DUI Charges Filed In New Trier Hit-And-Run

Erin Hughes, the 18-year-old New Trier student already charged in a May 14 hit-and-run that severely injured a classmate, has now had two new misdemeanor DUI charges added to her tally after tests showed she still had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash. She had previously admitted to police she had smoked marijuana the night before the crash, which injured 16-year-old Sarah Goone. Prosecutors also amended a previous charge, meaning the maximum sentence Hughes faces is three years in prison. Prosecutor Diann Sheridan said, “It’s the appropriate charge based on the facts." Hughes is currently free after an anonymous donor paid the necessary $50,000 bond on Hughes' $500,000 bail. more ›

Anonymous Donor Bails Out New Trier Student

Anonymous Donor Bails Out New Trier Student

Erin Hughes, the New Trier student charged in a recent hit-and-run, had her bond paid by an anonymous donor. Hughes had been jailed because her family couldn't afford to pay the required 10 percent of her $500,000 bond but an anonymous donor has provided the necessary $50,000 to get Hughes released. Hughes will again see daylight as soon as her parents can surrender her passport, a requirement set for her release. She'll be monitored by electronic bracelet. more ›

One last, self-indulgent note before we bow out for the day. Chicagoist went live on May 10, 2004 featuring a design you can see above (via the Wayback Machine). Since then, we've had ups and downs but it's been one hell of a ride. Five years is an eternity in internet time, so thanks to Jen, Jake and all our benefactors in NYC, thanks to Rachelle and Margaret for getting the ball rolling here, thanks to every single writer who has posted - past and present - for your hard work, and last but most importantly, thanks to all of you readers who keep coming back every day. We hope to see you tomorrow night at our celebration, and we'll see you back here next week as we start the next five years. - M.G. more ›

A New Trier high school student got access to the school's computer system, apparently to check his class rank. He didn't steal any personal info, and nothing was deleted or changed; he just accessed "student directory information for all students, semester grades for current students and the last three graduating classes, and ACT test scores for the class of 2008." Police are investigating. [S-T] more ›
