Illinois Not Immune to Highway Killings

Probably not the wisest thing to post this so soon after a running diversion featuring a creepy clown, but this is probably the most left-field story we've seen all day. more ›

Four, Including Teen, Killed Over Weekend

Four, Including Teen, Killed Over Weekend

After a lull of several days that saw zero murders, four people, including a 15-year-old boy and a pregnant woman, were killed over the weekend. The first killing happened early Saturday morning when 20-year-old Ludjana Dido of Avondale, who was pregnant with her first child and who had recently graduated from Lydia Urban Academy, was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Dido was with a group of friends that allegedly became involved in an argument with another group. As Dido was getting into a car, another car struck her and drove off. Police have charged 18-year-old Roberto Garcia with first-degree murder in Dido's death. Also early Saturday morning, a man was found dead from a gunshot wound in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. Police currently have not arrested any suspects. more ›

Crawford Convicted

Crawford Convicted

Andre Crawford, the man accused of raping and murdering 11 women in the Englewood neighborhood during the 1990s, was found guilty of all 11 murders plus nine rape charges and an attempted murder charge of a 12th woman. Rape charges weren't brought against Crawford in conjunction with three of the women because they fell outside the statue of limitations. Crawford had confessed on video to police in the killings and described how he offered the women drugs in exchange for sex. The jury was due to return today to begin deliberating on whether or not to sentence Crawford to death, the third such case in Illinois in as many months; James Degorski received life in prison over the death penalty in October for his role in the Brown's Chicken murders and Brian Dugan received the death penalty in November for the murder of Jeanine Nicarico. City's Violence Draws International Attention

The Chicago 2016 folks won't be happy about this. The U.K.'s Guardian has picked up on the number of school-aged children killed in Chicago over the past year in a story titled, "Chicago's Murdered Children." There's even a video to accompany the story. [via] more ›

500

Well, this wasn't the news we wanted to see going into Christmas. For the first time in five years, Chicago has eclipsed 500 murders, according to Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond. No other details are known other than that the homicide occurred last night. While these numbers are still a far cry from the bloody 90's (when homicides topped 900 a year from 1991 through 1994), it's still an uptick from last year's 443 murders and doesn't do beleaguered Chicago Police honcho Jody Weis any good. more ›
