<strike>It's Gotta</strike> It Can't Be The Shoes

He hasn't even played a game yet at his new school and already Marcus Jordan, son of Michael, is grabbing headlines. If Marcus is flying high in Nikes like his father any time soon, it might be at a big cost to his school - the University of Central Florida - who has with a deal with one of the shoemaker's biggest competitors. UCF seems to have painted itself in a corner by promising Jordan he could don his father's line of sneakers while at the same time having an exclusive deal with Adidas (valued at around $2 million) that dictates all players, coach, and staff wear Adidas equipment and apparel, a pretty common-place deal among college athletic programs these days. And, as we know, Nike has a firm grasp on the rights to all things Jordan.

Last night, Michael Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Below is Part 1 of his speech and parts 2 and 3 are after the jump.

Yesterday, we mentioned our local papers honoring Michael Jordan on his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame (being televised this afternoon by ESPN, 5:30 p.m.) along with other greats John Stockton, David Robinson, Vivian Stringer, and Jerry Sloan. But, for Chicago, it's mostly about His Royal Airness. And ESPN has the perfect Friday distraction for you in the form of this collection of 23 videos celebrating his biggest moments [via GB].

Papers Commemorate Jordan's HOF Entrance

In celebration of Michael Jordan's induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame tomorrow, both the Tribune and Sun-Times have created an extensive special Michael Jordan Tributes. Both feature a collection of articles, columns, photos, and videos that trace MJ's life from his childhood, to his standout college career, to his illustrious run in the NBA, his detours for the Olympics and minor league baseball, as well as life in the executive suite. So go ahead and waste your workday reminiscing about the best basketball player we're likely to ever see, as well as the one who brought six championships to town.

MJ Is NBA's Best Ever

On Friday, Michael Jordan finally assumes his rightful place in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Leading up to his enshrinement, the Trib asks what we can only assume is a rhetorical question, "Is MJ the best ever?" Sure, we may be a teeny bit biased here in Chicago. But we still pick MJ over the likes of Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Oscar Robertson. So would former Bulls assistant coach Johnny Bach, "I saw Oscar Robertson and Russell play. I coached against Wilt (in college). The idolatry Michael experienced would send anybody else off spinning. But he continued to produce."

Remember that cool tribute to Michael Jordan using only Gatorade bottles? Here's a great video that takes a behind the scene's look at the making of it. [via]

Everyone remembers the legendary Jordan vs Bird video game. But do you remember His Royal Airness's other video game? If you didn't, we can't blame you. But our friends over at Tremendous Upside Potential recently dug up and revisited Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City (1994, Super Nintendo, and yes, it's real). The objective: to rescue other basketball players who have been taking captive by Maximus Cranium. The weapon: basketballs. The enemies: zombies. There's nothing left we should have to say.

Gatorade Pays Bottle-Mural Tribute To Jordan

The above picture is of 19,000 Gatorade bottles used to create a mosaic for an upcoming Gatorade commercial honoring Michael Jordan. The location is basketball court somewhere on the South Side. Looks pretty cool, no? You can read more about it over at Ball Don't Lie, one of the Yahoo! Sports blogs. [via Gapers Block].

At the risk of going overboard on the whole Michael Jackson thing, we had to share one more video from the vaults: the video for "Jam" which paired Jackson with Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan. Below is a behind-the-scenes featurette which includes the awkward "casually shooting hoops" scene. After the jump, check out the video in its entirety.

Jeff Jordan Ditches Hoops For Books

In a sorta surprising - not to mention refreshing - announcement, Jeff Jordan, son of Michael Jordan, has announced his intentions to leave the University of Illinois men's basketball team to focus on academics. No, really. In a statement, Jordan the Younger said, "I loved playing for the Fighting Illini and appreciate the support I was given by my teammates, coaches and the great fans here. But I have come to the point where I‚m ready to focus on life after basketball. I will concentrate on earning my degree from the University of Illinois and the opportunities that await upon graduating." An upcoming junior, Jordan figured to see more minutes if he had stayed on. Of course, there's still another Jordan to carry the basketball mantle should he choose: son Marcus has committed to the University of Central Florida. [Sun-Times]

Over the last week, Chicago 2016 has released a pair of 30-second PR videos utilizing Michael Jordan to help sell the city's bid. No word if they had to digitally remove the Nike logo. [via ABC7]

Jordan Visits Blackhawks, Wears What Nike Lets Him

Like many around the city, we thought it was a nice gesture to see basketball legend Michael Jordan pay a visit to the United Center Friday night to root on the Blackhawks. Interestingly enough, though, it seems that the Blackhawks jersey he's wearing is a custom-made one: team officials sewed a red patch over the Reebok logo. It's not really clear whether Jordan is contractually forbidden from displaying another logo or if it's a personal choice on his part. It's certainly not the first time this has happened. And not that we're surprised either. And, sure, maybe it's a minute detail to be focused on, but as several other blogs that have picked up this story have already said, it speaks to the continual entangling of sports and business. What's next? Ads on bases? Oh, wait... [Puck Daddy, via Deaspin]

Marcus Jordan Picks Central Florida

Just weeks removed from leading Whitney Young's basketball team to the State 4A title, Marcus Jordan has chosen where he'll play his college ball. Jordan, the son of Bulls superstar and Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, announced that he will play for the University of Central Florida Knights next year.

