It was around 8 p.m. Labor Day when we heard the familiar jingle ringing down the street. And if you grew up hearing the Mister Softee song, you know it's unmistakable. 'Course, being 40 we just couldn't run out of the house barefoot and shirtless trying to catch up to the truck with five dollars we took from Mom's purse before asking. We had to don shoes and leash the dog. Emmy's 10 and doesn't run anywhere anymore. We were thinking this was going to be a futile endeavor.

Although the weather has not been particularly cooperative, 'tis the season for the Good Humor man, Mister Softee (celebrating his golden anniversary this year), root beer floats, waffle cones, frozen bananas, and sticky kids hopped up on sugar. Chicagoist is old, and we tire easily, so we leave chasing ice cream trucks to those who don't know any better. We head for the ice cream shop instead. In this installment of "South Side Cheap Eats", we've found four ice cream shops that are well worth the trip out south. If you come down by bike, all those calories won't go to your hips, either.

We have two weeks before summer officially begins and- if this recent run of hot, muggy weather is any indication- we’re in for one uncomfortable season. The Mister Softee trucks have been doing great business this week on our block, but Chicagoist is sometimes a bit too self-conscious to run after the dulcet chimes of the ice cream man with his good lemonade, Dixie Cups, all flavors and Push-ups, too. Instead, we head west down Archer Avenue to Lindy’s Chili/Gertie’s Ice Cream.
