Essential Cinema: Diary of a Mad Housewife

Her husband Jonathan is a partner in a successful law firm. They live with their two young daughters in a luxurious highrise just off the park. So why is Tina so lifeless and exhausted? Well, for starters, her husband (Richard Benjamin, exquisitely obnoxious) is an egocentric nag who only seems interested in climbing the next rung on the social ladder. And her children are goggle-eyed aliens who constantly whine, when they're not being openly hostile towards her. At a party, Tina happens to meet George, a celebrity writer with a streak of narcissism a mile wide. He propositions her. Eventually, she gives in. And that's when the story really takes off.

The Sun-Times ran an article today asking why Wilco isn't opening up the Chicago date of Neil Young's tour. Do they hate us? Are they annoyed we keep bringing that whole Bennett thing back up? Is Tweedy just a cranky-pants?

So you think Chicagoist is sometimes too critical of the way Mayor Daley runs the city? Wait until the Reverend Al Sharpton gets settled in his new digs. The boisterous Gotham-based minister, with the pompadour that's fading away like a Neil Young lyric, is opening a Chicago chapter of his National Action Network this week, in part to add pressure to His Elective Majesty and Cook County State's Attorney Dick Devine to react faster to...

We were talking to a friend yesterday and they began to bemoan the fact that there were no “classic” rock bands anymore. We didn’t totally agree, since we believe there are MANY bands that “rock” out there, but we understood what they were getting at: It’s hard to find a band in the classic rock vein that plays with heart and familiarity while avoiding cliché.

Chicagoist has gotten out of bed on the jaded and cynical side this morning, so bear with us. We were perusing the internets, as we do every morning, and came across this article in the Sun Times. And we thought to ourselves – what a kick ass job! How does one get to become a music supervisor on a hit show like The O.C.? Daydreams previously fantasized here at Chicagoist. As we read about Ms....

The first swing came flying from the Tribune - only 28% of Farm Aid's revenue last year made it to farm families. Ouch! That stings! The Trib then continued the jabs with questions of why Farm Aid has nearly $19,000 in Bank of America stock when banks are the ones responsible for foreclosing on family farms - the main reason that Farm Aid began twenty years ago. The Trib also added that in Farm...

20 years after the first Farm Aid concert occurred in Champaign, Illinois the concert is coming back to our fair state on September 18th at the Tweeter Center. So far the usual Farm Aid players are confirmed: Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellancamp, and Dave Matthews. Wilco has also been slated. Tickets for the fundraising concert go on sale July 30th at 10 a.m. A contest from Organic Valley for free tickets is going on through July 31st.

The second album from both Chicago rock quintet Riviera and its label Glorious Noise Records gets the big-time release party treatment this Saturday. We’ve been grooving on a preview copy of At The End Of The American Century... for the last couple weeks and it should come at little surprise to those who’ve been following the story that it's a pastiche of the various cultural touchstones that get hashed out on the GLONO bulletin boards every day.
