See This: Theo Ubique's Evita
Theo Ubique’s Evita opened at the No Exit Café on Monday night, and all we can say is: GO. Evita tells the story of the actress turned beloved political figure Eva Peron through the eyes of radical Che Guevara. The show began as a concept album in 1976 and opened in London in 1978. It won seven Tony Awards when it premiered on Broadway, and Madonna and Antonio Banderas immortalized the show with the 1996 film. This production does not have the huge budget or big-name stars of these predecessors, but given the minimal space in the venue, the fact that the company can successfully present a musical by a composer noted for his over-the-top shows - think of the chandelier crashing to the stage in Phantom of the Opera -is further testament to this production’s great success.
Obama STILL On Our Mind
America may have called him President first, but England beat us to making him into a musical. That’s right folks, the Obama musical, Obama On My Mind, starts performances tonight in London at the Hens and Chickens Theatre. What will they think of next?
Xanadu Billboard Creates Stir, Gets Yanked
Vanity Fair really liked the new music Xanadu, currently showing at Drury Lane Theatre Water Tower Place. A new billboard in East Lakeview for the musical had a quote from VF proclaiming the musical was, "like taking ecstasy." Problem is, that billboard was at Melrose and Broadway, right across the street from Nettelhorst Elementary School. And it didn't take long for complaints to start rolling in.
'Avenue Q' Hits Chicago's Streets
“Avenue Q,” the Tony-award winning Broadway sensation has finally made its way to Chicago after beginning a national tour last summer. The musical follows the lives of a group of recent college graduates while struggling to make ends meet as young urbanites. “Avenue Q” is unlike other musicals, though, in that it stars a cast of puppets who sing outrageously funny, candid, and un-P.C. songs about their life: “It’s OK If You’re Gay,” “The Internet is for Porn,” and “Everyone’s a Little Racist.”
