a power play goal of his own to tie the game up at 1-1. The game was tied 1-1 going into the second half of the third period when Dave Bolland put the 'Hawks up 2-1, scoring on a break-away. But San Jose would answer minutes later, tying the game at 2-2, which is how the game was when the clock hit zero, sending it to overtime. And at the 12:24 mark of overtime, Dustin Byfuglien netted the dramatic game-winner. more ›

Williams Strikes Out Again

Williams Strikes Out Again

Chicagoist certainly doesn't envy White Sox GM Kenny Williams and the difficult task he has to rebuild a team that lost 90 games in 2007. On Tuesday, he once again was overmatched by the opposition and missed the ball on potential help for his club. Recent reports suggested that the Sox were close to landing third baseman Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins — a player that Ozzie Guillen referred to as his "fourth son."... more ›

Cubs Clinch Central

Cubs Clinch Central

The Cubs have clinched the NL Central crown -- and with two games to spare! Following a three game sweep at the hands of the Florida Marlins, things were looking sketchy, but the Brewers kept on losing, too. When the Cubs returned to the win column in Cincinnati on Friday night, and Milwaukee lost yet again, the final two games were subtracted from the magic number and the Cubs earned a berth in the postseason... more ›

Swept Away

Swept Away

This is not a fun time to be a baseball fan in Chicago. Whether a White Sox or Cubs fan, you no doubt have that sinking feeling about your team's prospects for the postseason after they were swept this week. The Cubs lost 9-0 to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday, following a day full of meetings. The players held one. So did management. Didn't help, at least on Wednesday. The players felt they needed to... more ›

Who'll Be the Cubs' Next Manager?

Who'll Be the Cubs' Next Manager?

With all the potential candidates now known, the Cubs' list to fill Dusty Baker's vacancy seems to be: Lou Piniella, Joe Girardi, Bob Brenley and maybe even Buck Showalter -- the last of the managerial casualties. Braves third base coach Fredi Gonzalez had been on early wish lists, but the Florida Marlins snatched him up within hours of dumping Girardi. more ›

White Sox Sweep Red Sox, Then Wait

White Sox Sweep Red Sox, Then Wait

While our Bean Town siblings warned us about counting our eggs before they hatched, we spent the weekend grilling up some nice chicken dinners in the Chicagoist HQ as the White Sox beat the Red Sox 5-3 Friday afternoon, sweeping the American League Divisional Series. The Red Sox reign is over, only a season after snapping their 86-year curse. A new champion will be crowned. Could it be the White Sox, ending our own... more ›
