Loyola Hospital Claims Chicago Area's First 2011 Birth

Although we're only one day into the New Year, Loyola Hospital in Maywood is already claiming that the Chicago area's first baby of 2011 was born there just one second after midnight. Baby Alejandra Maya Arroyo weighed in at 5 pounds, 11 ounces and is 18 inches long, according to a press release via the Chicago Sun-Times. She was born to parents Rosalinda Arroyo, 35, and Alejandro Arroyo, 40, a couple from west suburban Cicero that have been married for 19 years. more ›

Teen Struck and Dragged By Car In Galewood Dies

On Monday, Nakella Harper, 18, was due to start her first day at Triton Community College in River Grove, but her life was unfortunately cut short when she was hit by a car and dragged late Saturday in the Galewood neighborhood. Harper, of the 1000 block of Cernan Drive in Bellwood, was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. on Saturday at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. more ›

We don't know about you, but our main priorities when choosing a day care center for our kids are that it's clean, the caregivers are good with children, and most importantly, that it doesn't also contain a pit bull fighting ring. So a home day care in Maywood definitely wouldn't have made our short list after the Cook County Sheriff raided it, breaking up an alleged dog fighting operation and rescuing 9 dogs, all of which needed medical attention. Some of the dogs were in horrific condition -- Sheriff Tom Dart told the press that they "found a dog with its eye ripped out, a dog with a leg twisted backward and a dog with its lower extremities nearly ripped off its body," and another dog that appeared to have very recently been in a fight and "its chest... was shredded and its penis was bitten almost completely off." more ›

Three Maywood Teens Killed, Fourth Wounded In Weekend Shooting

Three Maywood teens were killed and a fourth injured early Saturday morning when the car they were in was riddled with bullets. Now, two days after the shooting, the families and police are left asking, "Why?" Devin Stokes (left), Kent Flowers Jr. (center), and Oscar Pritchett (right), all 18-years old, were killed in the shooting. A fourth boy remains in critical condition, though media outlets are not identifying him because he is considered a witness. The shooting happened in the 1900 block of Harrison Street, outside of Flowers' home shortly after midnight early Saturday morning. more ›