Michael Jordan Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame

If ever there was a candidate for first ballot selection to a Hall of Fame, Michael Jordan defined it. As the most dominant player of a generation and perhaps the best to ever play the sport of basketball, it's no surprise that the former Bulls shooting guard will join the 2009 class for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame -- his first year eligible.

Want 'em or hate 'em, the push for the Chicago 2016 Olympics is going to be a big story around here over the next eight months, and especially the next several days as the IOC tours the city. Now comes this three-minute spot promoting Chicago as the host city and the crew at Chicago 2016 finally pulled out the big gun: Michael Jordan. The video is, dare we say, pretty stellar and well put together and only makes us wonder how things would be different if Mayor Daley wasn't leading this charge. [via The Windy Citizen]

Marcus Jordan: Like Father, Like Son

While older brother Jeffrey's Illini team was bounced from the NCAA Tournament in the first round, Michael Jordan's younger son, Marcus, helped his basketball team win a title this weekend. Jordan led Whitney Young past Waukegan 69-66 to win the Illinois 4A state basketball title on Saturday.

Bulls to Honor "Red" Kerr

We'd think that after a seven-game road trip, the Bulls couldn't wait to see their home whites when they return to the United Center tonight to host the Detroit Pistons. Instead, they'll sport their road reds one more time. That's because tonight, the Bulls are honoring Johnny "Red" Kerr for his 35 years of service with the Bulls.

Before there was Space Jam, there was this University of North Carolina infomercial featuring future Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan telling us all to stay healthy. Love the over-the-shoulder shot. [NESW, via Deadspin]

Sure, we had some good NBA games to watch on Christmas Day - Lakers v Celtics kept us entertained - but we dug into the vault for one of his Royal Airness' finest holiday performances: 42 points in this 1992 Christmas Day game against the rival New York Knicks.

Are you a fan of the shoes Michael Jordan made famous? If so, you might want to join the hundreds (thousands?) of fans of MJ and his eponymous shoes who will converge at his statue outside the United Center at noon this Saturday to shoot the final scene of the documentary "Jordan Heads." Billed as "the most anticipated sneaker documentary ever," Saturday's shoot caps four years of production on the film.

Spike Lee announced yesterday at Cannes that he's making a feature documentary about Michael Jordan, financed by the NBA, and tentatively scheduled for release this time next year. [Variety]

Those of us who grew up in Chicago are used to watching Michael Jordan dominate on the court. Yesterday, MJ dominated in court as the Illinois Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal in a case brought by Karla Knafel against the basketball superstar.

You know what we need today? Yeah you do. Some things that are awesome.

Sneakerfiles reports that the Levi's 501 premium selvedge denim have an elephant print lining the inside and the signature Air Jordan symbol is embroidered on one of the pockets along with six gold rings that symbolize each of the championship rings MJ won during his BBall years. The jeans, sneakers and shirt come in a red collector box decorated with graphics from each brand.

Last week we were channel surfing and came across "The Harlem Globetrotters: A New Generation" on Channel 50. We watched it for a little bit and were caught up in both the athleticism of the new Globetrotters and the timeless entertainment of their gags. It reminded us of the days when ABC's "Wide World of Sports" would showcase the team seemingly every other month.

During Chicagoist's middle and high school years, there was nothing cooler than owning the latest pair of Air Jordans ... or so we thought. But we had a number of pairs of Jordans over the years and it likely didn't have much impact on which table we got to eat lunch at. Maybe because everybody else had them, too?

Should Chicagoist be worried that the Bulls have opened their season 0-4 after dropping Tuesday night's game to the L.A. Clippers 97-91? Having watched three of their first four in their entirety, we can certainly say that the Bulls look nothing like a team who we'd predict to win 55 games and finish atop the Eastern Conference. Not only have they yet to enter the win column, but they're not even losing to elite teams....

This week, the Cubs announced plans to build a statue of Ernie Banks outside Wrigley Field, honoring Mr. Cub himself. The new statue will be in place before the 2008 season. While discussions about erecting a statue honoring perhaps the greatest Cubs player ever had been going on for a while, Jess Jackson recently got the ball rolling with a public petition, appearances on the Mike North morning show, and a publicized meetings with Tribune...

Nobody ever questioned the determination of Michael Jordan. The guy who didn't make his high school basketball team worked hard came back to win a spot the next year... then went on to a standout college career, won six titles with the Bulls and was named athlete of the century by ESPN.
