The Lake County Sheriff says the crash that killed 14 horses was "completely avoidable and inexcusable." The driver, James E. Anderson, 34 of North Dakota, was hauling 59 Belgian draft horses in a double-decker semi truck. He's been charged with disobeying a traffic control device and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and he may face additional charges. Chicagoist is all about personal accountability when it comes to children. We've no love lost for deadbeat dads (or moms, let's be fair) as much as the next guy. That's what child services are for, to put the thumbscrews to those that deserve it. Except, in Chicagoan Edward Jackson's case, he didn't deserve it ... and got screwed anyway.

Yesterday we had an article on so-called "gifties" who lost what was undoubtedly a rigged t-shirt contest in 8th grade. Their response was an oh-so-clever statement on the injustice of losing a t-shirt contest, they made t-shirts. We may have found the answer to what happened to this group of "gifties" over the next four years. The Quality Counts 2007 study by Education Week indicates the weakness in our education system is, in large part, due to a lack of connection from one level of grade school to the next. We aren't quite sure why a study is needed to identify this, it is pretty common knowledge that every kid everywhere is scared shitless when they enter the 6th and 9th grades. But, the study shows us a lot of valuable data about our own state, which I must say is ranked a not so shabby 12th.

Just noticed the Trib has a breaking news story - In the fall of next year, all Marshall Field's stores will convert to Macy's. This includes all 62 locations in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Indiana, Ohio and SD. So.. Marshall Fields on State St. becomes Macy's on State.
