Off-Duty Officer Killed Early This Morning

Just two months after off-duty police officer Thomas Wortham, IV was killed in a robbery attempt - and just days after officer Thor Soderberg was laid to rest - another Chicago Police officer has been killed. The 63-year-old officer, who had been on an overnight shift guarding Mayor Daley's home, according to the Tribune, was off-duty, shot after returning home to the 7400 block of South Evans Avenue in what appears to be an attempted vehicle robbery. Murder Charges Filed In Cop's Death

The man accused of shooting and killing Chicago Police officer Thor Soderberg was formally charged in the officer's death last night. Bryant Brewer, 24, was charged with one count of murder for the death of Officer Soderberg as well as one count of attempted murder and one count of armed robbery for his attack on a nearby construction worker moments after he shot Soderberg. Detective Allen Szudarski told reporters yesterday that Brewer admitted to the crimes. Police Officer Killed Outside Station With Own Gun

Chicago Police Officer Thor Soderberg, 43, was shot and killed yesterday afternoon as he was leaving a police building in the Englewood neighborhood. Officer Soderbergh was walking through the parking lot of the building, at 61st St. and S. Racine, at 3:45 p.m. yesterday when a man, a convicted felon, became "became involved in a struggle," according to a police spokesman, and in the ensuing scuffle, the man got control of Soderberg's gun and shot the officer in the head. The man fled the scene and then robbed a civilian nearby where police caught up to him, shooting and wounding him. He was reported in critical but stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he is in police custody. more ›

Two More Suspects In Death Of Officer In Custody

As almost two hundred people gathered to mourn the death of Chicago Police officer Thomas Wortham IV, police announced two more suspects in his shooting death are now in custody. One suspect turned himself in to police yesterday afternoon while another was apprehended last night during a traffic stop. Police say the men were part of a group of four, originally reported as three, that tried to rob Wortham of his motorcycle on Wednesday night as he was leaving his parents' Chatham house. During the incident, Wortham's father came to his aid and gunfire was exchanged; one suspect was killed while another was critically wounded, though police are still sorting exactly who shot who. more ›

Injured Police Officer Dies

A sad end to a story from earlier today: the Chicago Police officer who was shot responding to a call this morning has died as a result of his injuries. According to Police Supt. Jody Weis, Alejandro "Alex" Valadez, 27, died about 2:40 p.m. this afternoon. He had been with the department for about three years. The Sun-Times and Chicago Breaking News have more details. more ›
