We're always skeptical of the "farewell tour" phenomenon, but Ministry seems to mean it. On the heels of their surprisingly good swan-song The Last Sucker, the band has announced the final North American tour dates of its loooong career.
Northwestern is among forty North American colleges and universities in the running for PETA's most vegetarian-friendly campus, to be awarded next month (if you're so inclined, you may vote for Northwestern or any of the other nominees here). The nominees were compiled by students throughout the US and Canada and tallied by PETA2, the animal-rights organizations youth activism arm.

Now that summer is doing the quick fade, certain foods and beverages that we avoided during the warm months are creeping back into our diet. They tend to taste better during cooler weather. One of those beverages is a good stout. We mean a good stout, with the viscosity of motor oil and brewed with malt so heavily roasted you'd think they burned the brewery down making the beer. We bought a couple bottles of...
No, that headline is not redundant. One of our favorite movie theaters, the Music Box opened in 1929. By the 70’s however it had added porn to its schedule in order to stay afloat. It actually closed in 1977 but was reopened in 1983 after renovations. It’s been showing the best in foreign, revival and indie film ever since. Love that organ. In 2003 the theater was sold to the building’s owner, William Schopf....
A good drink can improve the quality level of a meal. It can make a mediocre dinner tolerable, or raise the bar on a perfectly cooked entree. The best chefs, along with their sommeliers, wine stewards, and spirits experts, plan a meal and its pairings with meticulous detail. Although beer and food have complemented each other for centuries, restaurants in the States are placing an increased emphasis on offering beer pairings for those who don't...
What’s impossible to write about last night’s LCD Soundsystem show at the Metro is just how many influences there are in James Murphy’s songs, let alone an entire night’s setlist. The lyrics from “Losing My Edge” can give us a little insight into just which sounds may be hiding in the mix, even if Murphy’s only being sarcastic. Disco. Industrial. New Wave. Funk. Glam. Punk.
Having a baby at home just isn't as easy as it used to be; forget the days of someone coming to your home, the boiling of water and biting on a leather strap. These days there are serious legal consequences for taking birth into your own hands. Well, not really your hands, more like the hands of a midwife.
Some of us are still recovering from last week's Four Questions, but our readers have an insatiable thirst for answers. One recently posed an interesting question to us concerning Chicago's Olympic bid and the city's flag. As all Chicagoans no doubt know, the city's flag includes three white bars, two blue bars and four six-sided stars. The three white bars signify the North, West and South sides of the city, while the blue bars...
DuSable Park should have its own place in history as a figure of speech. Example: “Sure, I’ll call you back, when DuSable Park is finished”. DuSable was originally discussed in 1988. Wrigley got lights, the Bears lost to the 49ers in the NFC Championship, Daley was a year away from being mayor, and DuSable Park was only going to cost $1.2 million. Today, estimates put the completion of DuSable park at around $12 million,...
It was just announced Sonic Youth will headline the Pitchfork Music Festival's opening night, July 13, with a performance of Daydream Nation in its entirety. Holy shit, is that awesome or what?
A few days ago, the New York Times scooped the local dailies with a piece about Rod Blagojevich's plan to cash in his chips, so to speak, with plans to privatize the Illinois Lottery. If you are feeling particularly bureaucratic today, you can read the state's Request for Concessionaire Qualifications here (PDF). John Filan, the state's Chief Operating Officer cites the government's inability to efficiently manage what he claims is essentially a retail operation. “Gaming...
It was less than two years ago that the Lincoln Park Zoo went elephant-free after the deaths of several of its elephants. Detroit Zoo no longer has an elephant exhibit either. Seems it might be growing more difficult to visit elephants in the Midwest.
The Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced this afternoon that the 2007 Gold Cup Semi-Finals and Finals will be played at Soldier Field here in Chicago. The Gold Cup is a tournament of national soccer teams within the North American, Central American, and Caribbean regions. There will be twelve teams competing in the tournament. Three are automatic bids that go to former winners: Canada (2000), Mexico (1993, 1996, 1998 &...
If you are anything like Chicagoist, you have a frightening dependency issue with cheese. We love the damn thing. Don’t even make us choose between groceries for a week and four really great wedges of cheese. The tricky part, however, is finding the good stuff that’s out there. Upscale grocers like Whole Foods, Fox & Obel and the like tend to carry a pretty decent selection, overpriced as it may be. But if you...
Today is the first day of October and that means it is the start of World Vegetarian Day. According to Wikipedia, the day was established in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society. We plan on taking the opportunity to try out one of the many vegetarian friendly restaurants we haven't been to today, and you should to. Today is the final day of The 36th Annual Pilsen East Artists' Open House . The open...
The Chicago Fire and their fans will pay homage to the Chicago Sting this Sunday in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Sting's first NASL Soccer Bowl Championship in 1981. During that season, fans came out to Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park not to see the Cubs or Sox, as there was a baseball strike underway, but to see the Chicago Sting. The Chicago Sting defeated the New York Cosmos 1-0 in front of a crowd of 36,000 in Toronto to earn the title.
Direct from the 16th International AIDS Conference, the Keiskamma Altarpiece, sharing a message of suffering and triumph, has arrived in Chicago. Over 120 South African women and men from a region particularly stricken by poverty and AIDS collaborated on this massive, multi-paneled work of embroidery, beads, wire sculpture, and photographs.
Racial segregation (either voluntary or systemic) has long been a problem in Chicago housing. Today a federal study throws light on the difficulties that Chicago’s disabled population experiences when pursuing rental properties.
Why do you suppose the Chicago Palestine Film Festival isn’t listed on the main page of The Gene’s website? Or in the navigation bar on their calendar page? It only appears there when you click on one of the films featured in the fest. We contacted The Gene offices and the genetleman there said he had "no idea" why it wasn't there. When we pressed further he said they probably just ran out of room--a reasonable answer. Yet there's space enough on the main page to promote the European Union Film Festival which wrapped up three weeks ago and room in the navbar for the Michael Mann tribute which has been over for two weeks.
It is sinful, and it is irresponsible, and someday we will look back on this period of our history and ask, 'Why were we so obsessed with this issue?' We're using this to stir up people who have more to worry about, who are living with widespread AIDS and famine and poverty. With those words, Chicago's Episcopal bishop, William Persell, jumped into the Anglican divide over ordination of gays in the church. Anglican leaders were...
Maybe were just squeamish, but the idea of watching a gorilla give birth is totally horrifying to us. Keeping our gorilla-cooch count at 0, while not explicitly a life goal, isnt something were that eager to change. Looks like we wouldnt have had too much fun at the Brookfield Zoo on Wednesday, where 9-year-old Koola gave birth in front of about 100 eager on-lookers. Koolas caretakers wanted to keep her routine as normal as possible to avoid adding extra stress to the birth, which is why they kept the gorilla area open to the public. Still, thanks but no thanks.
