Let’s start with the good news:
Supreme Cinematic Putrescence
Chicago Public Radio's Sound Opinions continues its occasional film series with a screening of the "rock opera" Jesus Christ Superstar at the Music Box on December 3. Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot will be on hand to introduce the movie. Advance tickets are $9.
Lately In Strange And / Or Unsettling Theatrical Choices
It seems like every other day we're reading about yet another theatrical project that makes us wonder if the success of Glee has caused some kind of collective brain short-circuiting. [Ed. note: I can't wait for Glee to die. How has no one else noticed it's just a cross between American Pie and the 4th season of Ally McBeal?!] Read for yourself.
New Movie Musicals Range From Standards To WTF
After reading that Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast in a remake of the musical Damn Yankees, we were cautiously optimistic. Carrey as the Devil? Seems about right. Gyllenhaal as an ordinary guy who sells his soul to play professional baseball? Sure. However, a few important pieces are missing: director, script, and leading lady Lola, a seductress in the Devil’s employ, who must be able to sing and dance. There’s a lot of room for error here. Musicals get a bad rap in general, so a poorly made film is like a salt-bath for a wounded art form.
Holiday Week Afternoon Diversion
Before we call it a day and head off to barbecues, parades and attempts to blow up our neighbor's lawn, lets take a few minutes to remember the visionaries who wrote both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Spring, Rent Coming to Town
is amazing. Like most great rock operas, Awakening has 19th century German source material and is mostly about screwing, but is a little about dying and growing up, too. Take a listen to "The Bitch of Living", which is one of our faves from the show.
