Whether you celebrate today as Valentine's Day, or Singles Awareness Day, we hope you'll keep in mind this One Truth about us here at Chicagoist: everything we do, we do it for you.
Valentine's Day Diversion: Everything I Do
Humpday Afternoon Diversion: Don Draper Pitches Facebook
Today's diversion is absolutely brilliant.
Weekend Diversion: "Harry Potter" Meets "Home Alone"
We thought we'd share this mashup of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer audio, set to clips from Home Alone and Home Alone 2.
Tuesday Afternoon Diversion: Mean Disney Girls
Tony Peregrin is on a roll today. First he previews the amazing exhibit at the Chicago History Museum on the history of gays in Chicago and now his Facebook page gives us today's diversion, in which Mean girls is reimagined with Disney animated princesses. YOU GO, GLEN COCO!!
Tuesday Afternoon Diversion: Carol Moseley Braun - The Remix
Well, that was slower than expected. The Carol Moseley Braun "strung out on crack" remixes are starting to trickle in. This is an early candidate for best of the lot, given its splicing of an embarrassed Jerry Springer and the dubbing of the crowd chanting "Jer-ry! Jer-ry!" at the end.
Humpday Afternoon Diversion: "Tron" + Chaplin = Awesome
Maybe you're waiting on pins and needles for the release of Tron: Legacy (we aren't), but this is still pretty cool. Rob clued us in to this mashup of Tron with the Charlie Chaplin classic Modern Times. We'd sit through the man in the machine sequence for hours.
Google Helping Track Census Responses
The U.S. Census Bureau is making a big push for folks to fill out those Census forms sent out recently. Ads with celebrities, multiple mentions during the television broadcasts of the NCAA basketball tournament, etc. Anything they can do to boost the 72 percent participation rate of the 2000 Census. Now they've enlisted the help of Google to produce interactive maps that help keep track of participation rates. Overall, national participation is currently at 16 percent with Montana being the highest participating state so far at 33 percent. Where do both our city and state come in? So far, Illinois holds a 21 percent participation rate while the city of Chicago's participation rate is low at 12 percent. Using the map tool, users can zoom in even further to get detailed neighborhood participation information.
Thursday Afternoon Diversion: Mash Ups and A Capella
Okay, so the first video is six months old, but it's still badass. A mash-up of the top 25 songs of 2008? Girl Talk, eat your heart out. And after the jump, an A Capella version of one of our favorite songs so far this year performed by Acquire A Cappella of UC Santa Cruz (language NSFW, though, so keep the volume low).
