What is it about the Baltimore Orioles that stymies the Sox? With the Twins stuck in a three-game losing streak, it's the perfect chance for the Sox to close some ground, but they ran into the buzzsaw that is the Baltimore Orioles once again, losing 4-2 last night at The Cell. The loss drops the Sox to 2-4 this month against the worst team in the American League. Down 3-0, Gordon Beckham provided a spark with a solo homer in the sixth and Carlos Quentin ripped an RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth, but the Sox couldn't follow through on the rally. Mark Buehrle gave up all four runs, falling to 12-10 on the year as he went seven innings while the Sox deal with a depleted bullpen; J.J. Putz and Matt Thornton were both placed on the DL yesterday. The Sox get one more crack at the Orioles before the Yankees come to town so they hope to make the most of it with Edwin Jackson taking the hill (7:10 p.m., CSN). more ›

Morning Box Score: Cubs Rout Nats

Morning Box Score: Cubs Rout Nats

Oh, sure. you start winning, Cubs. The moment Lou is out the door and you put together one of your better offensive efforts this month and win for only the sixth time in August, routing the Washington Nationals 9-1. Blake DeWitt opened the scoring in the third with a solo homer that was followed by a two-run single by Tyler Colvin and later a two-run triple by Alfonso Soriano as the Cubs scored five times in the inning. The Cubs pieced together a few more runs, including an RBI from pitcher Casey Coleman, helping his own cause. Coleman only gave up one run on three hits over 6.1 innings to notch his first major league win; youngsters Andrew Cashner and Thomas Diamond pitched perfect relief to help secure the win in the debut of interim manager Mike Quade. Said Quade afterward, "It was a stress-free night, and it was fun to watch." Yeah, don't get used to that, you're only playing the Nationals right now. The Reds, Mets, and Cardinals still loom. But first, game two of the series against the Nats is tonight with Zambrano taking the hill (6:05 p.m., WGN). more ›

And Then There Were None.

Chicago's own Lamar Fenner fought Michigan's Jordan Shimmell last night at the national Golden Gloves finals, and though he tried his damnedest, lost a 3-2 decision to the heavyweight. Shimmell, a four-time Michigan state champ and national Golden Gloves veteran, told Michigan Live that he thought the third round - when Fenner seemed to tire - was what probably won the split decision for him. more ›

The Only Dry Place in Wrigleyville

The Only Dry Place in Wrigleyville

In light of the death of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock, who was driving drunk at the time of his fatal accident, many baseball teams have re-addressed their alcohol policies for players. The Cards were the first team to ban alcohol from their clubhouse in the wake of this tragedy, with the Nationals following suit. The Yankees, who already banned alcohol in the home locker room, have now banned it in the visitors' locker... more ›

Circle of Life

Circle of Life

Chicagoist can't get that damn story out of our head now, but "Circle of Life" was the first thing that we thought when we heard that former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is about to sign a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers in hopes of returning to "the show." more ›

Cubs Sign Soriano

Cubs Sign Soriano

For a company in financial trouble, the Cubs' parent company sure has been quick to open up the wallet this off season. Following last week's re-signing of Aramis Ramirez to a rich new deal, the Cubs made the biggest splash of baseball's free agency period by signing Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year, $136 million deal on Monday. Soriano batted .277 with 46 home runs, 95 RBIs, 41 doubles and 41 stolen bases -- becoming the... more ›

Who'll Be the Cubs' Next Manager?

With all the potential candidates now known, the Cubs' list to fill Dusty Baker's vacancy seems to be: Lou Piniella, Joe Girardi, Bob Brenley and maybe even Buck Showalter -- the last of the managerial casualties. Braves third base coach Fredi Gonzalez had been on early wish lists, but the Florida Marlins snatched him up within hours of dumping Girardi. more ›

Deal or No Deal?

Deal or No Deal?

Baseball’s non-waiver trading deadline passed today at 3:00pm (CDT). The Cubs and Sox were both rumored to be players in possible deals, with the Cubs likely sellers of players and the Sox looking to add those missing pieces to help them right their ship and hopefully make a return trip to the World Series. Since the Cubs fell out of the running, there had been rumors that Greg Maddux and Todd Walker would get shipped... more ›

So Long Sosa?

So Long Sosa?

Throughout Florida and Arizona, players begin reporting to Spring Training to begin preparation for the 2006 season. However, it's looking like one play who won't be reporting to any camp is former Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa, who turned down an offer from the Washington Nationals. The only Major League offer Sosa received, the Nats deal only offered a non-guaranteed 1-year, $500,000 deal. Having already turned down offers from teams in Japan and overtures from the Dominican team to play in the upcoming World Baseball Championships, Sosa's agent said, "... I can say, with reasonable certainty, that we've seen Sammy in a baseball uniform for the last time." more ›
